(Edit) Figured after hitting Masters I would add a little something here, Thanks for everyones support, practicing these few weeks since I starting to stream I really improved a lot.

Well I finally worked up the nerve again to put myself out there again to the community. It took me awhile to get over my ladder anxiety. If I could get a push of motivation and encouragement from you guys I would be happy to stream more

Anyway I figured I would start streaming and share this with the community,

Please don't flame saying why would you ever handicap yourself like that or any other hateful things >,< always scared me away in the past, and I've been playing sc2 for three years since release like this, its a comfortable and relaxing way to play, if I stream I think it might be something the community might really enjoy, lemme know what you guys think.

http://www.twitch.tv/sc2cress#

Blizzard also contacted me recently about playing star craft 2 with the game pad. I think they concluded that playing star craft 2 with the game pad is really difficult without a lot of practice so you guys are safe against a console port. I think =D

If you want me to keep streaming, Please lemme know by leaving comments below Thanks again TL community

Thanks to those that have been watching my stream and supporting me.

I created a twitter page to try and get my name out there more and will try to stream more for you guys: https://twitter.com/Sc2Cress

It's really impressive to see how well you play with it, wow. How well can you play with a keyboard if you have to? I'm assuming you've at least tried it?

I imagine for 2v2s if one player just used the gamepad for micro you could probably make a fight for it being even better.

Well that looks pretty damn smooth compared to my memories of me playing Red Alert on Playstation...

Although I can't appreciate you giving Blizzard funny ideas, we already have the tools at Bungie thinking consoles are the promised land of FPS games, don't take RTS away from us.

That's really cool actually.

Would you mind sharing how you set it up and whether or not you used any additional programs and if yes which ones to set up the Controller? Maybe share good settings so the Cursor Movement feels smooth, stuff like that?

I could really use these instructions for my upcoming custom map, because using a 360 controller would fit very well for it and would potentially be viable for the average gamer without a lot of practice (It will be a Top-Down Shooter). Maybe other people are interested in it too, so I figured I'll ask here in public.

You are actually amazingly skilled with a controller. You do a lot of things that involve cursor movement only fractionally slower than I do, and without a doubt more accurately.

If you somehow got a console port of SCII that adds legions of 12 year olds to ladder though I'll be rather disappointed(provided it's joint ladder, otherwise it could be alright)

Oh damn, I'm impressed

I like how you have to accomodate with the constraints of your controller. Like, basically, you have to hotkey everything. I am even sure you have to sim city in a specific way (forge next to robo, so you can chrono them easily when you hit the robo hotkey)

I just don't understand how he can bind all those hotkey with a xbox controller... You have like 16 buttons ? Is that even enough ? I mean, you have the 2 mouse buttons the shift the ctrl and the control (numeric hotkey) doesn't that already take all the controller's button ?
Mad props >_<

What the fuck am I watching?

Dude, if you're comfortable with the controller, and you don't mind the handicap, more power to you. Legit, I don't see you making that many mistakes in your play. I'm listening to you talk and you've got a good grasp of the game too. Now I'm seriously wanting to try this.

P.S: I'm kinda naive to posting a lot on team liquid so I hope a rant of this nature is okay with the mods, Thanks again TL community

Ha doesn't even seem like there are enough buttons.

Though really props to you for figuring it out, and excelling at it. Find it really funny that even Blizz is puzzled as to how to you rigged that up.

this could be perfect for some casual sc2 on consoles, naturally you are not as fast or precise with the movements than with mouse/keyboard - but mad props to you as your game overall looked really smooth and actually enjoyable

And as long as Blizzard does not change a thing ("dumb it down") for PC they can go nuts with console ports. I think playing the campaign on consoles this way could be much fun!

Edit: Can he get a feature? Definitely feels like he is doing something that many other people would be interested in watching.

Command and Conquer, Red Alert, Dune, etc. Yeah, playing RTS with a game controller isn't really revolutionary.

But this guy is playing Starcraft II. A PC/Mac-exclusive title. Using an incompatible controller. Hitting Masters. Playing macro games. While streaming. THAT'S NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE!

Hes obviously using a program such as Xpadder to bind keyboard + mouse actions to the gamepad.

Using the Ctrl + (hotkey) would double the hotkeys available. You can also hotkey D pad's arrows aswell so don't forget that aswell guys. He should be able to use around 32 hotkeys via hes gamepad.

Ive done this alot of times with MMORPG's without pad support. Its hard to use your analog stick as a mouse so mad props to OP for mastering it.

I noticed this too. It's one of the smoothest user-based stream I've seen; his SC2 settings look very peculiar as well.

Everything is too... different. It's like he's on another plane of existence within our dimension. Hope that made sense.

Maybe has something to do with his console's experience when you need like way more FPS while playing a fighter game than sc2 and the likes.
He probably has a lot of Upload, that's for sure. But he's not the only one to have a really smooth's one

And weird..
I'm really curious as to how you're able to make this work.
Like controller layout, how do you make that work? What buttons do what? How did you make/optimize this setup?
I know some friends who would probably be really interested in this.

I dunno how I would post my xpadder setup? its definently not the most effective way to set up a xbox360 controller to play star craft 2, but its what I've gotten used too, I could think of a few other setups that are less stressful on your hands, anyway, Maybe when I stream tomarrow I could pick someone from the chat who has guy and send the guy my xpadder file over that? and he could try it out?

Again, thanks everyone who promoted me today, Definently motivated to stream for you guys in the future.

TL community you guys Rock, Thanks again <3

I'm running a i7 3930k with 60 fps at 720p, I don't take any performance drop from the 60 fps, so I figure why not, and everyone said that, its one of the smoothest streams they've seen, so if your computer can handle it, its worth it to run the 60 fps instead of the 30 fps, I'm also running 2 mb upload

That is literally only a matter of getting used to it, I played console fps for about 8 years and a lot of pc fps as well and I don't really notice a difference in aim when switching between the two, the hole fps only works with m/k is just a myth created by fps pc players who tried to use controller a few times and failed, it literally takes years to get good with a controller. Also the hole "but console fps have aim assist" thing is bs as well, there h ave been console fps like halo 1 or shadowrun with no aim assist and people were able to achieve perfect aim in those as well, only modern titles like cod or battlefield use lots of aim assist.

While I have played some rts on consoles before, and especially halo wars did an amazing job with the controller layout, what you do with your stream is amazing. I watched it for a bit and if it wasn't for the cam in the corner showing you using the controller, I wouldn't have noticed much of a difference from a regular mouse/keyboard player. I played some rpgs on the pc that don't support controller using one and using the analog stick as a mouse is hard as fuck, so mad propes to you for hitting such a high level in a game like star 2 using it, definitely one of my favorite streams to watch now!

Also if you want to you can just sent me your xpadder file and I can write down in this thread how you mapped it out.

Yes, I think it very much depends on the game - I would say that playing a fast, movement based shooter like UT or Quake would be much more difficult with the Gamepad - not saying it's impossible, but it's definitely more difficult.

I never would've thought you could play an RTS like SC2 with a controller :D That looks pretty amazing.
Why did you start playing with a controller? Just to see if you can do it or because you just like controllers so much?

I started just using the controller for browsing my pc like to listen to music and such, and maybe a bit of playing a console game here and there. I started playing world of warcraft with the xbox360 controller, which was simple enough. Then I bought the Sc2 collectors edition just so I could get the thor pet.

I started to play custom games in Wings and such. I started watching day9's broadcasts and getting to know basic build orders I played terran back then. I had really bad ladder anxiety at least 1v1 for awhile tho, Took me awhile to shake it, I beat a diamond player in a 1v1 once, This was before master league, I thought "hey maybe I can do this" I kept working at it, For 3 years, seems like every year I broke through a plateau and got better.

A lot of people helped me grow as a player along the way and get me to the point I am now.

Right now I'm sitting at a high diamond low masters level. Maybe if I keep working at it I can get even higher who knows, I've come this far. The feed back of the TL is extremely encouraging. So I'm gonna keep at it, and stream for you guys.

That's basically the short version of how I came to play on the game pad. I like where I'm at right now, I'm not the fastest but I have precise mouse movement and good macro

After watching your stream I'm really impressed by how well you are able to use that controller. That is so cool. I don't even know what to say, but choosing P was the right decision.

Also I wonder if this would ever work as zerg, My first thougt is the macro is too much "screenjumping" for an xboxcontroller,

Ive done this alot of times with MMORPG's without pad support. Its hard to use your analog stick as a mouse so mad props to OP for mastering it.

Looks cool, I can remember myself playing C&C/Red Alert on PSX without any problems so Im not that surprised someone is playing RTS with a controller. Ofc to play it @ such a highlvl is a impressive feat, but playing rts with controller aint as bad as one might think.

All of these games include strafe jumping which is obviously impossible to do with a gamepad...
But even if I'd play any of those games in a shitty console port against rapha I'd probably kill him just based off of him sucking with a gamepad. I don't say if console and pc players would play a quake esk game against each other the console guy would stand much of a chance (though in the case of shadowrun pc and console players could play with each other and I never felt like either had an advantage, BUT shadowrun was made with console controlls in mind, no quake like game is and due to strafejumping being impossible with a gamepad it never will). Arena FPS is a very special topic and I could talk to you for about 2 hours how Bungie tried to make it work on a console and what things they changed to do so, but obviously you can't just take a game that is build with using a keyboard and a mouse in mind and tell me I should kill a progamer in it using a gamepad...

PC FPS and console FPS are completely different genres. It's so cute when CoD players talk about 1.6 players like we're playing the same genre.

*EDIT* In order to not derail the thread, awesome job man, I'm blown away. Especially as a keyboard/mouse elitist...

Despite the obvious resistance in this thread, I welcome the idea of a decent SC2 port. Anything that increases the playerbase will increase the viewship, injecting more money and viewers into our beloved esport. As much as some of us might hate it, legions of xbox kiddies would be *great* for Starcraft.

Understandable resistance. I would imagine you would need to keep ladders seperate, ie PC has its own and xBox does as well, if memory serves Microsoft tried combining with an FPS or two and it didn't go too well all things considered. Could be fun to see.

Im wondering if you have to resign functionality? It seems like you dont have to click on a lot of things though. Do you have a lot of not assigned functions then??

I think its possible to aim and click on stuff. I can play fps quite well on a controller. but for starcraft 2 i just need more buttons for production and groups. Im not sure how you can handle 5 groups efficiently and have buttons left for production...
I play grid so i need at least 5 buttons for groups, 9 for production, 3 for ctrl, shift and tab and 2 for left and right click. and 4 buttons for region hotkeys. Thats like the minimum functionality i need.

My ps3 controller has 14 buttons. I did the math and its not working... :D

The sad part is that this guy plays better with an xbox controller then some people with a mouse and keyboard.

Keep up the good work man. I just hope SC doesn't turn into Halo and become a console exclusive.

Hey, everyone, Cress is a good buddy of mine and we've been gaming it up for over a year. It's really great that he's receiving such tremendous support from the TL community. His playstyle is definitely unique, utilizing an X-Box 360 Controller over a mouse and keyboard, and he has persisted with this style despite the adversity he sometimes received from other gamers. It's good to see such positivity and acceptance, 'cause it's definitely not a gimmick. He literally does everything except type with the controller, haha. Anyway, I hope you all become regular viewers of his stream, and I hope to see you all there!

Aldrexus Messaged me on reddit and on my twitch tv account, took me a month to notice the messages XD. He sent me another message this morning still wanting to know more about my experience with the xbox 360 controller. I don't wanna share every message he sends me but the community wants to know I suppose .

It seems they really might be interested in a console port or getting as many ideas from me as possible. I know thats a scary thought for a lot of sc2 players. Still really cool none the less.

No worries, Cress. Thanks for getting in touch. I'd love to hear as many details as you're willing to share regarding your setup. Also, given your success on the ladder, we're really interested in hearing more about how you're liking the experience, why you choose to use a controller, and any other feedback you might have based upon your somewhat unique experience.

If you'd prefer to take this conversation off of Reddit, feel free to email me directly at ***************@blizzard.com.

I have a keyboard in front of my monitor, but I don't have a desk in front of me, just an entertainment center, so my pc is kinda setup like a console =). While ingame I would need to take my hands off the xbox360 controller in order to type though.

Theres no really good way for me to post my setup for my xpadder, but I could draw something up roughly and edit my main post if you guys want?

Yes Thorlord I have been doing this since sc2 release listening to them day9 video's practicing my game pad macro

i DEFINETELY think this is AMAZING.

This is why i'm fascinated with gaming bros, seriously, this dude just took the hardest RTS on the market that most people take aaaaaaaaaaaaaaages to master with a fucking MOUSE & KEYBOARD and figured out how to play it on a 14 button joystick hahahahaa.

You should actually take that advice from tuho12345, ask for a job if you dont work with anything yet, because what you just did, blizzard is prolly trying to achieve to make their game more acessible for quite some time now, imagine if they could sell sc2 for xbox?! they'd be swimming in money right now, and YOU ARE THE KEY to it, so don't sell yourself cheap for a ego massage, go hard :DDDD

Best of luck and amazing job bro, proud of you.

Wow, definitely cool to see Blizzard so interested and especially involved with the community .

I would definitely not mind a console port of SC2 if they manage to get it to work.

Though it really depends on how hard it is to get learn to play SC2 on a controller.

SC2's biggest issue is getting into the game. Definitely would be a lot harder if it's on a controller (is it intuitive enough?).

Though I say the single player is a solid campaign of any RTS game. If SC2 were released on consoles, they should bundle the base game + 2 expansion packs for $60 or something.

Campaign being at least 5-7 hours of campaign for WoL (10+ hours if you try to get all achievements), and hopefully at least the same for HotS and LotV, that's at least 15+ to 30 hours for SP campaign (which is a solid deal for any console game; I mean I know some people buy the CoD games just for the 10~ hour singleplayer instead of multiplayer). Again, assuming they bundle WoL + HotS + LotV (when it comes out) for if they do a console port that is.

Anyway, glad to hear you've been contacted by Blizzard . It's nice to see Blizzard really enthusiastic about this .

Doing good for using a controller, not amazed it's possible to get to a certain level....though I would wonder 'if' you'd improve past your current station using a mouse and keyboard. Not saying you would or should, just would be interesting to see if maybe there are a handful of people out there so used to consoles and console games that they play better with the controller vs mouse and keyboard.

Full ack. It has been discussed and (iirc) proven that playing with Mouse/Keyboard simply gives you more accuracy/speed and an edge over a gamepad. I remember back in the day that when UT2003 or UT2004 was about to get a console port they tried to merge Multiplayer for console and PC - and they scrapped the idea because it was not even close when looking at the results.

But that's just for the competitive component - emphasizing fun and comfort I am sure that playing with a gamepad (more so infront of a TV set and on the couch) is the clear winner. And I guess in that sense a Console port makes a lot of sense as the player base is huge and the more SC gamers the merrier.

@Goldfish, Well I know they were interested in making a console port for diablo 3 they even talked about it a couple of times but the mouse controls were always a concern for them. So I guess seeing me play star craft 2 is interesting to them as well. I dunno how star craft 2 would do if they ported it over to consoles and had a console only ladder and story mode.

Theres a couple of ideas I have actually that might help the ease of use of mouse controls for beginner players though, Don't wanna write an essay about it here tho.

I bet if they added like 15+ hours to story mode that was console exclusive theres a lot of people that really only played sc2 for the story mode and if the ladder was at least functional. Blizzard maybe pull the trigger on something like that if they could get it to work

Quite impressive xD

There are a lot of console excusive games Id play if I could use a mouse and keyboard instead of a controller. IMO how you interact with a game should be up to the gamer. Congrats to this dude.

@Chaggi It works to this level because I've been playing sc2 for 3 years. Releasing a console port over to consoles with my control setup would be a bad idea. However theres a lot of things you could change for ease of use for the user. Some of them they have already put in the pc version, Auto-mine in the start of the match is an example of giving beginner players using the game pad a better experence. Even that's not enough you need a complete redesign of how the mouse would handle for the console port.

I can't see a cross-platform ladder. But if they were separate, this guy would be console GM for sure.

Really enjoyed watching you play yesterday, keep up the good work!

I only checked out a couple of the streams, and I can't really see much of how you're using the controller. With the side-on view it just looks like a video of someone playing a regular game stuck next to a standard SC2 stream. Are there videos where you show more of a top-down angle so we can see how you are hitting the buttons? I would be really interested to see exactly how you're controlling, and I'm sure I'm not the only one

I only checked out a couple of the streams, and I can't really see much of how you're using the controller. Are there videos where you show more of a top-down angle so we can see how you are hitting the buttons? I would be really interested to see exactly how you're controlling, and I'm sure I'm not the only one

Yeah I'd be really interested to see how he binds his controls as well. It'd be cool if he went into some details on how he plays.

A lot of speedrunners have apps on their stream that displays the exact controller inputs on screen. For example http://www.twitch.tv/siglemic/c/1929467

I actually bought and downloaded the program he uses, xpadder.

It's a neat little program with which you can assign pretty much the entire keyboard to the controller. The limited number of buttons can be circumvented by using additional sets of button layouts that can be activated by holding down or tapping an assigned button.

Emulating the full sc2 control scheme on a gamepad is tricky, but definitely doable.

If anything I'm super amazed that you managed to play the way you do with a controller. I never realised that sort of play was even possible with a controller o_O, well you've sure shown one person how wrong he is. I haven't been able to check your stream, but I skipped through some of your vods and just by looking you wouldn't even be able to tell you wasn't using a mouse. Your movements are so fluid!

I can't see a cross-platform ladder. But if they were separate, this guy would be console GM for sure.

Really enjoyed watching you play yesterday, keep up the good work!

Yeah, apparently one RTS had cross-platform ladder and it ended terribly for the console players. I doubt that Blizzard would make that mistake.

Yeah if blizzard did make a console version they would probably have a console only ladder and would have to perfect the controls to where you could play a decent game.

Indeed, this would be awesome. Make it happen!

This takes me back to when I saw some dude beat Tekken (or some other fighting game) at the hardest difficulty with that fishing rod controller. I could barely do with a regular PSX controller.

Cress, this is really impressive! I can't believe you've been under the radar for this long to be honest, this is a pretty cool accomplishment and your mechanics are solid.

You ought to accept challenges from people while you stream. It would be pretty cool to test oneself against the Xbox Controller guy :D

Edit: This thread should be spotlighted!

@Romitelli That's very true, I will add an area with xpadder displayed, With xpadder displayed it would be impossible to be denied that I was playing on the xbox360 controller. I might just replace to web cam with the xpadder display, or do you guys think I should have both xpadder and the web cam?

I won't be able to stream very much this weekend, I'll try to make as many improvements to the stream as possible though in till Monday. Might be able to pull something off on Saturday for a few hours dunno yet. Spread the word around that I'm streaming again ^-^

@Hackbenjamin, Yeah I will accept 1v1 challenges from those wanting to play with me. I'm also looking for 1v1 master level practice partners my hots play needs a lot of work.

Also in regards to what my key setup is. I'll write something up later, I'm also going to start streaming with xpadder displayed. So you can see what buttons are being pushed.

Your cursor precision is leaving me with my jaw on the floor. I'm assuming it's partly because you have the cursor speed set pretty low, but it also looks like you're just crazy good with a joystick. Props to you man.

@Cylluus Yeah, I like to keep the cursor speed low to keep it controllable. Its accurate though and with the direction keys bound to an analog stick. You can move the mouse and move the screen at the time, So that helps with moving around quickly

Funny thing is that you play like AI. Just check them playing from replays and you know what I mean. They not move like by mouse, they move screen just like Cress

@winthrop I could give the xpadder file to people over skype who watch my stream if you guys wish =D. You basically bind xpadder to use the left analog stick as the directional keys and the right analog stick as a mouse. I recommend binding the right bumber to do control groups and shift click on points on the map. I use the left analog stick, but I feel it's inefficient. I can't change it because I'm so used to it though.

A lot of the buttons you bind to the controller comes down to personal preference.

There's also way's of doubling the amount of keys we have available to us. By having a button that will change keys into other keys O.o

I've probably lost a few people by now, but honestly it just comes down to practicing that mouse control on the analog stick and practice practice you must.

What's the harm of just uploading the xpadder file somewhere and posting the link here?

I don't really see the point of this backwards method of having to contact you on skype for it. But in the end it's your choice, whatever.

I'm not very familiar with file uploading services. I figured people who really wanted help with setting it up would not mind contacting me directly and watching my stream. Playing star craft 2 on the xbox360 is not for everyone as I'm sure you know and I did not think there would be this much interest in people wanting to try it also.

Split with Zerg or Protoss? He isn't competing in the GSL...

Also Z/P players with 0-3 hotkeys was surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) common at mid master level when I used to play.

Nevertheless, pretty damn impressive... I didn't believe my friend until he showed me the stream VODs. It'd be interesting to see how far you could get with Terran.

Will have to tune in to a live broadcast sometime... still impressive lol

I use about six control groups in a normal game, dunno where 0-3 came from XD?

The reason Cress is so good is that he practices things over and over again. Each build he does he has down the the number which is really the aspect of any good player. A lot of my friends and I say that if you were to put a mouse and keyboard into Cress's hands he could make GM easy just based off his mechanics.

The fact he plays this game on an Xbox controller is just icing on the cake. But I think if you were to watch Cress it should be for how refined his play is rather than the fact it is on a gamepad.

You're seriously underselling the hours of hard work, dedication, and talent required to become a pro-gamer.

Seriously don't be insulting.

I don't think he was trying to be insulting. Professional players put a lot of effort and work into becoming better at this game. I've put 8 months of work into my xpadder config and another 3 and a half years into playing star craft 2 with it, Thousands and Thousands of hours. Both are impressive and both are legitimate.

Underselling anyones hard work in this game is probably the wrong way to look at the game. Should probably not disregard either. Even bronze players work pretty hard to be bronze =D.

On a side note I've been improving really fast. Been playing against mid and even high masters players and winning. Grinding the ladder while streaming for 6-8 hours helps a lot. Wish the ladders were not locked. Having the title Masters player with the xbox360 controller has a nice ring to it =D.

Thanks so much for all the support you guys have been giving <3

Don't fret over it too much. Getting better at this game is really just a matter of putting the time in. What input you use or what strategy you use or how much talent you have is really secondary to putting the dedication and hours in.

Been watching Cress for the past few hours now and this kind of interaction and different approach to the game was enough to get me to start watching streams again after immersing myself in the LoL scene for the past year or so. Awesome play even on a pad. Keep up the good work!!

Well, I was watching the MLG, I think total biscuit just referred to me =D. unfortunately he believes I only cheese never checked me out,

Total biscuit: "I heard about a player who plays on the xbox360 controller and hes supposedly better then me, Pretty sure he only cheeses though"

Might be surprised to see I play a lot of Macro games and am Masters.

oh well. I still <3 you TB.

I had really bad ladder anxiety for along time. Was so bad I would panic and shake as soon as I would hit the find match button XD. Glad I'm giving you confidence to get better at the game and hit the ladder =D. Your input does not really matter and neither does how fast you move. Its just a matter of putting the time into the game as minigun says =D. Everything else will fall into order.

I used to play on the top 15 for Halo Wars and I do believe that my APM was peaking high 100's and 200's on that game when the going got tough. Camera controls are just much more fluent on the controller; and I feel that you can keep doing tasks quickly without the repetitive strain you get on a keyboard. So it doesn't take me by surprise that this is possible. However you are playing Starcraft 2.

Starcraft 2.

Let that sink in for a minute. This means that you have to be "as accurate as a mouse". Literally.

Mad respect for you!

Actually that's not entirely true. You do get strained by using the game pad if you play at a certain level. although it seems to stress your hands in a different way then if you were on a keyboard and mouse. For explain I don't really get wrist pain in less I really lay into it. Depends on how much I wanna spam actions. About 220 apm for me is a happy medium not too fast that I will burn out quickly and not too slow either. My hands will hurt after an 8-10 hour session of playing star craft 2 no matter what though ^^;

Yeah I get what you mean, from my Xbox day I remember getting a lot of finger pains and pains on the tops of my hand, with SC2 it's a lot more wrist pain I get.

God, Starcraft two and guitar 'shredding' are two of my hobbies, RSI inducing if every there was a double whammy of hobbies to guarantee it

Cool stream man, impressed that you are able to exhibit this level of play with the Xbox controller
