Greetings,
I hope nobody posted this yet but i thought this is thread worthy (at the very least for german speaking users of this forum).
Yesterday night on german television/comedy show "TV Total" its host Stefan Raab (one of , if not THE biggest entertainer in germany) showed some clips of the german EPS final which was played last weekend (at IFA in berlin) and broadcast on a special interest station of the german national television (this one)
In Raab's Show there is a segment at the beginning of the show where he makes fun of things previously aired on german television and thus this time he showed some clips of the final making fun of the language of the casters (Naruto and Take) and the winner "Hanfy" (who won vs hasuobs) who was interviewed after the game. (u can see the clip here it starts at around 5:40 its in german obviously) now i saw it live and i have to say the whole thing was pretty funny but obviously it still enforces prejudices about esports so what do you think: every publicity is good publicity?
e.: i dont know if the clips can be viewed from outside germany

In this case I'd say it's good publicity. He's trying to raise awareness of esports/sc2, even though it seems like he's just making fun of it. I doubt somebody would go out of their way to make fun of people at an esports event maliciously But, without speaking german and being able to understand the video it's hard to say for sure!

So this is a show thats not about games at all? It seems a little weird he would bring up this topic and kinda make fun ( though it was pretty lighthearted) of the german sc2 casters when starcraft 2 is something barely anyone knows about.
|
no it has nothing to do with games at all its just a comedy show which runs 4 times a week. he also invites guests (e.g. eminem and will smith were already on this show)

All pr is good pr

I think it was good, this could have been a lot worse. It's TV Total, the purpose of the show is to make fun of other programmes, but it wasn't really done in a mean way. Shure he played with the typical prejudices a little bit, but the main focal point wasn't that these guys are nerds and losers, but more how bizarre it looks for someone who doesn't know starcraft, because they won't understand a single thing Naruto was saying when he analysed the strategies.

Haha definitely not. PR about people getting fired for racist comments and dick picks and crazy shit like that is not good PR >.>

Thought it was actually pretty funny, but I always liked his show I am sure that a lot of people got curious enough to at least google starcraft 2 after watching that and those viewers that were SC2 in the first place must have had gotten a good laugh out of it.

This sums it up really well.

Could have been worse.
I liked the part where he made fun of the comments on the opener of each player; that's pretty much the best image this game can offer to an outside, normal people audience: a bunch of nerds doing things that seem real complex or unaccessible. Way better than what has been seen elsewhere.

well i personally prefer going nexus first best line ever ;D
|
It was better than everything else that has been mentioned about esports/gaming in german television so far^^
You know, the people who spot for these clips they're making fun of are usually students... maybe one of them is actually a fan of the game/scene trying to somehow promote it. Otherwise they probably would have skipped over this content as like 99.99% of the viewers never have heard about this game.
|
Thats by no means negative. Never would have thought that Stefan Raab would mention SC2, lol.
|
It's very nice! Of course he makes fun of it - that is basically what his show is all about and it wasn't negative aswell
|
Wow that was actually pretty awesome and somewhat funny
Never expected to see SC2 on TV total on one of the biggest private channels on german TV
|
I haven't seen it, but we really shouldn't bash people just because the slightly enforce prejudice about eSports. If each time somebody writes about SC2 he receivers a backlash, then people will stopp writing about it.

haha cool I love Stefan Raab

Yeah I heard that some of the TVTotal-Staff is into esports and they wanted to show it. They also wanted to bring on guys like HasuObs but the idea was rejected.
Raab used the usual stereotypes, but it wasn't too bad overall, I had to laugh myself a few times. Hanfy's interview was really awkward by itself so it was easy to make fun of.
I like the part where Raab said "You know I might be old-fashioned, but I prefer nexus first" :D (He obviously has no idea what he is talking about.)

I also have to agree with this. It was kinda weird for me to be mirrored like this but I remember seeing something similar with World of Warcraft some years ago where I lol'ed hard and yet I tried this game (but stopped after 6 days because it sucked). People who have no hang on the gaming culture at all won't be bothered.
Another big comedy show on german TV called "switch" also made fun of the gamer language. Nobody cared
