Maybe they make up for the low margins through word of mouth advertising and the resulting volume of sales?

Should still be in budget:

And t ~$240 pricepoint you can get the HD 7850

Total with the cheapest GPU: $649.92 pretax and before MIR

I am no expert so you might want to wait for more/other responses.

imo you should spend abit more on the gpu (maybe even 7850) if you can, and next year get a nice monitor, the computer should last you a good three years.

It's possible it's just a loss leader, or they might have a special deal with Intel.

I just plugged in a 6/8 pin PCI-e cable from the power supply into the 4/4 pin connector on my motherboard (the one that powers the CPU). This ins't supposed to happen, and I tried to power up the system while they were connected the wrong way.

How fucked am I right now?

So I just got a new computer, but my GPU's fan doesn't work anymore. It's a GEForce 9800 GT. I think I'd rather upgrade the video card rather than buying a new fan for it, any ideas on what to buy?

I play games at a 1600x900 resolution. I play SC2 (which my Intel 4000 HD card actually runs amazingly, lol), Blacklight: Retribution, GTA 4, Saints Row, stuff like that. Nothing extremely graphically intensive, but stuff that still need a decent card to run.

I was looking at the GTX 550 Ti though: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625

Based on Newegg reviews, it looks amazing. Based on Tom's Hardware reviews, it's a few tiers above what I have now and looks to be 1. a solid upgrade and 2. something that will last a long time. I wasn't able to find any benchmarking results for it on anandtech. What do you guys think?

What is your power supply/budget and are you looking into playing other games?

You are better off with this:

better performance, less power/heat and etc

Radeon HD 7850 brands? I am going to buy a Radeon HD 7850 for my rig but I am unclear about some of the differences between brands such as ASUS, MSI, and Sapphire. My rig is- i5-2500K, ASUS z68 mobo, 8 gigs 1.65v ram, 1.5 caviar green HD, all powered by a Cooler Masters 500watt PSU. I was looking at the ASUS 7850 but it is always sold out so could someone tell me the differences besides the general things?

My bad.. I completely forgot to post such obvious stuff lol. Power supply is 650 W so that shouldn't be too much of an issue, as far as price range, anywhere from $100 to $150, maybe a little bit more if it's a really good deal. I tend to play whatever, I stick to SC2 most of the time but I pick up new games if they're really good. I don't obsess over graphics so as long as the card can run newer games without any lag on low/medium settings, I'm fine with that.

Edit: I guess another thing to add is that I do want to run dual monitor at some point in the future. If I'm able to, I'm fine with just running my main monitor on the GPU and my other monitor on the integrated card, not sure if that's possible though.

Okay but is there really a difference between the cheaper sapphire and the one thats a little more? (aside from core clock) Because if the cheaper one will be the exact same when i OC it then there would be no point.

I think going with the one I suggested should be good enough for you, I dont see why you should spend more, its 10$ less than the 550Ti ($110 after MIR), comes with free game and as you can see in benchmarks, its better/cooler/more power efficient. and its going to be much better than what you have now, so I dont think you will be disappointed.

but incase you are interested, the next price points are 6850 at $150, 6870 @ $170 and the 560ti at $200.

edit: and to answer your multi display question, you will connect one monitor via HDMI and other via DVI

the 550Ti you posted has 2 DVI and one mini HDMI. (still only 2 screen outputs i think)

Ones that are clocked higher have a higher probability to oc a bit higher, that's all, and it's only a probability

though i saw someone OC their hd7850 to almost 7950 performance, for half the price, that's nice

Depends on the brand, too. Some brands, a factory OC will just cause chaos if you play anything that actually pushes it above ~85%, because the factory OC/voltage settings don't always work out with the samples they got under max loads.

I'm not entirely sure who gets the best binned shit, though. I get really lazy on things like that since I'm such an EVGA fanboy.

Well i can't tell, all GPU's i've ever got couldn't handle a 10% OC without crahsing every 30 seconds so....

exept my old laptop's GPU, i OC'D that shit like 30-40% never got a problem, heat was even fine (especially for a laptop, never went above 75° if i recall right, and that was at 100% usage)

I'm a big fan of trying to explode mine. Hence being an EVGA fanboy. I think most other companies would just laugh in my face if I tried to open an RMA.

Well, my gtx 590 was able to hit only 650... with baseclock being at 607, otherwise it just plain crash's
edit : well i'll admit it only crashs in really graphic intense games (metro crysis and only those 2, but's already enough for me to lower clocks a bit)

my hd6870 had to basicly be at stock otherwise it would from time to time crash

My 460s were at 825, up from the stock 650. (Mine were old, not the v2's that came higher stock and OCed to 900 nicely.)

My 560Ti's are only at 875 right now (stock 822), but that's mostly out of laziness borne from having a toddler who doesn't allow me to sleep.
