Hi. I really enjoy SC2 when I see awesome micro happening. I think if there was a ladder and scene where the rules are that multiple players control one army (ex. TvP, but 3v3 or 2v2), then I think we'll see way more insane micro happening.

By having just one player dedicate to macro, the other player(s) can specialize in micro. I think this will make playing the game more fun, because macroing is not as fun to do as microing. If you specialize in one thing, you'll be better at it than if you had to balance your time between micro and macro. It'll be more fun for casuals. Also, when spectating, we'd almost always see army(s) moving around and doing something.

Do you like this idea?

There are micro/macro maps in the arcade where one player macros and the other player micros although at the pro level players dont need to sacrifice micro for macro too often.

Yeah, these maps even existed back in BW. Professionals can handle both though, so I don't think such a team game needs to exist in professional tournaments though.

there was a mode called team-melee in broodwar which is basically what you're describing, except both players have the ability to both macro and micro

i think this could be extremely interesting to play. I dont think it would be THAT more interesting to watch because there is allready so much goin on in a game that sometimes casters can t even keep up with what 1 player on each side is doing

As said above me, this existed in BW. Some pro koreans we're practing 1v2 (2 players controlling the zerg) to simulate how it is to play against Jaedong.

Doesn't this already exist in arcade/custom or some such?

I'm not sure. Maybe it's a good idea if you have some friends to play with. But in case you get paired up with a bunch of strangers, those games become will be like random team games or public games in pretty much any MOBA out there, and in this case probably even worse - Someone doesn't cooperate and his teammates won't have fun. (Imagine if the macro guy does a canon rush and doesn't give any control to his teammates.)

I think watching high level games wouldn't be as different. Progamers are already pretty decent at multitasking. For example if you have a person just focussing on doing a drop, that person can make the most of it. So that will probably just increase the overall level of play, but not really change the game as it is.

Besides that, for me personally the difficulty of multitasking has always been part of the fun. I just like to have the maximum control over my games. I like being the single person responsible for losing and not being able to call someone else a n00b.

However, I don't want to spoil this for you, it's just my two cents. Good luck, have fun.

It might be funsy for some showmatch (much better than adds between games at the end of tournament ihmo).

In BW we had a lot of 2V3 between progamers and "fans". Maybe some 1v1, but one team having 2-3 players to compensate might be fun to watch, at least in a "bronze league hero" format.

Except you actually play worse because it doesn't flow as well. For example, a zerg will control-click eggs when they make units to add it to their control group, or protosses can box units when they warp in to add to their control group. In Micro/macro maps you can't do that because somebody else is producing for you, and it slows you down a lot. Also other things like putting down pylons when a protoss wants to get aggressive, it's just easier to do it yourself than to communicate where you want it to be placed

Well darn, those BW maps didn't take off. And if you wanted to go to the extreme, you'd play a MOBA anyhow.

Wait are people here actually claiming that having two players controlling one side is worse or equal to a single player? Or that pro's don't sacrifice micro or macro attention? Are we watching the same game?

In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

BW's "team melee" allowed for this. It was amazing. For 1v1, it allowed for >200 food with multiple races.

IMO the biggest advantage Koreans possess is to control their army very well the entire game, obviously this isn't just micro but thinking about where to move, pay attention to what threats are being posed against their army being out on the map, react quickly to an assault, micro the army around while powering up, ect. In a multi-user control game a lot of these advantages would be less important. Also for anyone who believes it would make little difference you need to consider that other changes can be made to support this type of play such as skill shots, combat abilities like blink, more units that benefit greatly from their positioning and kiting, heroes, and the list goes on. Commitment to this game style could give an RTS the level of excitement of a MOBA game while still requiring the crazy mechanical play and decision making of an RTS.

Man, imagine a round of this in a team league? MMA on micro with Innovation on macro. Parting on micro with Rain on macro. Maru on micro with SoS on macro. Fantasy on micro with...literally anyone on macro (someone help this man). MKP on micro and Byun also on micro, doing nothing but cheese builds. If we're talking Brood War then you could have Flash play Jaedong and give each of them two computers.

Seriously, you could have some awesome games.

TvT (T)Bomber (macro) & (T)MarineKingPrime (micro) vs (T)Flash (macro) & (T)TY (micro)

Lots of practice games so they are coherent in the games concept and comfortable doing it rather than awkward and off balance

I wish the arcade mod worked better. Pulling workers for instance is very tricky when you have to manually change them from macro to micro - this is particularly difficult for SCVs that are harassed while building.

This + there were micro/macro maps where the micro and macro was split.
I think its a good fun map playing with some friends but i doubt that would lead to better pro gaming matches (it was good in BW though for training reasons because BW is mechanically demanding).

Boxer used to practice like this when he was in his prime/upswing, because his team didn't have zergs at that time. So the players of other races played vs him 2v1 team melee like that, to help him train for matches.

He said after practicing like that, the zerg people he played 1v1 in the tournaments seemed slow and bad, and he was thinking like "now he will do this and this" and was delighted to see they weren't doing it because they couldn't handle it, so he'd win easily. They were always at least a step behind him. Then he won a bunch of tournaments.

I think it's even mentioned in his auto-biographical book (the translation is called "Crazy like me" and is still available somewhere, and the link is posted several times in topics on TL). It's very interesting and fun read, it might interest some of the SC2 people to see how legends are born and grown, to get in the head of some of the champions (for any game, because I think that mindset is shared by most of them, so seeing one described in detail from the inside is a great experience).

You can even do this on ladder, just hand over control to your team mate and you can both control each others armies.

I don't think many top 2v2 players actually do this though, as it adds another level of mechanics that needs to be practised for little benefit.

The easy solution is to just remove the artificial limitation from the game and let the players manage the roles themselves. This would also add another level of teamwork and communication that would put better teams above better pairs of individual players.

Shoot, you could even increase it from just 2 players. Start putting 3 or 4 or 6 players on each side and watch what they can do. Simultaneous attacks and multiple blink armies and all kinds of fun stuff.

Couldn't you just... play 2v2 and give each other control? Or better yet, just play straight 2v2/3v3/4v4?

The thing with 2v2 shared control is not sharing resource pool.
