Since the SC2 beta (I formatted my computer just before installing) started I've experienced a peculiar problem, when using full screen mode my game will slow down from the standard 60-70 fps to 1-3 for 5-10 seconds time. It seems to happen at completely random times, I've reviewed the same parts of the game where it slowed down through replays and the fps doesn't necessarily drop at the same exact spot or close to it. I've tried multiple video card drivers and am now using the ones suggested by Blizzard (197.13). None of them have helped with this other than some of the newest drivers causing my game to crash completely resulting in artifacts appearing on the screen. I run the game on the lowest possible graphics.
Things relating to this I've noticed: In campaign mode the fps drop often happens even in windowed mode. In campaign pressing F10 to pause the game will result in the fps going back to normal. Unpause and the fps drops again no matter how long you wait for.
Hardware: Windows XP SP3 Nvidia 9800GT AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 5200+ 4gb RAM Plenty of free space on HDD Please tell me if you need more information/more specific.
Overheating? I've monitored the temperatures while playing and no significant rise can be noticed. It stays at around 60-70 celsius. Doesn't seem to be related to the fps drops. SC2 related? Not necessarily, I've noticed this happening in Quake Live and Urban Terror as well but very rarely compared to SC2. BW/WC3 doesn't happen.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Google nor the Battle.net forums have been of great help so far but knowing TL I am not hopeless yet.
edit: Problem seemingly gone after fucking around with a ton of settings, switching drivers like a mad man and opening my PC case.

I have an identical problem. I was hoping that someone would post a thread like this.
Athlon 64 3500+ 1.93GB of RAM NVIDIA 8800 GS XP SP3
EDIT: I've noticed that the FPS drops often happen when something new appears on screen, like an enemy unit or an alert on the minimap. This makes the problem especially frustrating since the game seems to freeze whenever I engage in battle!

Yeah I had exactly the same problems as you two. I noticed that there are some parts of the maps like the 1st hatch in the whispers of doom Zeratul mission that ALWAYS lag, no matter what. I noticed too that the big talking avatars like Swann when he introduces new units tend to lag like hell. I'd appreciate any help with this aside from lowering my settings :|

When I turned off 3D portraits, it seemed to help, but it didn't solve the problem completely. Judging by how noisy the hard drive is during the freezes, I would imagine that the problem lies with switching textures or models or something from the hard drive to the RAM. Just a hunch.

This happened to me in beta after patch 16 on my old computer. Never found a fix for it. All settings Low and whatever possible off...still happened.
My new computer is significantly better, and I've not had this problem. The main differences are: CPU Intel P4 -> AMD GPU nVidia -> ATi RAM crap -> craptons
I doubt the problem is RAM, as I played patches 6 through 15 with no problems at all. I'm almost certain it's the CPU since changing video drivers did nothing.
[edit] So the problem is on older Intel and AMD CPUs?

No, Puosu has a dual core AMD CPU. It's equivalent to an Intel Core Duo, which falls under the "recommended" category for SC2. So that can't be the issue.

Core Duo is old as hell, and if he had an equivalent AMD dual core, that means it's also old. Core 2 is even old. I wouldn't recommend anything less than AM2+ sockets or Core i3s. I'm trying to collect more info from people for a LP2 page about hardware configs with FPS on whatever settings and any issues that might occur, but nobody has given me anything yet

got more ram and better gpu but got same problem, guess its our cpu

I believe I have the same problem. SC2 recommends Ultra/maxed out settings but then whenever something new appears on screen it lags for a second then everything fast forwards as it catches up. Repeat 100x every game .
It's especially intensive at the start of each mission/game.

I imagine it's a combination of low IPC, low RAM (< 4GB), low VRAM, and well, slow scratch disks. Who knows, if you have all of these, your experience will suffer haha.
However the OP has a relatively modern GPU and 4GB RAM so hmmm. CPU is definitely way old, but doesn't explain the drop to 1fps. Could be an HD on its way out, but I doubt it.

HDD shouldn't cause this, especially since models are loaded into memory for use, and just displaying one wouldn't access the HDD.

Yeah, so I guess something with the NB/RAM? I mean RAM would BSOD if it was bad (and it isn't). Doesn't mention anything on OCing either, but maybe check NB temps? Really only a problem on the early NF4 boards, I dunno.

In my case I'm 99% certain it's all because of my single core cpu.
|
also have the same problem, but thought it was because of my single core like above poster. It IS in fact a bug however, it's been posted on blizzard tech forums in beta so many times but they didn't seem to be able to solve it. I've tried downclocking, lots of settings and driver tweakings but to no effect.
Also I think it only happens on (older) AMD CPU's. Someone confirm or deny please?
*edit* and to me it is unique to SC2, I've never had it happen in any other game.

AMD 3700+ OCed at 2.52GHZ is what i use, would you have a link?
|
what link? the tech support? I've just seen lots of posts on the official forums, but not any Blizzard reply. Oh and I also have an AMD 3700+.

Ah of course not, blues never respond to these types of things besides a "got newest drivers?"
+ Show Spoiler +http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EfLUBAiQMI thats exactly the "lag" I get mouse still moves then units jump forward into time. (around 1:30 area)

Always turn VSYNC off. In BNet, and in the ATI catalyst center. (especially applicable if your FPS seems to drop in halves...i.e. 60->30->15 or similar.)

i just can't seem to find force vsync off in CCC, if i force it off with atitools will this effect CCC?

The old AMD dual cores are absolutely horrible, please don't put them on the same level as core 2 duo.
