This + there were micro/macro maps where the micro and macro was split. I think its a good fun map playing with some friends but i doubt that would lead to better pro gaming matches (it was good in BW though for training reasons because BW is mechanically demanding).

Boxer used to practice like this when he was in his prime/upswing, because his team didn't have zergs at that time. So the players of other races played vs him 2v1 team melee like that, to help him train for matches.
He said after practicing like that, the zerg people he played 1v1 in the tournaments seemed slow and bad, and he was thinking like "now he will do this and this" and was delighted to see they weren't doing it because they couldn't handle it, so he'd win easily. They were always at least a step behind him. Then he won a bunch of tournaments.
I think it's even mentioned in his auto-biographical book (the translation is called "Crazy like me" and is still available somewhere, and the link is posted several times in topics on TL). It's very interesting and fun read, it might interest some of the SC2 people to see how legends are born and grown, to get in the head of some of the champions (for any game, because I think that mindset is shared by most of them, so seeing one described in detail from the inside is a great experience).

You can even do this on ladder, just hand over control to your team mate and you can both control each others armies.
I don't think many top 2v2 players actually do this though, as it adds another level of mechanics that needs to be practised for little benefit.

The easy solution is to just remove the artificial limitation from the game and let the players manage the roles themselves. This would also add another level of teamwork and communication that would put better teams above better pairs of individual players.
Shoot, you could even increase it from just 2 players. Start putting 3 or 4 or 6 players on each side and watch what they can do. Simultaneous attacks and multiple blink armies and all kinds of fun stuff.

Couldn't you just... play 2v2 and give each other control? Or better yet, just play straight 2v2/3v3/4v4?

The thing with 2v2 shared control is not sharing resource pool.

Yeah i use to do that a lot in AoE2 with my teamates back in the day. I was the less skilled player so i was in charge of building farms. A LOT of farms.
