I have a budget of about 400 dollars, 500-600 at the most, though I'd really want to get as much as possible really cheap.
My HDD is the only part that is semi-up-to-date, a 500GB S-ATA2, so that doesn't need immediate replacement, but pretty much everything else has to go. I also don't need a case nor OS.
I want to use this PC for gaming, mainly, but I want to do some software development on it, too. My monitor is 17'' and I run 1280x1024
I could put it off for another month or two if it's suggested, and I may even get a bit more money in the meantime, whatever you say, TL.
Thank you.
Not sure if the following would be the cheapest place to buy. I recommend comparing the price (especially after tax & shipping) with other potential vendors for you. The GPU takes your monitor (and budget) into account. It won't be quite as awesome if you upgrade to a 1920x1080 monitor. Also, some items may not currently in stock, but should be available through hardwareversand.de pretty regularly.
Case & stuffs: 86 euro Merc Alpha, Super Flower Amazon 400w, dvd-burner http://www2.hardwareversand.de/Midi/61767/Special item: BitFenix Merc Alpha.article http://www2.hardwareversand.de/400 - 500 Watts/30074/Super-Flower Amazon 80Plus 450W.article http://www2.hardwareversand.de/S-ATA/49433/Sony Optiarc AD-7280S-0B schwarz.article
Core CPU components: 269 euro i5-3450 (pretty high-end for your budget, but not overclockable) MSI B75MA-P45 motherboard, g.skill 2x4gb value ram http://www2.hardwareversand.de/Socket 1155/56298/Intel Core i5-3450 Box, LGA1155.article http://www2.hardwareversand.de/DDR3/58060/MSI B75MA-P45, Intel B75, mATX, DDR3.article http://www2.hardwareversand.de/1333 Low Voltage/44315/8GB-Kit G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9.article
GPU: XFX 6770 (87 euro) http://www2.hardwareversand.de/1024 MB/48936/XFX RADEON HD 6770 850M 1GB DDR5 DUAL DVI, Mini HDMI.article
Total: 442 Euro
You could improve the graphics card, such as by getting this 7770 (+30 euro) http://www2.hardwareversand.de/1024 MB/59887/MSI R7770-PMD1GD5, 1024MB DDR5, PCI-Express.article or you could pay another 100 or so euro for the ability to overclock, but the above is probably what I'd go with.
Again, the budget is weighted towards processor rather than GPU because of your small resolution. If you plan to upgrade your monitor in the near future, a budget with a worse CPU in favor of a better GPU might be better for you. But this will do everything you want it to until you upgrade your monitor. Even then the 6770 will play any game smoothly if you don't mind low settings and easy-to-run games like SC2 or Diablo 3 should manage high or maximum graphics. The 7770 would improve that somewhat.
Edit: if you wanted as cheap as possible gaming rig, you can replace the CPU & mobo with the following: http://www2.hardwareversand.de/DDR3/59560/MSI H61M-P20 (G3), Intel H61, mATX.article http://www2.hardwareversand.de/DDR3/59560/MSI H61M-P20 (G3), Intel H61, mATX.article
That would drop the price by a little over 100 euro.

Thank you very much, I was afraid my post would be forgotten but it seems like it wasn't. 442 euro is doable, but I'll have to stretch a bit, maybe I'll even find these parts cheaper at the local stores/online. Gratitude!
oh yay, it's already my birthday in the states
Yeah, the CPU is a bit too much for my budget, wouldn't an i3 2120 be enough? I'm no expert, that's why I am asking, but it seems like many people praise that CPU, so I guess it must be good.
I'm not familiar with that website but didn't you link the same mobo twice at the end?
|
Edit: It seems like quote != edit Sorry
|
Hmm looks like I did link the same mobo twice at the end. I meant to add a g630 with it. The i3 would work fine, by the way.

Does this graphics card require any additional power, or can I just put it in the PCIe slot?

Quick OC question: I'm looking to overclock my ivy bridge (3770k) soon. This is my first OC attempt, so I'm going to play it as safe as possible. Is there a guide somewhere that's Ivy bridge specific anyone can recommend?
I've heard you can push your processor to ~3.9/4.0 on stock voltage, should I bother tweaking it on air cooling for another 200-300mhz?

greetings fellow TLers! i posted in this thread a number of months ago in regards to building a new gaming pc and got some awesome help. someone had built the pc suited for me and selected all the parts i needed, however, i was not able to go through with building the unit due to being called up for army duties unexpectedly. i just got back home about a week ago and i want to try this again
here's the questions i answered to help build me a gaming rig! + Show Spoiler + i mainly play HoN/DotA 2/SC2.
Budget: 700$ Gaming resolution: 1280x1024 Main use: Gaming Upgrade cycle: 1 year Planned date of purchase: Within the next month Overclocking: No Operating system required: No Crossfire/SLI: No Buying parts from NCIX.com
(already have all computer peripherals)
thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help me out...

The only graphics cards that are faster, that likewise only take power from the slot, are HD 6670 with GDDR5 memory, GT 640, and HD 7750.

I haven't really followed closely, but even to say 4.2-4.3 GHz you can probably just up the voltage by about 0.05V (chip dependent), set that clock speed, and it will work so long as you've got better than stock cooling. For long-term use, mild increases in voltage is probably not an issue, particularly if the CPU isn't under 24/7 high load and if the power-saving features are left on.

thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help me out... NCIX weekly deals reset on Wednesday, so anybody helping is probably going to wait at least until tonight. If "within the next month" means not in the next 7 days, then maybe come back during the week you'll actually purchase.

I'm not an OC expert, but here's my experience with the 3770k: Overclocking to 4.2Ghz is a piece of cake. Set multiplier to 42, done! No need for voltage adjustment and the temps at 4.2 shouldn't rise by much. I think only from 4.4 onwards you'll have to play with voltage and look out for the temps.
Not sure how high you want to go, but if you're just looking for a slight OC you should be totally fine with 4.2Ghz at stock voltage with stock cooler. (Every system is different so be sure to do proper tests ofc)

Microcenter has i52500k for just 169.99 not sure if everyone knows this or not but its porbably the most common processor being used in all these builds so just FYI. 60$ cheaper than newegg

Its also in-store only and Mico Center does not have a lot of locations (additionally none outside of US). Therefore, you have to be lucky enough to be near one or know someone who is near one. However if you do have one close by they have really nice deals such as the one stated above or the i5-3750k for $189.99.

I'm trying to get together some components for a build but i'm quite uncertain as to what is so good about each motherboard.
i want the best motherboard for the i52500k.what should i look for in a motherboard?
integrated means there is a video card on board already so it takes up some of the cpus ram so for gaming i dont want this right?

Hey guys.
I'm looking for some help with building a small business server (no clue if I need any specific things or what). Here's what I have so far:
Intel i3-2120 - $110 after coupon (do I need to be worried about thermal paste, or should the stock fan be sufficient?) 2x Caviar Blue 500GB - $130 8GB G.Skill Value Series RAM - $39 GIGABYTE GA-H77M-D3H Motherboard - $95 Cooler Master 430 Case - $30 after coupon & MIR Sony DVD Drive - $17 Rosewill 120mm Case Fan - $7 Antec Earthwatts 380W - $43
Total: $471. Are there parts I should get at lower prices? Also more specifically, I plan to set up the 2 HDDs in raid1 using the onboard controller on the mobo. Will this suffice, or would I need a dedicated controller? (really small business, but the files are really important so availability is crucial) Lastly, is 8GB RAM overkill? If I were building a home system I would definitely go with 8, but I'm not so sure about a server.
Thanks! edit: another thing; what OS would you guys recommend? Ubuntu or some other Linux distro, or Windows Home Server or SBS?

Hey all! I'm putting together my own computer for the first time and I'm looking for help finishing up my build. I'm aiming to spend less than $2000 on hardware, and I think I'll be able to stay within that range easily (although I can go a little over if I really want to). I'll be running Windows 7 Home Premium on two monitors, one at 1280x1024 and the other at 1920x1080. I'll be playing pretty much every sort of game at 1920x1080, including RTS (StarCraft II), FPS (Tribes: Ascend, Quake Live), and third person sandbox (Sleeping Dogs, GTA V). In addition, I will also be doing some programming (not progaming!) and streaming, as well as casual music listening (via Spotify). I'm going to hold onto this computer for maybe 4 years with only minor upgrades, so the goal of this build is to absolutely demolish modern programs on my monitor setup so that future programs will still run pretty well.
Here's the parts list so far: + Show Spoiler +gpu: ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU II TOP ($430) cpu: Intel i7 3770K LGA 1155 ($350) hard drive (system): Crucial m4 256 GB SSD ($190) hard drive (storage): 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD or something similar (<$100) ram: 1 8GB DDR3 module ($40) optical drive: Lite-On Internal DVD Writer ($18) total so far: $1150 or so
I'm planning to buy all of the parts this month, mostly from a local Microcenter but I'll shop around online for better deals on the same components. I am *not* planning to overclock now, but I might overclock the cpu a few years down the road to keep performance up (the gpu is already factory overclocked by kind of a lot). I doubt I'll ever get a second video card for SLI.
The things I still need to know are: + Show Spoiler +1) Are there any glaring issues with my setup so far? 2) What motherboard should I buy, or at the very least, which chipset should I use? I'm using the 1155 socket type. I know that I want pretty good onboard audio (don't want to scrape the very bottom of the sound barrel) but also enough room to put on a dedicated sound card later (just in case), and I hear Asus is good for that, but other than that I have no idea how to narrow my choices down. I want onboard NIC for ethernet but I hear most motherboards have that these days. I probably want at least four usb ports in total (mouse, keyboard, plus two or more extra) if that's a factor. I'm about 80% certain that I won't need to connect a wireless card for WiFi: I'll update as soon as I find out for sure if I'll be setting up a wired connection. 3) I need an aftermarket cpu cooler (especially if I overclock in the future), so which one should I get? Am I wrong in assuming that air cooling should be fine for my needs and still relatively quiet? Finally, if you're suggesting a motherboard, will I need an aftermarket cooler for it as well? (I think the stock fan on the gpu is fine; that's why I picked it over the EVGA ftw edition.) 4) Any case suggestions? I haven't even looked for this yet, because obviously the motherboard is a factor, but I want it as small as possible for the components I'm using (I'll need to move the computer around occasionally, so a case any bigger than I need is a liability) without sacrificing too much airflow. The only upgrades I'm seriously planning to make are a dedicated sound card and potentially another 8 GB of RAM, so I don't need to leave too much space for that purpose.
Thank you all so much for helping P.S.- I know that I need a PSU. I figure I can pick that out by myself later, but if anyone has suggestions they're appreciated. edit- I forgot to mention this explicitly, but I do live in America, so Europe-only deals are out.
