Is overclocking considered the 'norm' now? Will it hurt my system after 1 or 2 years of prolonged use? I've never really looked into overclocking, but if it's more safe and stable now then I might go for it.

Overclocking has always been the norm. Reasonable overclocking does not drastically decrease the lifespan of any components. You'll be long replacing your components before it dies from a mild overclock.

Is 47 considered a mild overclock or would I do better with 44?

This may be the wrong thread to ask this since it's somewhat off topic but I'm hoping someone can help. I'm sort of knowledgeable around computers, have built several of them, but just never learned how to overclock a processor. Is there a simple step by step process posted anywhere? I have a core i5 750, what settings would be appropriate for a moderate, not-really-pushing-it overclock?

I've tried searching for info and found complete noob info like "overclock is setting your processor to run slightly faster, it's done in the BIOS" without a how-to, and found overly complex discussions of the minutiae of overclocking written by experts. But I just need to know what to change and what to change it to... I'm not too comfortable poking around with things like voltage settings unless I'm sure I'm doing it right.

@SleepTech

This really depends on the luck of getting a good processor or not. I would consider anything under 1.35v for a Sandybridge to be mild (keep in mind that the definition of mild differs from one individual to another). Some people have reportedly been able to achieve 4.7GHz at 1.3v.

@Chocobo

There's many guides that explain what to change and what value to change it to along with explaining what each setting is for. You're just going to refine your Google searches further, here are some I found:

Thanks for the response, and I sure appreciate the help you guys are providing for the TL community.

@ Myrm: I'd just as soon keep as high of an fps as possible so probably will stick with the i5, and maybe it'll work for me a bit longer.

Will this build run SC2 on high, or ultra, or what should my reasonable expectation be?

@skyR: yeah I messed up the link, but that PSU looks fine to me, so I replaced the one I had as this looks like a better deal.

My current rig(built last year, about a week before sc2 release):
gigabyte x58a ud3r (rev 2)
i7 930 OC to 3.61 (HT on) (190x19)
scythe mugen 2 cpu cooler
mushkin redline RAM 1600 6-8-6-24 @ 1520MhZ (190x8) 6gb(solid RAM, but quite overkill if you don't use a ramdisk).
2x spinpoint f3 1 TB (raid1, system+storage)
1x WD 250 Gb (from old machine(bootable system backup + critical files backup))
antec p183 case (at time of purchase, was one of 3 cases that could fit PSU without modification.)
antec cp 850 PSU (my favorite component in the whole case)
evga gtx 260 core 216 (loud and overheats, had to remove 1 drive tray)
samsung lightscribe dvd burner

Upgrades:
Gigabyte 6870 w/ windforce cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125357 (in the mail right now, may have to remove upper drive cage, depending on size)
SSD, ocz vertex 3 max iops OR any other SSD w/ good 4k random performance.(maybe when prices drop more, I rarely restart, use a ramdisk for super demanding stuff, and am usually waiting on other players for load time)

If I was building a computer for same purpose right now(quiet, sc2 @1080p, video encoding, reliable, flexible, expandable):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371024 antec cp 850 psu 120 (same as current machine)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129174 p183 case 150(same as current machine)
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354589 i5 2500k cpu 180 microcenter
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128500 ~150 mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185142 scythe mugen 2 40(same as current machine)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226099 95 8GB RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 65 HDDx2(same as current machine)
GPU powercolor 6850 SCS3 (1 or 2, depending on monitor size, and whether I play other more demanding games) (ziptie silent case fans to them) Announced, but haven't seen them in stores yet. Otherwise I'd try the asus or gigabyte 6850s w/ good coolers.

@Herculis

Yes, the build is capable of handling SC2 on ultra at 1920x1200, with some slowdowns during the later stages of big team games or custom maps.

Would the numbers on this graph for the 2500k at 3.3Ghz be equivalent to the 2500? i.e. the non unlocked version

Besides the stronger integrated graphics and an unlocked multiplier, the 2500 and 2500k are identical to each other so yes the performance numbers for the 2500k at stock speeds would be equivalent to that of a 2500.

Sleeptech, you could cut the SSD. Can someone clarify the benefits of a SSD? I know any programs on it will load faster, but is that really worth spending $100+ especially for a budget build just for faster loading times?

$1000 isn't really a budget build but I guess the definition of budget differs from one to another.

Whether it be worth it or not would also differ from one to another. Not really worth it for Starcraft II as you'll going to be waiting for the other people to load anyways. But for a game with lots of loading that isn't dependent on another person such as WoW or another RPG game, the cost would easily be worth it in my eyes.

I found this and it is around my price range. Is it a reliable source and a good build? http://www.hardware-revolution.com/high-end-gaming-pc-q2-2011/

That's the price range where for most tasks (i.e. not gaming across multiple displays or professional computer design/manipulation, etc.) you're throwing away money and getting negligible additional benefit over something more reasonable. If you want to spend that much, I'd consider putting part of the budget on a higher-end monitor, sound system, peripherals, etc.

Prices, as usual for this kind of thing, aren't quite up to date and they don't reflect any particular deals that could be going on. I've never seen that source before, but most of the choices look pretty reasonable to me if that's how much money you're going to spend on the computer itself, particularly the tier 3 "best bang for buck" build.

Okay but is it a good source/build cause I have taken money out of my budget for peripherals and this is what I have left.

sweet spot IMO, most bang for buck. This is a good starting point to get you started.

Which one are you looking at? Even Tier 8 is way overkill usually, or it may be overkill in the wrong areas and ill-suited for what you're doing. What's your precise budget and what kind of monitors/peripherals are you getting? Is this for gaming, and what else? Computers get faster because of advances in the manufacturing process and new or improved logic circuits. The top stuff you buy today--that has a hefty price premium over the good price/performance picks--is going to get outdated almost just as quickly.

The exact choice of power supply, case, CPU cooler, and particularly SSD I would disagree with a bit, but like I said, there's no way a list like this can keep up with the newest products and deals.

Before you spend like $600 or more in graphics cards, I want to see at least a 2560x1600 monitor or three (or more) monitors in Eyefinity or Nvidia Surround. Just making sure you have the needs for that kind of setup.

Tier 8 with blu-ray. I want it for gaming and videos (movies, hulu, sc2 vods). Thanks for the help. (Gosh this shows me how overpriced macs are.)

As already mentioned, unless you are planning on playing on a 30" monitor or have three 24" monitors, spending $2000 on a configuration is not necessary. Games can easily be maxed on a single 24" monitor with a $1000 budget.

Interesting. The new Elder Scrolls V coming out this November pops into my mind immediately when thinking about games that would benefit from this. I probably won't include one with my initial build, but this is something very easy to add-on later, correct?
