Great article. It sums up pretty much every thought I've had as an avid SC2 spectator over the last 8-10 months. There's nothing more annoying than going into a match (as a spectator) thinking "Well, unless player A plays 100% perfect or Player B just forfeits the game (literally or figuratively), we already know the outcome." Everything in this article leads into that line of thinking for spectators, and sadly it is proven true much more often than not.

this doesn't invalidate anything he wrote, nor am i implying anything by this!!!!!

For the people who are saying it's just whine and strongly opinionated (which doesn't really say anything at all since his opinion could be correct), point out where it's factually incorrect with your own data and observations.

Am I the only one who thinks that the only reason TvP was balanced at the end of wings/early HotS era is because terran had all those early game aggressions to choose from? Back then it was pretty difficult for protoss to predict what aggression terran was going for and defend it, leading the late game to be favored against terran and allow terran to win the match if the aggression did enough damage. Even back in WoL, especially after that EMP nerf, TvP late game was probably unwinnable for terran if they were equal in terms of skill, supply, upgrade, tech and unit composition.

Now that they took away lots of early game offensive capability from terran, the match up shifts to protoss's favour just because now early-mid game is fairly even for both races, but late game tends to favor protoss more. Before this early-mid game was terran favored, while late game was protoss favored so it kinda balanced out.

I still wish blizzard could balance this game such that TvP would be balanced throughout. Back in BW early game favored protoss slightly due to bio being weak vs protoss (that still didn't stop some players from going early rax cheese/aggressions), mid game would be slightly favored to terran as they finally have their mech tech and protoss probably haven't gotten the top tier units yet; and late game would be even and will depend heavily on micro and decision making.

Regarding TL's policy on balance whining: ”Balance whining” isn't two absolutes – whining or not whining. There is more to balance discussions than just whining. You do not have to approve of the tone of the article, but equating a sweeping statement along the lines of ”Toss is shit race, sOs no skill only cannon rushes” to a 40-page essay detailing the difficulties of handling the Protoss race as Terran again only makes you look stupid. Yet again a case of "not unreasonable points, badly presented"; seems to happen a lot on these forums of late. People have been arguing about how Terran needs a buff for months now and I don't think many can disagree now, its finally pretty convincing. Whether you get your information from watching or from playing (personally I've found playing random and race switching around has been very helpful on this) its pretty clear there needs to be some tweaks.

However this editorial is unnecessarily confrontational and is, to be blunt, insulting in many places. People get on board extremely easily with the "them and us" mentality; which means you create an unbelievably toxic environment with sides and everyone screaming at each other and yelling abuse. Just look at the state this thread has devolved into.

Frankly I find this whole thing the exact opposite of constructive. You're never going to get anywhere when your strategy for garnering support for your position boils down to shouting "you're only doing well because your race is OP, my race is way harder so I'm a better player" at everyone else. Especially when you go on to lay the same accusations on their favourite pro players. Because like it or not, that's the ultimate outcome of these discussions. There is zero attempt to be constructive or to appeal for support; its merely creating sides by using language that people will instinctively react extremely badly to.


You can quote all of the stats and numbers that you like. But ultimately how they're presented DOES matter. And the way this is presented is not going to change anyone's mind; instead its merely going to incite more hatred.

If OP had posted something less extreme, it would have been ignored.

He had to pile hundreds of facts upon each other in order for protosses to concede that they might actually have an advantage or two. It worked.

I would love to see evidence proving that Terran is OP since it seems some people believe "any race can be proven to be OP". For bonus points, don't use Taeja games.

A strongly opinionated article and i respect the author for that. It must have taken a ton of work to put everything together and is written well enough to make for a pleasant read. It will take a few days to fully digest it all.

Over all, i have found it to resonate with me, and the feelings i've head for SC2 for some time. Frustration, coin flip wins and loses, poor balance on the Terran side and broken promises of game play variety, mech TvP.

I like a lot of the points of the article. Only major thing I disagree with was the dismissal of Hellbat drops. That was terrible to spectate and I hope w/e buffs Terrans badly need comes in other areas.

It wasn't dismissed. The article implies that it could have been handled differently if the Hellbat nerf was just meant for TvT.

I'd agree terran's the hardest race to win tournaments with at the moment but god bloody dammit you used a lot more words then I think was necessary.
