I wonder whether the German casters TaKe and NarutO would have presented the live commentary differently, had they known it would make national television. Same with HanFy and his winner's interview. In hindsight a real shame that HasuObs -- although heavily favored -- did not win the finals, as he would have been a lot more eloquent. I hope that TaKe will indeed follow up on his intentions to e-mail the producers to paint a better picture and possibly be invited as a guest to the show to explain things better to the uninitiated audience. The live casting was so much filled with English terms that one must wonder why casting in German is needed at all. But I guess that would inadvertently have us discuss how sloppy most Germans are when it comes to improving their English, this thread being just one showcase of it. Anyways, good it actually got some airtime, even if it only was in the satire segment of the TV TOTAL show.

On September 07 2012 01:03 Prugelhugel wrote: Ok, even though I don't think Stefan Raab is that funny, here is the rough translation (starting at 4:55): ---------------------------------- + Show Spoiler + At ZDF (comment: TV station) culture I've recently seen a report about a computer game. Who plays Schtarkraft 2? *Looks at audience* *repeats question* *guy in the first row smiles and wants to raise his hand, girlfriend looks angry at him, he stops* *repeats in english* *audience is shaking heads* Ok, nobody... so we can skip this part...? Buuut, try to follow: There is a gaming show, a gaming magazin, named "for the win", where the german starkraft 2 championship is broadcastet. And the commentators are intruducing the finalists: *clip starts* *random girl is introducing TaKe* *dennis is talking about how excited he is about the finals, an occuring underdog and how lucky HasuObs was that any Korean guy wasn't able to attend the finals because his visa ran out* Yeah, bad luck if you forget to extend your visa because you are gambling that much. *Audience laughs* (comment: Probably there's this blinking light which tells them to do so) But now Hanfi is playing vs HasuObs. In Starkraft 2 it is like Dortmund vs Bayern, essientally. And the fight starts and now the tactic of HasuObs is analysed, by the commentators: *Commentating with a lot of anglicisms* *Commentator is surprised by forge before nexus* *Audience laughing confused* Ok... I'm maybe a bit old school but I would have gone Nexus first. *He proceeds to remember the commentary* Ok, we let an expert explain the tactic again. *some random clip of a stuttering, impossible to understand, guy from a german TV show starts to talk random stuff* Ok, got it? And then it comes down to crazy duels and the commentators start to be excited as hell- *Commentator starts to laugh about the dancing lings and jokes about Hasu bashing Hanfi with his keyboard if he would see it* DANCINC LINGS FROM HANFI *Clip of Joachim Löw saying: "That's nice, that's pretty nice"* I'm excited, I'm totally excited, but I just don't know why. The commentator is the Marcel Reif of the nerds, he's crazy like about the soccer world championship. And this is putten to ZDF Culture, it needs to be on ZDF main at saturday 20:15. Thus the older viewers would get something out of their TV evening. And now there is the thrilling decision. It's getting dramatic. *Clip about HasuObs blinkfailing into a loss* *Audience is laughing because they don't understand why the commentators are excited* Yeah, madness (comment: in a positive sense), isn't it? *Audience is told again to clap hands and laugh* What a final. I've seen a lot Schtarkraft 2 finals, but that's the best Schtarkraft 2 finals I've ever seen. 38 Lings on the minimap, 1400 minerals and everything full of microbugs.... I have the feeling like these people will rule the world soon. Ok, again, for beginners: You open your computer, if you have a laptop, otherwise the plate is infront of you anyways, that's the computer. Beneath it is the mouse, with which you can move a cursor. (Comment: wtf is he talking, what's his point?) And then you doubleclick the symbol. And after that everything works on it's own. *jokingly* Ok, I will attend the next finals, which is public viewing btw. So Hanfi won and answers the questions of the moderators after the finals: *Clip about a guy asking him how he prepared against HasuObs especially* *Hanfi answers with: "Yeah, I played what I played everytime... And then I won"* As a sidenote, it's the first time since 8 years that he is speaking with people. With real people. *Guy looking like Bart Simpson with 40 years is shown on camera laughing* The 1. FC Köln is doing it vice versa. They are playing what they are playing everytime... But they lose. A fascinating insight into the spiritual world of a mastermind, Hanfi. And now Hanfi is talking about his future plans, what shall he do now? *Another clip about Hanfi stating that he wanted to stop playing after it but didn't know he would get that far* *And Hanfi talking about how much time Starcraft requires and that he would like to do something different, like flying to Australia for a year to work'n'travel* But not from Berlin, hahaha. It doesn't look like it's that much fun. *crying* I would like to do something different, I can't play Schtarkraft all the time *getting serious* But that's something he should have thought about before he got the defense upgrade for his forcefield and flashed HasuObs with a dance-ling. I had to watch one episode of "Mitten im Leben" (comment: Some stupid "reality" TV show) after that to see normal people. Ending at 13:50 --------------------------------------------- Excuse any occuring errors tl,dr: He made fun about the commentators being that excited and about Hanfi yelling how time intensive SC is.

I think it was definitely not too bad. If you watch his show more often he sometimes bashes things really hard. i think the take interview and the passion they showed ingame will cast a positive light on sc2. :D

He tested a few thing with the live audience, like how well they know it, how interessting it is to watch for the targed group, etc. He did'nt realy talk bad about the game or the esport scene in generell, what normally is his daily bread & butter. They (TVTotal/Pro Sieben [channel]] just did a market research on "how well is starcraft/esport known in the target group" sadly, not a single person raised his/her hand

But I guess that would inadvertently have us discuss how sloppy most Germans are when it comes to improving their English, this thread being just one showcase of it. They knew it would air on ZDFKultur. But it was the same commentary like on the ESL TV German stream. Language: Starcraft 2 is a game that is communicated and learnt in English, thus it's not surprising that people use English terms even when casting in German. Kids are often comfortable using English terms but are uncomfortable listening to full English sentences. Using German names puts you into the newbie corner, sounds weird for guys used to English names and is hard for the casters - because they obviously communicate with others about SC2 in English as well. As far as I know, no scene uses the localized names much except the Koreans and Chinese (Russians?). I understand how some people don't like (pseudo) English words mixed in, but it is a pretty natural development in SC2. Also, I like the style of German casts more - because they have actual players in it. And nobody acts like he is the next YouTube/Twitch superstar. Same with HanFy and his winner's interview. In hindsight a real shame that HasuObs -- although heavily favored -- did not win the finals, as he would have been a lot more eloquent. And the clip would probably not have been shown at all. Hanfy didn't give terrible answers (e.g. he wants to participate in Work&Travel in Australia, not the answer of some nerd that wants to go back to his basement), he just had a whiny voice mixed with a Hessian (?) accent. I hope that TaKe will indeed follow up on his intentions to e-mail the producers to paint a better picture and possibly be invited as a guest to the show to explain things better to the uninitiated audience. Yeah, I think many people that were made fun of would love to be invited to the show - and it never happens. It was just some filler content, nothing more. Makes some people aware of the stuff and everybody else already has forgotten it.

Honestly i find that hard to believe, they might not be the avid gamers (though Raab has a huge fanbase among young people in general) but if I did a random survey among students you can bet 1 out of 10 would at least know what starcraft is or was.
