The only thing we have similar is XP SP3.
I noticed a lot of XP in this thread. Anyone think there's some causation? Or is it just people running XP tend to have older computers?

I'm currently using this machine: ASUS G51J: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) Intel Core i7-720QM (1.6GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 6MB Cache) up to 2.93Hz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 1GB GDDR3 memory 4GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM (2GB x 2) Two 320GB Seagate 7200RPM Hard Drives Additional info: Nvidia 258.96 drivers GPU Temp: around 85 (normal for Asus) Core Temps: Low 61 High 80 I bought it 3 months ago for 1500 Euro, so I can play sc2 on high AND guess what.. I can't play it even on medium. Ever since the BETA patch 7 my sc2 performance is getting worse.. unplayable for competitive games I would say (FPS around 70 on high and medium but every minute or so it drops down to 15-25 FPS AND this is VERY annoying). Even after I capped the FPS in variables.txt to 60 it still constantly drops to 15-25! I'm going crazy. Please give some feedback, what's wrong with this game/this machine? So in time I learned that it was my video card overheating. I know you said your temps are good, but take the side of your case off, and put a small floor fan next to it just blowing inside your case. When I did this all of the frame rate drops stopped happening, and I knew after that that I needed a new video card. I'm not kidding about this by the way, so don't make fun of my solution please ![]() edit: On the other hand, I'm noticing a lot more people having this problem that just the OP in this thread...so I'm reluctant to think that all of you are having overheating problems, oh well I tried to help.

My CPU is used for about 50% when the drop occurs, and during the drop it doesn't spike or anything, but remains around 50%. Same for memory: about 80% used but it never goes to 100% during the slowdowns. Very strange issue. The temperature never goes above about 70°, so that's totally acceptable. I'm sure that's not the issue either.

I noticed my GPU usage dropped to 0% when the slowdown occurred. Full description of the problem as I experience it: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/248415154#1 I think determining what would cause the GPU to not even be used (as opposed to being stressed and unable to supply the necessary resources) is key to solving this problem. I encourage you to get some monitor for your video card either from ATI/Nvidia or the mfg (i.e. EVGA, etc) and check to see if you notice the same thing, otherwise we could be talking about different problems.

Yeah, I also thought it might be sound related at first, but I have a very good Audiophile card (M Audio Delta). I also tried to use the built in sound card on the motherboard but there was no difference. Disabling sound altogether did nothing either. All research I've done so far points to the older model AMD CPUs. The guy with the intel laptop (or the other guy with intel machines) didn't seem to understand what we were talking about. IT'S NOT JUST FPS DROPS OR UNSTABILITY. The game FREEZES for 5-15 seconds or so (the only real difference from a lockup is that you can move the mouse). Not 1 fps, not 10. zero. What you're talking about is something else. When it doesn't freeze I can run constantly on 60 fps without any drops or unstability. I think this is what we with the AMD San Diego chipset experience. OP might describe a different problem, I'm not too sure. Anyway I think it's just a quite big bug they haven't cared about or fixed since the beginning of the beta.

I also checked the heat during this "attack" and it remains constant at about 100°C (this is also the idle temperature - so it's not a overheat issue). Looks like we're closing in on the issue... Now it's time to figure out how to fix it.

It reverts back to about 30% when the slowdown stops. This is definitely the problem. It seems that, for some reason, SC2 stops sending commands to the GPU. Uh...in your case it might be. A GPU idling at 100C is broken. Idle temps should be half that or even less.

But I did try multiple versions of drivers, (down to 197.xx) and they all have the same issue. Older drivers actually have it worse. I can of course try to revert to even older drivers, but I doubt that will do any good...
