It happened to other esports before why it can't happen to Starcraft? Here is the problem with Starcraft crowd funding... it is happening as a result of the decline of sponsorship for SC2 as a E-Sport, not because it is up and coming and no know about it. It isn't like Starcraft is this great up and coming game that is a mod of another game, it has had big time sponsors and a professional leagues in Korea for over a decade. And the HSC has been hosted many times without any crowd funding necessary. So crowdfunding in this case isn't a way to spread the game, in this case it means the game is on life support as a viable E-Sport. I'm convinced that if Blizzard wasn't bank rolling the whole scene with WCS, we'd have no scene left. And then we have all those people arguing how great Blizzard is doing with SC2 and LOTV, how Blizzard is making the game people want, and that those people just don't visit this forum. How ignorant can we be.

How ignorant can we be. You're saying SC2 is on life support because the HSC tournament costs are not completely covered by sponsors? Sponsors are moving on to newer games, because they get a lot more bang for their invested buck in fast growing communities. They will always do that, because that's how the marketing business works: reach a growing crowd with as little investment as possible. We have enjoyed that luxury for years, and now it's starting to wane. This does not mean that SC2 is "on life support". It means that as a community, we have stabilized too much for investors to remain interested. It means that after years of free content, the viewers now need to pay a small amount to get their content. But that's not a bad deal: apparently there is a solid fanbase, otherwise the sponsor plug would have been pulled long ago. So it's an opportunity for SC2 tournaments to show whether they are a commercially viable product. It they are not, so be it. What *would* put SC2 on life support is if people who enjoyed the content for years, refuse to pay now that it matters. You can't expect all that content to be funded out of thin air.

You can't expect all that content to be funded out of thin air. I have a one word response to the bolded content: Google. No one is refusing to pay, it is that advertisers know the scene isn't growing like it should be, so they don't want to advertise here. Anyway, life support was too harsh of a term to use, SC2 isn't on life support at the moment, the scene is still quite alive. But, my point stands. Let's pretend this isn't an E-Sport, let's pretend it is a business that a friend started. You might expect him to be asking family and friends for cash to borrow if he was just getting started and couldn't get a loan, but his business made sense and was showing real positive progress right? And you'd be willing let him borrow some cash, especially since you know it is very likely he will pay you back with interest. Now let's think about another example...pretend your friend had a really successful business, then it started to fail due to some questionable design decisions and suddenly he needed cash and came to you because the banks wouldn't give him a loan... you'd probably be less willing to let him borrow cash, because clearly he went from being able to support himself to money problems, and you'd be far less confident than you'd get paid back with interest. Starcraft in general fits the second example, and that is the problem. And even the stock market likes to fund and take chances on up and comers, not businesses about to fail. Starcraft shouldn't need crowd funding. It just needs better design. Crowdfunding is step backwards from where we were.
