I don’t think anyone can change the passing of the seasons (laughs). A lot of time has flowed by, and I need to think about my life going forward. Whatever I end up doing, I’ll do it while remaining thankful that I remained in the minds of some fans. I’d be thankful if when people think of StarCraft, they remembered that there was once a player called Jaedong.

That's so sad to me People will remember you and if they don't i will be there to remember them
I wish JD the best, no matter what he does now, hopefully no OW though hehe

Really happy that we got a great interview like that. Thanks so much!

Too bad his career does not end on a high and that 2016 was so weird, but hopefully we will see him again in the future somewhere, somehow.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

I knew this day was coming, and I'm still sad. But the interview was so sweet, that it helps the hurt just a little bit.

Jaedong was and is, and will forever be, my favorite Starcraft player of all time. His dedication and focus and desire to win at all costs was inspiring.

I will never forget that there was a player named Jaedong, and that in my heart, he was the greatest player of all time.

In 2011 I made this image in Photoshop to be sent to him as inspiration as part of a package started on TL by a fan in a thread called "A Zergling for Jaedong". I hope he remembers it. I'm no artist, but he inspired me so much that I had to make something.

Fare thee well, Jaedong. May the wings of a thousand mutalisks fly you to your next adventure.

Am I wrong or is this the first Final Edit in at least two years?

I think Savior: Lord of the Battlefield Part Two was the last one right?

Anyhow amazing work. Jaedong will be missed.

I mean, I'd say YellOw was at least AS iconic. But greatest? Probably Jaedong.

Goodbye Jaedong! You have been a role model and a big part of my life for a very long time. I will never forget.
"To all eSports fans, I want to be remembered as a progamer who can make something out of nothing, and someone who always does his best. I think that is the right way of living, and I'm always doing my best to follow that." - Jaedong. /watch?v=jfghAzJqAp0

I didnt have any idea about jeadong until I started watching SC2 tournaments and soon after watching BW VoDs of him. And seeing him in SC2 was such a pleasure, this is one a the few players that I cheered for, no matter what. Theres just something about players like Jeadong or WhiteRa for example, that make me just love them so much. They are the kindest person and it felt very good having them in the scene.

Thanks for your dedication and all the great games. Goood luck in the future! We love you \o/

Never followed SC2 but glad to see beneath the veneer of Tyrant he remained a genuinely good guy. IMO that's a quality you need to be among the greatest of all time, even though I was more inspired by sAviOr's zerg. Hope this is not the last we hear from him

JD, by far the most successful player across both SC games. FlaSh may have been an unequivocal great in BW, slightly above JD, but JD showed a consistency during 2013 that FlaSh could not parallel.

Can't wait to see him on Afreeca, if he ends up there. Maybe if he shows up, FlaSh won't be 20% higher than everybody else in winrate...

Also, he's so freaking cute

Good luck to whatever Jaedong does in the future, I'm sure he will excel at everything he does with his attitude and discipline. I hope he enjoys the fruits of his labor from the past years. I remember watching this guy play the likes of Stork and Fantasy and just dropping my jaw at some of the moments.

-_- You guys should take out the silly EG. from the title considering he was a player of many teams and his true greatness was defined in Oz. It should be Jaedong and Jaedong period.

Lots of Koreans have retired for several reasons and I rather not make a list as people might bitch & moan. Naysayers. There are a lot of variables.

Not surprising but still sad. When I was just getting into BW roughly a year before the sc2 beta, his were the games I watched the most :/

Shame he never recovered his flame from the second half of 2013 in sc2. He started that year being the butt of many jokes, but ended it rivaling Soulkey, soO, and Life as the best Zerg in the world.

soO was irrelevant in 2013 and Life wasn't really dominant either. he was definitely the 2nd best zerg in 2013 behind Soulkey.

Thanks to SC2 I met brood war legend Jaedong at a dreamhack in Bucharest. I have his autograph framed on the left wall from my desk. I hope he has a happy life whatever he decides to do. As long as I will remember starcraft I will remember him.

Flash was regarded by many as the best SC2 player after his IEM Toronto win.
probably even more so than Jaedong, when was Jaedong considered the best?

Fantastic article. I remember watching random Brood War videos at three in the morning and finding these crazy games from Jaedong and thinking "there's no way someone can be this good at StarCraft!" A really inspiring player. GGs.

Not JD nor Flash were considered the best in sc2, they actually were very disappointing. JD made a lot of money with sponsors and foreign tourneys tho.

I did not know he wasn't officially retired, wasn't he already streaming BW etc?

Nope, never streamed a thing. There were just suspicions that a high ranking Zerg on Fish was JD.

Nope, we didn't see anything from him after his Code A match, apart from a Heroes showmatch.

Since he was still on EG, he probably was not allowed to do something like streaming BW on afreeca, since EG = Amazon = Twitch.

How EG got any ROI from JD this year is something nobody knows, really weird tbh.

Hopefully he can start streaming BW now, although he will surely not do it immediately, just like Flash.

Btw I think Jaedong was considered the best zerg for a while, or at least tied first place, but never the best player. Still a huge achievement to do that in both StarCrafts.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

Great article. Great interview. Legendary player.

I knew exactly what game that first clip was going to be. Rewatching it still gives me nerdchills, Heres to hoping we'll see more final edits, they're always amazing.

Good luck onwards Jaedong.

You guys keep forgetting that at no point in time was SC2 more popular in Korea than BW in terms of player numbers. It just managed to be somewhat equal sometimes.

I just hope Jaedong will find his niche and can start a lucrative career somewhere. I'm a little worried about all the programers starting streaming on Afreeca etc as I'm pretty sure 20 years down the road they can't do that anymore.

So yeah, just all the best to him.

Would have been in 2013. I also don't recall anyone ever saying Flash was considered the best SC2 player. Jaedong was never the best sc2 player, but in 2013 he was considered one of the best zergs. He had like 5-6 Finals where he placed 2nd and in Blizzcon when he beat Dear (who was considered one of the best sc2 players as he had just won GSL and was crushing people). I remember people saying Dear would 3-0 Jaedong which didn't happen.

I don't think Jaedong was ever the best player at SC2, but he was definitely at the top in 2013 and his results prove that. Was a good/sad year for a Jaedong fan because of all his second places, especially when he made some really silly decisions

EGTL! Oh, my good lord.

Jaedong, thanks for all the fun and entertainment. Thanks for awesome games among two games, for emotions, and for one short handshake at ESL studios in Cologne.

All the best to you in the future, Jaedong. It was always a pleasure to watch your games, and many great moments in BW as well as in SC2. Always hard working, always nice to others, you were really a great addition to the e-sports scene. There was never a nicer Tyrant than you are.

No more Jaedong?

I cannot think Zerg, or even Starcraft, without thinking Jaedong.

I never met him in person, but I saw him live in 2008 in Cologne at the World Cyber Games.

Via internet stream, I later saw the MSL finals Jaedong versus Flash, the one with the infamous power outage. Also via stream, I saw his first GSL appearance. Jaedongs games were always something else.

In a sense, Jaedong got me into Starcraft. I were at the WCG finals to watch Warcraft III. Just to get good seats, I arrived earlier and watched those Starcraft matches. Then I saw how stacked mutas took out marines, one by one.
You don't choose to play zerg. The zerg choose you.

I was introduced to Korean BW proscene back in 2007 after home lan parties. I always had a soft spot for zergs, a race so fragile and weak, yet unstoppable when mastered. It was obvious that Jaedong would soon become my favourite player. He was different, not only in sheer skill but the risk he used to take in any game. And you know, when zergs take risks with very high probability the game becomes a drama. I remember how fierce were our arguments in LR threads on who was better Flash or Jaedong, dat fanboizm poured into the pages the keyboards were burning. I still remember Hana MSL and that stupid Triatlon map, I could hear my heart pounding. These were the times. Starcraft seemed so big back then and it seemed like it would last forever. Here we are reading the closing note from Jaedong and you've never felt so old. How can you let it go like this? No way I am. Come back to BW Jaedong, the game that never betrayed your passion and never will. We, your fans, are still here and we are waiting for your comeback.

Oh, btw TL. Why didn't you ask about the future plans and probable return to afreeca streaming? Isn't it what we all wish so badly?

I don't think either ever were considered the best in sc2. Jaedong was top-tier in the second half of 2013 but not consistently and he was always bested in the finals aside from ASUS ROG.

Flash had two strong peaks in the early days of HotS and in the second half of 2014. Neither of which put him on the world throne. Bogus, Life and Soulkey had him beat in early HotS, while Zest, soO, and Maru at a minimum had him beat during the latter peak. Then there's the issue of Flash never getting past the ro16 in GSL...

Though if it came down to it, I think Flash beat out Jaedong in sc2. He was more consistent, competed in Korea (epsecially during the Terran massacre of 2014), and flat out had more fearsome peaks.

...but at least Jaedong kicked his ass in the two encounters they met :p

Having watched almost all of his career over the years... and just finishing my favorite player's final interview...

I think you underestimate how dominant Flash was leading up to his IEM Toronto win.
I remember that TL put him only on 3rd place in the Power Rank which was highly controversial because most of the posters thought he deserved #1.

Jaedong was the main reason why I fell in love with competitive Starcraft. If there is one player I am a fan of, it's Jaedong. He kept inspiring me throughout his whole career.

I had a sexy dream about Jaedong once
When you came along so righteous with a new national hate, so convincing is the ardor of war and of men, it's harder to breathe than to believe you're a friend. The wars at home, the wars abroad, all soaked in blood and lies and fraud.
