is it important to get a chassis with the psu in top if you're buying a passive psu? I can't find much info on the net about this...

Seems like top-mounted with no venting on top would be worse for the power supply, bottom-mounted would be worse for the video card, and top-mounted with venting on top would be ideal. If it's mounted at the bottom, you will have some heat rising into your video card area. Granted, intensive usage of 200W from the wall at 90% efficiency means no more than 20W heat output anyway. This is just my uninformed opinion.

So options with top-mounted power supply with venting on top include Antec Solo II, Antec NSK3480, Silverstone TJ08-E, Silverstone PS07 I think. I don't know of others from memory.

I'm leaning toward the Silverstone PS07, but isnt the rear exhaust fan in the bottom (well the motherboard is reversed, so up and down is a bit more diffuse)? Is that a problem? The question is if the fanless seasonic psu can handle the heat exhausted from the nearby video card in that case I assume. I wish that there was some way to place a chassis fan to direct heat from the gpu out of the case...

Fanless Seasonic X400? I'd worry about everything else before the power supply. It costs so much because it's overbuilt so much. Even if you manage to get the intake into the power supply at 45C, it's not like you'll be running it at 100% load (and even then, it can handle the load).

If you use two fans in front and one in back, there should be some positive pressure forcing a small amount of air out the back vents rather than up into a few holes in the side of the PSU. The bottom side of the PSU facing into the case doesn't have any holes. Actually, most of the heat from the graphics card isn't going to go through the PSU, right?

I couldn't find any picture of the bottom of the psu (yeah the 460FL), but if its closed then maybe that's a no-issue, or rather if it's so sturdy maybe it's better to mount it upside down to intake some hot air and slowly exhaust to the rear?

Regarding the GPU, I bought an Alpenföhn Peter with 2 Noctua NF-S12B-ULN (500-700rpm). They will obviously just push down air through the heatsink, dunno where the air will go next. I haven't tested it yet, but will check tomorrow if it'll be inaudible and enough to cool a gtx 460 (and in the future 7850/kepler) sufficiently. Maybe I won't even need the fans. I know it's a bit expensive solution, but I don't want to wait half a year for an eventual passive mid-range gpu release. Downgrading to a 7750 seems a bit too extreme. I'm also not 100% the heatsink will fit between the PCI card slots and the PSU, but the headroom seems sufficient.

So basically, these components (+3 of those noctua fans), ivy bridge+HR-02 whenever it's released and it's all done...

Well it's not completely closed, but pretty much it is:

Seasonic X actually uses some thermal pads between the bottom of the PCB and the housing to transfer some heat from some of the silicon.

What's the best power supply for a 6770/i3-2100ish build? I was thinking maybe the 400W version of the Antec Neo Eco, but I'm not sure. Or should I just get something like the xfx core?

CAPSTONE 450W when they come back for sale. You can go for the Neo Eco but also Corsair 430CX V2.

I would try waiting for the CAPSTONE though. Thats a really efficient PSU and your power bill will thank you..... eventually.

For now, is it worth it to get a 550W capstone for a 7950/i5-2400 build instead of a 520W Neo Eco? (I am making like 5 different builds for my school's computer building club XD. I would normally put in a 2500k but these are a lot of freshman and none of them really know what they're doing. I think it is 20$ more than the Antec one.)

That build can also use the 450W CAPSTONE so I dont know how to answer that completely.

Also, your school buys graphics cards? >.>

Don't let the taxpayers know, or I hope its a private school heh.

Thats overvolted RAM. Try to stick with 1.5V RAM.

Sorry let me claryify

I knew the Capstone 450W could run it, but like you said, it's out of stock. In lieu of that, would the capstone 550W be a better choice or the Antec Neo Eco 520W be? (20$ less)

It is a private school, XD but we have a computer building club. Our physics teacher teaches mostly freshman how to assemble computers and stuff, but he's asking me to help put together basic builds because I know more than him in the actual part selection process

I WOULD recommend waiting on the capstone, but as the assembly is all done during school, and they're on a schedule, I can't really just say "just wait" which is why I'm looking for a decent alternative

I'm sorry, I linked the wrong RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148477

Double Edit: Is there anything wrong with the parts here? If I recall, the CX430 needs a molex adapter or some such to run a 6870? That comes with the PSU/GPU correct?

Yeah low voltage is fine, preferable in fact.

Corsair 430CX V2 is currently on Newegg for $35 after rebate. I would probably go with that unless you have some noise constraints I dont know about.

Also one guy complained on forums about obnoxious coil whine from a defective model, so I would be sure to be in a place where I could return the unit and not worry about everything in the schedule falling down. Which seems like you are in a good spot for.

I'll edit the RAM then, take a look at the above if you have the time?

I saw that haha. I think in the case of a defect it would be fine to replace, because either I or the teacher can easily deal with single cases, I just can't say "wait on this power supply"

Sapphire should package at least one Molex to PCI-e adapter with every card so generally I would say that you should be all set but I would place a call into Sapphire just to make sure.

I should know because I have like 45 Molex to PCI-e adapters all from Sapphire cards Ive bought.

I suppose I should be asking what your school needs an i5-2500 for instead of an i3-2100 or something along those lines, as well as a 6870, but Im ok with whatever i guess.

You can get memory in combo with GPU for $199, as opposed to $205 (35 + $170) when bought separately: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.817329

Same can be said for CPU and DVD burner for $215, as opposed to $223 ($17 + $205) bought separately: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.822363

If you're not restricted to Newegg and don't mind having multiple orders. You can get HAF 912 for $50 from NCIX or Amazon. Seagate Barracuda 500GB can also be had from either retailer for ~$75.

It's not for the school, it's just a club ran by the school through a teacher moderator (Have ta have one in high school haha.) The buyers of the build would be kids freshman - senior (most seem to be freshman though). And the vast majority are interested in gaming I think our school uses like Core 2 Duos or something in the PCs on campus. Nothing fancy.

Yeah I sort of figured as much.

Computer Assembly is an incredibly common course in every highschool. Public ones as well, though rarely is the tech so advanced. In this case since the kids are buying the computers. Or really the kids parents I guess heh.

quick question, im looking to replace my GPU, its a geforce 8800 gtx (very old) im pretty out of touch of what a good GPU is now adays, and was wondering what a good upgrade would be, my budget is very low less than 100$

some examples, and why they are better would be perfect if anyone has time thanks in advance

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3
2 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)

and a 550 watt power supply (dont know model off hand)

If you're under 100, but still near it, I think a 6770 is a good choice. Its pretty much best price /performance you can get there I believe.

using this one as an example of a 6770, it says its a 128 bit interface, my current one is 384 bit, although the 6770 uses ddr5 instead of 3. also the 6770 has 800 stream processors, where mine only has 128. i really dont know what alot of stuff means , so im wondering how big of an upgrade would the 6770 be?

also as a side question, it says the 6770 needs pci express 2.1, where as my mother board only has 2.0 slots, is the 6770 even possible for me?

Pci is backwards compatible etc. So yes you can use it.

The memory bit isn't really what you look at. I would imagine the 6770 is a decent upgrade but I'm not sure, since I didn't even know what a gpu was back five years ago or whatever xD, so you will need to wait on skyr or myrmidon or medrea. Again if I had to guess, it should at least be an upgrade
