Golden just confirmed that Sound have indeed retired from professional SC2 on his stream.
Personally I find it a bit strange, considering he did get alot of exposure at the Red Bull training grounds back in July where he placed 2nd, loosing 2-4 to Golden in the finals.
Best of luck in the future to Sound!
Edit; I asked Golden if he could say anything about why Sound retired, School? Work? Lost motivation? Military? Kicked from the team? He replied "I don't know because I were home when he retired"
I'm guessing he's got some personal things going on in his life? His results were just starting to pick up so it's kinda weird that he retired like this right when he was making money :/
Feeling sad, but best of luck to Sound in whatever he does from now on !
I remember his good run that surprised most people at HSC4 (even though the finals was a stomp, but MC was a bit scarier back then) Made me a fan back then !
This is really sad I saw his twitter and he didn't post something for over a month. I hope we can get some statement or something about what he wants to do?
There was some talk that he wanted to go back to school, so I'm not surprised. But it's a shame, I really liked him and thought he had the potential to become really good.
Most logical would be that he would go to school. He is too young to join the military service. And looking at the date he stopped posting stuff on his twitter makes it look really obvious that he wants to return to studies.
And why I use this as an arguement is that most pro gamers who got a team related twitter account stop posting on there after either leaving or retiring. In this case retirement
That's too bad. I hoped for him to get more good results after the HSC he participated in but was always disappointed when he hadn't qualified for this or that event.

too young for military service? he is 19, that's like the perfect age in korean culture to go.

I thought you had to be minimal 20 to join the military?
That's sad, I liked Sound. He was one of the quiet ST guys that I really thought had a lot of potential. He showed up in teamleagues especially. I hope we get a reason at some point, but until then I wish him the best of times .
Doubt it's due to performance reasons; he had just qualified for WCS AM Challenger League a while ago and was almost a lock to get into Premiere League for S3 based on what I saw out of him in GSTL, but then suddenly forfeited his spot without playing any games and now this... Sounds like a personal/family issue of some sort.

Whatever the case, best of luck to him. Will miss seeing his solid Terran play. ;(
Sad.
Even though he placed 2nd couple times it is really valid reason to quit professional gaming. These games takes so much free time of their life and if you can't make money from it, well some might find it useless :/
Especially if something happen in his family so naturally he don't want to spend tens of hours playing video game.
I knew him at the MLG when he made a fabulous run to the Round 10 of the LB, showing an impressive level. Seemed to be a funny little guy with his glasses and his hat on backwards. He became one of my favorite Terran since this event.

Think you right. He forfeited the bracket stage of WCS America Chalenger league one month ago due to personnal reasons, but he seemed to have been drafted for the group stage. He had to play wednesday.
The top line of the op is confusing at the moment. Should obviously be that Golden confirmed on his stream that Sound is retiring. Change "he" to "Sound" please, at the moment the sentance is saying that Golden is retiring.

This is kind of a shocker considering how well he was doing for startale at the beginning of the expansion... sorry to see a great player like Sound go

In my defense.. The text were changed by Waxangel(I guess) since my English is pretty bad. I had written Sound there, but I guess he changed it to the better
Never heard of him. Maybe I'm just deaf to team leagues. :\
Hopefully the family issue isn't too bad, sucks to have your life derailed because of family health emergency or financial issues - but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Home Story Cup is not a team league though. :S
EDIT: Actually it looks like the OP didn't even include that result... what a shame. Almost as much of a shame as people forgetting about Sound. :/

Family issues probably went like this.
Parents - You should quit pro gaming, you're not really earning enough to make it worth it.
Sound - But, I'm in WCS AM challenger at the moment with a chance to go to premier!
Parents - Career earnings - $5,750
Sound - Ok mom and dad, you're right.
It hurts how narrow-minded posts like these are...
You're right, in Korea it's actually a lot worse. More along the lines of "I will disown you and/or beat you upon sight if you return home" happened to two people in the ProS house, so they never went home. One is currently in the army, the other sleeps around friends homes avoiding going home as he never became a pro-gamer. You have no idea how badly parents view pro-gamers who are not big before telling their parents. As usually kids keep it a secret until they do something big and/or get invited to a pro-team. Those who tell their parents they're doing it before hand usually are under strict time-limits or face serious neglect.

I see where you're coming from but I don't see how that relates to Sound who is (or was, I guess) on one of the bigger and more stable Korean pro teams, in Star Tale. Not to mention he's had better results than most Kespa and eSF B-teamers.
So yeah it's a bit presumptuous to claim that's what "family issues" means in this case.

How is that narrow minded? That seems like a logical family conversation, family can put huge pressure on each other.
Because, like I pointed out, Sound is one of the more successful B-teamers across both eSF and Kespa in terms of tangible results. He's proven himself multiple times to be a talented player, and with Red Bull looking to get more involved in SC2, that would only brighten his prospects.
Besides, if he really wasn't earning enough from SC2, he could just own online tournaments like other Korean players did before their eventual breakout/resurgence (see: HyuN, Revival, San, Creator etc)
He doesn't earn enough money to make a reasonable living is my guess, considering most Korean teams don't play salary. and he probably had to take care of his parents to which happens a lot in Korea, and I guess he wasn't able to that while being a SC2 player.

To be fair this season it was kind of embarrassing if you didn't all-kill NSH. I was wondering why his name was scored through in the WCS AM Challenger League groups (looked everywhere and couldn't find any info). Guess this explains it.

Axiom-Acer and Prime confirmed worst teams evah :D Also, groups are auto-formed should you lose in bracket stage, so since Sound forfeit it there, he was auto-placed in group. Like Idra.

thats not what he was saying though, you seemed to be the narrow minded one, he was just talking about family. Its hard to be doing something that you love when the people you love tell you not to. Maybe his parents just felt that he needed to continue education, i would say its the right time for it considering the summer is ending. (Idk if korean schools are the same time as ours)
It just seems like he made a valid point saying that his parents might have put pressure on him.

You're right, that is a valid point.
However going "durr he only won $6k no wonder he retired" is an absurdly stupid claim. And I have reason to believe it's the latter.

I believe I heard some time ago that StarTale only payed two people salaries Bomber, and July at the time... The korean scene most of the time does not pay their players salaries so it's understandable that they can't help and support their parents.

Surely that was before the Red Bull sponsorship and Life going ham on everybody. Speaking of Red Bull, they've done Star Tale quite a bit of good, having their heavy-hitters (Bomber, PartinG and at the time Squirtle) at their battle grounds event and Sound and Golden at the training grounds.

This comment is crazy. There are literally hundreds of pro SC2 players, about 5x as many as the scene can actually support. We don't need more players to support the scene, we need a bigger scene to support the players. And if the scene stays at this size, we need to lose players to keep it sustainable.

I think we need an amateur/mid tier scene to keep this kind of players especially in SK.
