Didn't Destiny have a tournament where people donated towards the prize pool? Also, general grassroots tournaments don't always need to have sponsors, or else no one would ever take initiative without a huge contributor. This isn't abnormal.

Now that I think about it, maybe Lone Star Clash was like this kind of thing. I'm not saying crowdfunding is bad, but I do worry that sponsors are leaving. Besides, living on crowdfunding may not be sustainable, I don't know. I do know sponsors are a tried and true business model.

Sure, but it's not like there's a HSC every month Plus, I think that LotV's release will inject new enthusiasm from the community and sponsors. I wouldn't worry too much

Sponsors want their own thing but they cant since WCS points are more relevant than anything else( even weekend tournament itself!) . I also complained about this dependence few years ago. WCS points/tier relevance hurts weekend tournaments.

Basically a lot of tournaments other than GSL and Proleague. Although, it's likely that Blizzard has been propping up GSL and contributing to its prizepool since the very beginning of SC2. Streamers also depend on subscribers now.

This... really isn't a very fair representation.

I'm so happy they got their goal so quickly, let's hope they hit 20k!
|
Didn't they do a crowd funding to move into a massive studio like a year ago?
I mean, I am glad they are getting funding, as HSC is arguably the most entertaining SC tournament, but seems like they don't manage their assets correctly and the community is being punished for it and not the organization.

wow that was quick, I hope we get the 17,5k goal.

Why is the community getting punished? You can manage your assets as good as you want. If suddenly your main sponsor drops who is absolutely needed for your tournament you will have a problem.
I'm sorry if I misunderstood your sentence... my English isn't that good

I saw this post very early, and was doubting if it would make it to 12.5k. My thoughts have been put to shame. Wp community!

Take also said on Reddit that they will add further perks, but that they need to discuss what they want to do first

I was wondering whether to donate or not, but when I read funding was for partying, drinks and what not, then I gave up. I rarely watch SC2 anyway. I'll be happy to donate a bit for a more honourable cause though.

I´m pretty they said that the crowdfunding for the studio was just for people willing to help them und to add bonus stuff. They would have moved anyway. For the HSC thing I doubt you can really blame them. I mean if they don´t get enough sponsors there is nothing you can do. And it´s not like they already spend money they don´t have.

Thats the beauty of crowdfunding - you don't actually have to pay if you don't want to.
