I hope nobody posted this yet but i thought this is thread worthy (at the very least for german speaking users of this forum).
Yesterday night on german television/comedy show "TV Total" its host Stefan Raab (one of , if not THE biggest entertainer in germany) showed some clips of the german EPS final which was played last weekend (at IFA in berlin) and broadcast on a special interest station of the german national television (this one)
In Raab's Show there is a segment at the beginning of the show where he makes fun of things previously aired on german television and thus this time he showed some clips of the final making fun of the language of the casters (Naruto and Take) and the winner "Hanfy" (who won vs hasuobs) who was interviewed after the game. (u can see the clip here it starts at around 5:40 its in german obviously) now i saw it live and i have to say the whole thing was pretty funny but obviously it still enforces prejudices about esports so what do you think: every publicity is good publicity?
e.: i dont know if the clips can be viewed from outside germany
In this case I'd say it's good publicity. He's trying to raise awareness of esports/sc2, even though it seems like he's just making fun of it. I doubt somebody would go out of their way to make fun of people at an esports event maliciously But, without speaking german and being able to understand the video it's hard to say for sure!
So this is a show thats not about games at all? It seems a little weird he would bring up this topic and kinda make fun ( though it was pretty lighthearted) of the german sc2 casters when starcraft 2 is something barely anyone knows about.
no it has nothing to do with games at all its just a comedy show which runs 4 times a week. he also invites guests (e.g. eminem and will smith were already on this show)
I think it was good, this could have been a lot worse. It's TV Total, the purpose of the show is to make fun of other programmes, but it wasn't really done in a mean way. Shure he played with the typical prejudices a little bit, but the main focal point wasn't that these guys are nerds and losers, but more how bizarre it looks for someone who doesn't know starcraft, because they won't understand a single thing Naruto was saying when he analysed the strategies.
Thought it was actually pretty funny, but I always liked his show I am sure that a lot of people got curious enough to at least google starcraft 2 after watching that and those viewers that were SC2 in the first place must have had gotten a good laugh out of it.

I liked the part where he made fun of the comments on the opener of each player; that's pretty much the best image this game can offer to an outside, normal people audience: a bunch of nerds doing things that seem real complex or unaccessible. Way better than what has been seen elsewhere.
It was better than everything else that has been mentioned about esports/gaming in german television so far^^
You know, the people who spot for these clips they're making fun of are usually students... maybe one of them is actually a fan of the game/scene trying to somehow promote it. Otherwise they probably would have skipped over this content as like 99.99% of the viewers never have heard about this game.
I haven't seen it, but we really shouldn't bash people just because the slightly enforce prejudice about eSports. If each time somebody writes about SC2 he receivers a backlash, then people will stopp writing about it.

Yeah I heard that some of the TVTotal-Staff is into esports and they wanted to show it. They also wanted to bring on guys like HasuObs but the idea was rejected.
Raab used the usual stereotypes, but it wasn't too bad overall, I had to laugh myself a few times. Hanfy's interview was really awkward by itself so it was easy to make fun of.
I like the part where Raab said "You know I might be old-fashioned, but I prefer nexus first" :D (He obviously has no idea what he is talking about.)

I also have to agree with this. It was kinda weird for me to be mirrored like this but I remember seeing something similar with World of Warcraft some years ago where I lol'ed hard and yet I tried this game (but stopped after 6 days because it sucked). People who have no hang on the gaming culture at all won't be bothered.
Another big comedy show on german TV called "switch" also made fun of the gamer language. Nobody cared
Take said afterwads on his IRC Channel that he tries to be invited into TV Total, that he's going to write them today and all that stuff. Would be pretty funny if they invite Take and Naruto to showcase Starcraft2.
At ZDF (comment: TV station) culture I've recently seen a report about a computer game. Who plays Schtarkraft 2? *Looks at audience* *repeats question* *guy in the first row smiles and wants to raise his hand, girlfriend looks angry at him, he stops* *repeats in english* *audience is shaking heads* Ok, nobody... so we can skip this part...? Buuut, try to follow: There is a gaming show, a gaming magazin, named "for the win", where the german starkraft 2 championship is broadcastet. And the commentators are intruducing the finalists: *clip starts* *random girl is introducing TaKe* *dennis is talking about how excited he is about the finals, an occuring underdog and how lucky HasuObs was that any Korean guy wasn't able to attend the finals because his visa ran out* Yeah, bad luck if you forget to extend your visa because you are gambling that much. *Audience laughs* (comment: Probably there's this blinking light which tells them to do so) But now Hanfi is playing vs HasuObs. In Starkraft 2 it is like Dortmund vs Bayern, essientally. And the fight starts and now the tactic of HasuObs is analysed, by the commentators: *Commentating with a lot of anglicisms* *Commentator is surprised by forge before nexus* *Audience laughing confused* Ok... I'm maybe a bit old school but I would have gone Nexus first. *He proceeds to remember the commentary* Ok, we let an expert explain the tactic again. *some random clip of a stuttering, impossible to understand, guy from a german TV show starts to talk random stuff* Ok, got it? And then it comes down to crazy duels and the commentators start to be excited as hell- *Commentator starts to laugh about the dancing lings and jokes about Hasu bashing Hanfi with his keyboard if he would see it* DANCINC LINGS FROM HANFI *Clip of Joachim Löw saying: "That's nice, that's pretty nice"* I'm excited, I'm totally excited, but I just don't know why. The commentator is the Marcel Reif of the nerds, he's crazy like about the soccer world championship. And this is putten to ZDF Culture, it needs to be on ZDF main at saturday 20:15. Thus the older viewers would get something out of their TV evening. And now there is the thrilling decision. It's getting dramatic. *Clip about HasuObs blinkfailing into a loss* *Audience is laughing because they don't understand why the commentators are excited* Yeah, madness (comment: in a positive sense), isn't it? *Audience is told again to clap hands and laugh* What a final. I've seen a lot Schtarkraft 2 finals, but that's the best Schtarkraft 2 finals I've ever seen. 38 Lings on the minimap, 1400 minerals and everything full of microbugs.... It doesn't look like it's that much fun. *crying* I would like to do something different, I can't play Schtarkraft all the time *getting serious* But that's something he should have thought about before he got the defense upgrade for his forcefield and flashed HasuObs with a dance-ling. I had to watch one episode of "Mitten im Leben" (comment: Some stupid "reality" TV show) after that to see normal people.

I couldn't stand Stefan Raab before this, and this certainly didn't do anything to change my mind. I guess after doing multiple comedy shows each week for years, the best way to still make viewers laugh is to just be an asshole about other people.
I have the feeling like these people will rule the world soon.
this was my favourite part. actually, I had to laugh a few times, especially naruto's strategy talk in the beginning was hilarious. (just imagine you've never seen a starcraft match, and then somebody explains you the pros and cons of nexus first against pool first openings. basically it's just gibberish nonsense. it must sound mental to "normal" people :D)
but after all, it's Stefan Raab. he's a douchebag, who manages to make infinite amounts of money by shameless self-promotion and making fun of other people. the sc2 bit wasn't as terrible as some of his earlier "jokes", though.

I don't feel like he really bashed on them like he normally does. There were so many moments where i crinched because I thought he was now really goin nuts about it, but it didn't happen. It was just unfortune that Hanfy won, not to take anything away from him, but he was awkward. Raab just presented it to a bigger audience who don't even get what this whole event is about. That makes it even more awkward. Yet it is just a mirror for our community. Untill we don't get out of those awkward moments it will be hard to be 100% accepted in mainstream media.
It went better than I expected, the first part where they interview Take was actually really good PR. I think this will be more positive than negative. The commentators used a lot of gamer slang language, which most Germans will not completly understand. That was a bit unfortunate, and I think they should try to change that. For example, I never get the feeling that Tastosis use a lot of gamers slang non-gamers wouldn't understand, with Tasteless frequently explaining the game from a beginnerst standpoint (However, I might just not get it since I am not a native speaker). In Germany however, a real gamer slang has developed, and this makes it harder for outside people to understand and enjoy the commentating.
I tried to watch it, got stuck 2 minutes in ads and didn't see a skip button so i closed it again. Thanks for reminding me why i never connected my TV to cable.
I think SC2 on TV is great - especially if it's on one of the major stations - even if it is in the form of comedy. I just wish it was Khaldor there, not TaKe...
Next time maybe SC2 duo-cast TaKe & Raab? He probably tried to cast SC2, failed at it and is now jealous
I think it was all pretty light-hearted and in good fun. One of the better pieces about SC2 on german TV I have seen. TV Total always makes fun about everything and for that standard it was super harmless. I mean this german casting with extensive usage of english vocabulary really is hilarious (even for insiders, now imagine outsiders hearing it)
I don't care what people say, this guy is NOT funny. He never was, never will be. Might be biased, Austrian humor is pretty different. But he didn't bash and those were not serious jokes so he shall be forgiven.
Thats bad. This could bring some of the viewers into sc2. The last thing we need is people who show like this in our community!
For the not german: This show is famous for making lowest quality jokes over other low quality tv. So you must watch other crap in tv to even understand his jokes. Or short: a show for stupid people, that making fun about their own stupidity.
On September 07 2012 01:33 FeyFey wrote: making fun of german gamer language is not new ^^; . Started with a show about Wow that got picked up and the parody was insanely funny.
Oh my god. Thanks for reminding me of that. One of the best parodies I've seen so far:
If you havent seen the original series, just google "giga wow". So sad Giga isnt there anymore
I just watched it and it wasn't that bad actually. He seemed to make fun of his lack of knowledge of sc2 specific terms and so on. The same joke has been made with a lot of sports. Every sport has terms in it that make it sound funny, if you present them the right way.
Maybe in the interview with hanfy the jokes were a bit on the "nerds are socially awkward idiots" side, but not too bad at all. Nice that SC2 was shown there.
Now I'm curious about the woman (or was i not really a woman??) that came after SCII, with the silicon face and neck that he pulled! Also I really don't think the guy in the front's girlfriend looked angry, they were both smiling a little. If anything, I'd say they have friends who do or maybe he does but they both know they wouldn't want to be pointed out to the rest of the crowd on his show anyway.
I don't know if you can watch it outside of Germany, but well, you can try.
Also, this is not PR. Not at all. It's just the typical mainstream media way of depicting "nerd culture". Look at the people in the audience, they've probably never looked beyond the rim of their teacup or shown interest in something unknown to them. Ironically enough, most of them will go home, turn on their PS3 and shout at the screen when they get killed in CoD. Holy crap, this makes me rage.
I have the feeling like these people will rule the world soon.

Actually, the clip reaffirmed me in my preference for english casts. Even though I'm German, the German/English mix is usually so horrible, that I REALLY rather have the whole thing in english.

Edit: At least switch is truly funny parody.
Yeah as German speakers listening to German commentating hurts in the ears :p
I never really liked Raab and his shameless self-promotion nor TV Total itself (though I don't explicitly dislike him like Mario Barth - seriously, what an idiot), but I could not see anything that would have a direct negative impact on the public image of Starcraft or video games in general. He just tried to be funny like he always does and presented the game and for some part the community to a broad audience. Nobody who is not already prejudiced will be affected, and if they are we would not want them to join us anyway, right?
And Take did a fantastic job in the beginning sounding all professional. And Naruto wasn't drunk.
The time when Stefan Raab was kind of funny is long long ago. Now that guy is only self-promoting and squeezing out content to keep his business running.
What he actually does is tryig to make fun of words being used in a sport he has no idea of, stating that gamers are some kids never seeing the sun and unsocial idiots.
I imagine myself watching american football or baseball and I have no idea of the terms being used there. Or you can try to listen to a company's CEO, will probably be the same :D
that was pretty funny lol. The giga wow was hilarious, great show, i remember watching giga warcraft3 ages ago! great game program. what happened to it?

you might understand the language, but you might not understand what the host of this show usually does on the show and how he already screwed a lot of people (by publicly making fun of them). Compared to that, this was like nothing at all^^.
Instead, i was surprised at how moderate he was at this topic, how correct his SC2 sentences (read from the screen) were, and how he represented the whole thing. Notice the people hardly laughing at all. They only did at the end, when he made a joke about HanFy saying that he wants to quit and go to australia for a week (as in the game must be horrible), and when he made a really bad joke about saying those were the first words HanFy spoke to a human being in 8 years. Plus the joke about the korean being too busy playing instead of getting a new visa. Remember, those are people who got probably fed tons of flat jokes already to get them into the state of laughing at everything. They would have laughed for a really bad fart joke. But they basically did not laugh at all during the SC2 part, even though the german casting sounds really awkward (with more english terms than german ones).
Yes, he did try to make fun of the game, instead he promoted it, did not even manage to make fun of it (and Take was superb professional ) and i think a lot of people from the audience do think better now about the game than they did before. So i'm happy for him screwing up when trying to make the game look bad
P.S.: in my humble opinion, i think the guy who did the research on the topic (and there had to be one, else the host would not have been able to correctly speak a single SC2-related sentence, he would have just shown a short clip and repeated something that sounded weird because he didn't understand it. Like he did with the "Nexus first" thing, and later on the "30 Linge im Forcefield") was having a huge influence on how SC2 got actually presented pretty well, with a good explanation about the german championship and that there was a huge battle going on. If that is the case, good work dude.
I thought this was pretty funny...Raab takes the piss out of everyone on TV. I mean come on. Very serious german nerds ITT. He didnt go harder on poor HanFy than he would at any awkward person on reality TV tbh. And the mixing of german and english termns in commentary does not make any sense at all to like 99% of the general, TV-watching public.
Crinchworthy at times, though it could have been a lot worse.
I wonder whether the German casters TaKe and NarutO would have presented the live commentary differently, had they known it would make national television. Same with HanFy and his winner's interview. In hindsight a real shame that HasuObs -- although heavily favored -- did not win the finals, as he would have been a lot more eloquent.
I hope that TaKe will indeed follow up on his intentions to e-mail the producers to paint a better picture and possibly be invited as a guest to the show to explain things better to the uninitiated audience.
The live casting was so much filled with English terms that one must wonder why casting in German is needed at all. But I guess that would inadvertently have us discuss how sloppy most Germans are when it comes to improving their English, this thread being just one showcase of it.
Anyways, good it actually got some airtime, even if it only was in the satire segment of the TV TOTAL show.

I can speak German, I remember this TV show from like 10 years ago? I saw it every so often on RTL 1/2 or something. Also watched the first 5 minutes before the starcraft and yeah the show is pretty much what I remember it to be. Compared to what he usually does the stuff this was actually all right. I even laughed at the "call me old fashioned but I prefer nexus first". Rest of it made me cringe but so did the shit before the starcraft bit. I did start holding my head when they started showing live footage of Take and in game thinking "why am I watching this" because he's just gonna tear it a new one. Then I was surprised when he didn't :o
haha, pretty funny. I think it was definitely not too bad. If you watch his show more often he sometimes bashes things really hard. i think the take interview and the passion they showed ingame will cast a positive light on sc2. :D
Whenever something like this gets on TV, I try and see it from an outsiders point of view. I mean just think about it, this must sound so damn funny, knowing the guy is actually speaking your language but you have no freaking clue what he's actually talking about. Also Hanfi seemed so down about his win, wth is up with that^^ I found it damn funny, I like Raab in general. Laughed quite hard at some points
TV Total is just a tool to catch personel data, like facebook. He tested a few thing with the live audience, like how well they know it, how interessting it is to watch for the targed group, etc. He did'nt realy talk bad about the game or the esport scene in generell, what normally is his daily bread & butter.
They (TVTotal/Pro Sieben [channel]] just did a market research on "how well is starcraft/esport known in the target group"

They knew it would air on ZDFKultur. But it was the same commentary like on the ESL TV German stream.
Language: Starcraft 2 is a game that is communicated and learnt in English, thus it's not surprising that people use English terms even when casting in German. Kids are often comfortable using English terms but are uncomfortable listening to full English sentences. Using German names puts you into the newbie corner, sounds weird for guys used to English names and is hard for the casters - because they obviously communicate with others about SC2 in English as well. As far as I know, no scene uses the localized names much except the Koreans and Chinese (Russians?). I understand how some people don't like (pseudo) English words mixed in, but it is a pretty natural development in SC2.
Also, I like the style of German casts more - because they have actual players in it. And nobody acts like he is the next YouTube/Twitch superstar.
Same with HanFy and his winner's interview. In hindsight a real shame that HasuObs -- although heavily favored -- did not win the finals, as he would have been a lot more eloquent.
And the clip would probably not have been shown at all. Hanfy didn't give terrible answers (e.g. he wants to participate in Work&Travel in Australia, not the answer of some nerd that wants to go back to his basement), he just had a whiny voice mixed with a Hessian (?) accent.
I hope that TaKe will indeed follow up on his intentions to e-mail the producers to paint a better picture and possibly be invited as a guest to the show to explain things better to the uninitiated audience.
Yeah, I think many people that were made fun of would love to be invited to the show - and it never happens. It was just some filler content, nothing more. Makes some people aware of the stuff and everybody else already has forgotten it.
I don't know German, but this guy sounds like he has Jon Stewart type humor where he makes fun of things without context or that he doesn't understand. Anyway, I doubt this would drive anyone away from getting into SC2.
What i found funny is that no one in the audience (aged around 20 - 25 years) admitted to knowing starcraft :p
Honestly i find that hard to believe, they might not be the avid gamers (though Raab has a huge fanbase among young people in general) but if I did a random survey among students you can bet 1 out of 10 would at least know what starcraft is or was.

yea well they weren't going to admit being nerds among the "cool" kids^^
Yeah, I guess it was alright, from an outsider's point of view it's actually more making fun of the fact that our "language" is undecipherable to anyone outside the scene. Not the biggest laugh on my life, but hey, it's exposure for SC2 on national television, and no one was insulted.
I have to admit that even as a german, I don't like german casts. German casters use way too many anglicism, even for words we do have in german or words that could be easily translated, and some of them talk like they never went to any school. They talk like players would talk, not like casters should do it, which, in my ears, just sounds very unprofessional and annoying.
In my opinion it was all in good fun and Take and Naruto didn't seem mad about it at all, they can laugh about themselves and raab ridicules everyone, so it's kind of an honor that sc2 got mentioned. TV-Total is pretty much the biggest show there is in germany, besides "Wetten dass..?", so it's good pr imo. Also I couldn't stop laughing, gotta love the first 10 minutes of TV-Total .
Ye the show is 95% shit but it was just making fun of gamer language. Is anyone really feeling offended by that? Lighten up.
Also Hanfy was funny. Reporter Guy: "How did you prepare, what were your strategies?" Hanfy: "Ye well, played how i always played and in the end i won somehow." lmao
Wow, didn't even know TV Total still exists & it seems they didn't change much over the last years.
I think the starcraft 2 segement was quite funny. I love sc2, but I do make fun of german casters too who try to do it in german (like Mori/HomerJ), but actually use more english. It's just impossible to watch games seriously. For example HomerJ casted a showmatch between LG-IM_Yonghwa and LG-IM_Mvp @Gemscom 2012. He tried to explain sc2 to the audience (mostly fans of Game One (german gaming site) and not sc2) and it was just...not really good. The sc2 interface was in english ofc which didn't help either.

You have absolute no clue about german television if you really think that,
Question is, did he mean it's the biggest show there is, or that the show is shit^^. Because it is definitly one of the better things in german television.
