Yeah I figured I wouldn't need it for the more basic things since a super old P4 can do the same just fine. I guess it can't hurt, plus it's on sale right now; iirc it's actually cheaper than the i3-2100. edit: also, should 4GB RAM be enough? Was considering 8GB but I know that right now it's a lot more than I'll need.

As for the actual case (this is like 2-3 pages back but my original post got no responses), there's going to be 2 120mm fans; one in the front and one either on the side or at the back. With the stock CPU fan and nothing else, the two fans should be enough, right? (also a 380W Antec EarthWatts PSU)

Maybe you should check out the new WD Red drives, unless you need slightly better random access. http://promotions.newegg.com/WD/12-2738/index.html

Maybe you should check out the new WD Red drives, unless you need slightly better random access. http://promotions.newegg.com/WD/12-2738/index.html So no need for an additional fan, then? Also, didn't check for many other mobos, but http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128540 this one does look pretty good. Saves a good $35; only drawback is that there's only 1 SATAIII port, but that really doesn't matter I suppose since I'm not using SSD. Thanks for the tip. I saw the WD Red drives in the news actually, but they're quite a bit more expensive than something like the Barracuda ($80/1TB right now which seems like a really good deal) or Caviar Blue. edit again: I can save $20 or so by getting a Corsair CX430 over the Antec 380D; is this a good choice? I know I don't need that much power, but would the 80+bronze in the Antec be worth the investment?

I'm aiming to spend less than $2000 on hardware, and I think I'll be able to stay within that range easily (although I can go a little over if I really want to). I'll be running Windows 7 Home Premium on two monitors, one at 1280x1024 and the other at 1920x1080. I'll be playing pretty much every sort of game at 1920x1080, including RTS (StarCraft II), FPS (Tribes: Ascend, Quake Live), and third person sandbox (Sleeping Dogs, GTA V). In addition, I will also be doing some programming (not progaming!) and streaming, as well as casual music listening (via Spotify). I'm going to hold onto this computer for maybe 4 years with only minor upgrades, so the goal of this build is to absolutely demolish modern programs on my monitor setup so that future programs will still run pretty well. Here's the parts list so far: + Show Spoiler + gpu: ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU II TOP ($430) cpu: Intel i7 3770K LGA 1155 ($350) hard drive (system): Crucial m4 256 GB SSD ($190) hard drive (storage): 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD or something similar (<$100) ram: 1 8GB DDR3 module ($40) optical drive: Lite-On Internal DVD Writer ($18) total so far: $1150 or so I'm planning to buy all of the parts this month, mostly from a local Microcenter but I'll shop around online for better deals on the same components. I am *not* planning to overclock now, but I might overclock the cpu a few years down the road to keep performance up (the gpu is already factory overclocked by kind of a lot). I doubt I'll ever get a second video card for SLI. The things I still need to know are: + Show Spoiler + 1) Are there any glaring issues with my setup so far? 2) What motherboard should I buy, or at the very least, which chipset should I use? I'm using the 1155 socket type. I know that I want pretty good onboard audio (don't want to scrape the very bottom of the sound barrel) but also enough room to put on a dedicated sound card later (just in case), and I hear Asus is good for that, but other than that I have no idea how to narrow my choices down. I want onboard NIC for ethernet but I hear most motherboards have that these days. I probably want at least four usb ports in total (mouse, keyboard, plus two or more extra) if that's a factor. I'm about 80% certain that I won't need to connect a wireless card for WiFi: I'll update as soon as I find out for sure if I'll be setting up a wired connection. 3) I need an aftermarket cpu cooler (especially if I overclock in the future), so which one should I get? Am I wrong in assuming that air cooling should be fine for my needs and still relatively quiet? Finally, if you're suggesting a motherboard, will I need an aftermarket cooler for it as well? (I think the stock fan on the gpu is fine; that's why I picked it over the EVGA ftw edition.) 4) Any case suggestions? I haven't even looked for this yet, because obviously the motherboard is a factor, but I want it as small as possible for the components I'm using (I'll need to move the computer around occasionally, so a case any bigger than I need is a liability) without sacrificing too much airflow. The only upgrades I'm seriously planning to make are a dedicated sound card and potentially another 8 GB of RAM, so I don't need to leave too much space for that purpose. Thank you all so much for helping ![]() P.S.- I know that I need a PSU. I figure I can pick that out by myself later, but if anyone has suggestions they're appreciated. edit- I forgot to mention this explicitly, but I do live in America, so Europe-only deals are out. This got buried a few pages back :S I still need some help.

Also, I believe the HD6850 is around the same price at the HD7770 and I believe it outperforms it. Edit: Are there any combos deals for the Intel Core i5 3450? If you aren't going to overclock, why pay for for the K series processor and Z77 motherboard? All you really need is a basic H77 or B75 motherboard.

Case: Rosewill Challenger (I was stupid when I bought it and went with the cheapest one I saw) Motherboard: ASRock Extreme3 Gen3 Z68 CPU: Intel i5 2500k GPU: Radeon 7870 (I think I have the Saphire one) PSU: Antec 650w 80+ Bronze Memory: 8 GB Corsair Vengeance RAM @1600 Mhz Sound Card: HT Omega 7.1 Surround Sound HDD: 500 GB 7200 RPM (not sure which company, shouldn't make too big of a difference) So, here's my questions: 1.) To add CPU cooling to overclock my 2500k, I need to remove a fan from my case. How challenging/time intensive will this be, and will I noticeable any large jumps in temps? 2.) Will I get a good speed boost if I decide to add in an SSD? Basically is the price:performance ratio good enough to bother dropping money on a reputable SSD? 3.) Is it difficult/dangerous to OC GPUs (basically, if I screw up, can I mess up my graphics card beyond repair)? If you have any recommendations for a good SSD, please link them. I live in the US, and I can get a discount on Tigerdirect, and I live right next to a Microcenter, so preferably one of those two, but Newegg is fine as well.

A solid state drive doesnt add performance, it just makes things load faster, like a game map or your OS environment. How much that is worth is up to you. A good SSD depends on your budget though. It is easy to overclock GPU's, but yes you can break one. Stay away from tweaking the voltage at all unless you have very specific and very reputable information at hand. You can change clock speed however you want, just make sure to read temperatures as you are doing so. I encourage you to overclock your GPU for sure. I have many many cards trying to overclock them, and they always bounce back as long as I dont fuck with the voltage in any way. Slow and steady wins the race here, try tweaking to a certain value you know will work, and then every day try 5 mhz faster until your system farks up and then back down. You can also run a test on the GPU.

For the CPU, I think I'm probably going to remove the fan and get a 212 to cool my processor. For the GPU, I'll just look up what other people have OC'd to safely and lower that by a bit and then just take it up from there. Thanks for the fast response.
