I have the same CPU as OP and you and me should both upgrade to keep a steady FPS.
i dunno lol

No, vsync or any graphic options does nothing, as most of us suspected it's CPU related. I don't know whether to buy a new motherboard or to wait for a patch (but I doubt they'll fix it anytime soon), it's pretty frustrating playing online with all these fps freezes. You micro some reapers and FREEZE... SPEED UP BAM ALL DEAD.

Here's how you will fix it (ATI Users)

Right Click -> Catalyst Control Center -> Your Card Name -> 3D Settings -> Standard Setting -> Optimal Performance.

I've had this problem in StarCraft 2 and WarCraft 3, and it's all fixed, no more FPS drops etc.
Have fun gaming !

I also have had this problem since day one of the beta, and for some reason blizzard wont even respond to our posts anymore. Its insanely annoying, it makes micro impossible. I play alot of toss and i notice that every time i build my first sentry it freezes and then fast forwards. It seems like everytime a certain sound is played for the first time this happens. At first I thought it was for sure because of my single core because alot of the new games have been having problems with single cores, but after reading alot of posts it looks like its not just limited to single core.

AMD 3500
8800gt
2 gigs of ram

Ive tried every possible solution to no avail. It really pisses me off that I paid 60 bux for this game and blizzard just seems to be ignoring it. I really hope they fix this soon.

This doesn't seem to work.

I have also been getting random drops in fps ingame, and it was after turning down my shaders and shadow ? I have no idea but I didn't experience this during beta.

6000+
GTX 280 SC
4gb Corsair XMS2

It's gotta be my CPU for me, but for others not so sure. my VGA used to be able to carry the load on all games, SC2 is the first to show how big my bottleneck really is.

I have the exact same specs as the OP and I noticed that disabling Cool'nquiet in the bios seems to help a little bit. But what I find curious is that no matter what graphics settings I have on starcraft 2 (low-ultra) the framerate never deviates from 30-40 fps which is very... odd....

That is the by-the-book definition of a CPU-limited system.

I bought a completely new PC to play SC2, and I have the same issue (even on lower graphics settings - medium and low), so it's definitely not related to slow computer components. So please, I would appreciate if anyone would stop saying "upgrade your CPU or something". My setup is:

Intel i5 750 quadcore
nVidia 9800 GX2
4GB RAM
Windows 7

To be honest I don't see any trend in the rigs people are posting for this issue. Some have ATI cards, others nVidia, some are Intel and others are AMD. It's really annoying though, as I lose a lot of ladder games due to this sudden drop in FPS.

This should be optimized by Blizzard! I gave 1500 euros for a new Laptop (G51J) and still cant play at all High. To be honest the game is not that demanding but I guess they are waiting for us to buy new PCs and then optimize it which obv sucks

Eh you would be the first with a modern CPU in this thread. Everyone else has had a Northwood (2002-2004) or A64 (2003-2005 era). All of my friends are on Conroes or better (Lynnfields) - none of them have reported this issue.

You do have a dual-GPU system, which makes it vulnerable to bad SLI profiles. That is a reason I stick to monolithic GPUs. I saw my friend deal with that too many times when he has his 9800GX2 2 years ago (and 295 more recently). He's on a 480 to avoid that nonsense now.

I disabled SLI, but it doesn't make a difference. Even the FPS stays more or less the same, and the same issue still occurs.

Oh and to be complete: this happens anywhere in the game, no matter what is going on. I've had sudden FPS drops while I was chatting on the bnet interface screen. Or in the Hyperion cantina while I was checking out mercenaries. It seems totally random, and unrelated to what is going on. Clearly a bug or incompatibility issue, and not a performance issue.

Just my 2 cents. I play on a laptop, Core2Duo T5550 (1,83GHz), 2GB Ram and Nvidia 8400M GS. Its not the best setup, but sc2 recognized it to play on medium. Which i CAN'T do because of these fps drops. I put everything on LOW, and the game is now playable. On medium i could play the game NORMALLY, i only had the sudden drops when I selected a new unit (disabling 3D portraits make this better), and when something new occured on the map. Every time a warning poped up on the game or on the map BAM fps drops. It normalized but when i had to move the camera it droped again... If my camara were stationary everything was fine the moment i tried to move it, i got the fps drops, even when nothing was happening.

Only solution for me: Play the game with everything on LOW.

And even with stuff on LOW i tried to enable 3d portraits again and i got small but some fps drops, specially when something poped up on the screen during the mission.

I've never got past 30 fps.... well, my vga sucks.

AMD Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition 2,6GHz
6GB RAM
GeForce 8200 256MB (I believe here is my problem, right?)

zug0, I believe your processor should be at least 2,6GHz

Do any of the people with this problem have a good sound card? If not, the game is probably using default drivers with a small ram cache. When the game tries to play the sound and it's not in the cache, it loads it from the hard drive and stalls the game.

Just a theory, of course.

You know that a core2duo 1,83ghz is MUCH faster than a Pentium IV 2.6GHz right?
It's rated as a 3.37GHz

From the official forum:

Processadores Intel Core 2 perto de 1.8 GHz é uma velocidade aceitável e deverá ser possível jogar com as definições no mínimo. 2.4 GHz é a velocidade recomendada.

I can play on medium, i only can't play when i have to move the camera, even if there is NOTHING happening across the map. Sudden fps drop, if my camera remains stationary the game runs without any kind of problem. Not a processor problem here IMO.

Did you run http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/ or something similar before changing drivers? Leftover drivers can lead to instability and crashing.
