Hey all,

This is something I ran across on the web and thought people here should know about and support. There is this site, Bleacher Report, that covers a wide variety of sports and sporting events. I think it's one of the largest sports sites out there but I don't really know the specifics. The important part here is that it IS a huge site and they (unsuprisingly) didn't cover anything esports related.

About a year ago, I made an account on this site and posted on their forums, essentially, asking why they didn't include esports. Surprisingly, a staff member responded saying they were keeping an eye on esports but it wasn't big enough for them to include it, yet. Well, it appears that's now changed.

Sports and video games have gone together since pretty much the dawn of the video-game industry.

From the early days of alien-looking football players (if you can really call them that) on the Atari 2600 to modern games like NBA 2K12—a game that looks so real, many people looking at it from a distance think it is a real game—sports-based video games have always been a staple of the gaming industry.

Electronic Arts' wildly popular Madden NFL series of games ranks in the Top 10 of video-game sales year in and year out. According to the NPD Group, a leading source of information and statistics for the video-game industry, Madden NFL 12 ranked fifth for total video-game sales in 2011.

With legions of fans the world over, the sports genre isn't going anywhere as far as popularity or sales.

But could the opposite be true? Could video games be considered sports?

On the surface, such a concept seems absurd. How can video games be considered sports?

Yet, more and more the answer to that question seems to be yes.

Welcome to the emerging world of eSports, or electronic sports.

I'm super excited that esports is starting to permeate into more and more sports outlets. On top of that, it appears to be a really well written article and does a good job of introducing people completely unfamiliar with esports, who have a strong background in traditional sports, to esports and the culture. What do you guys think?

Bleacher report is a crap website filled with wannabe journalists. You would never see Bleacher Report as a legitimate source for any real sports news. It may be even worse to have esports associated with the website.

I'm not that huge into sports so I can't really agree or disagree with that statement but I think it's still good news. They get tens of millions of visitors on that site a month so the more exposure the better.

It's a good article imo, that's more important than the quality of the rest of the site if it's as bad as you say it is, in fact it could be an advantage.

I frequent the website from time to time... It has its ups and downs, really. Some writers are phenomenal while others make you wonder how they even got their position. Regardless, a lot of people use the website and it's pretty exciting news that BR is considering esports. The author of this article seems well-informed.

If anything, look at it as a stepping stone on the way for a website or media outlet like espn having a dedicated section devoted to esports, too.

That was a pretty good article actually. Certainly better than I was expecting.

BleacherReport is okay if you can ignore 4-6 spelling typos, missing words and other really bad grammatical errors in almost every piece. They're so consistent I honestly think they troll their readers that way. And if you can ignore how a lot of their articles are definitely troll articles designed to get an angry response, saying a team sucks, a player sucks, this team should trade everyone, get rid of their star player, etc. But some of their writers are pretty good. This article is a good example of BR when it does the job right.

It's like the JJ Huddle of sports journalism. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Halo was on espn for a bit until some people got mad at them for not following strict net neutrality.

Right. It sometimes has some pretty good writers but the majority of it leaves a lot to be desired. I frequent because I know one of the writers as a friend actually. I'll definitely be checking this new MLG (?) section of the website more often, though.

Hey, at least we're starting somewhere... Obviously ESPN isn't going to be writing articles on us yet, but it's nice to see something picking us up, even if most of the writers have issues with there P's and Q's.

BleacherReport is pretty horrible. Most people who follow sports (including myself) don't consider it legit at all. The vast majority of the writers/articles are pretty bad.

Even though Bleacher Report isn't the best source of information, it is extra exposure to esports. Which is a great thing. Thank you for providing the article.

I think that ESPN will be the huge breakout for eSports, but I definitely agree that Bleacher Report featuring it is a big deal. Great thread dude.

Well not every site can be moderated like Team Liquid
Very disappointing...

The only time I saw Sc2 really get recognized by the public was during the NBA lockout when Gordon Hayward from the Jazz announced he would be playing sc2 until the lockout ended.

Thanks, glad you guys agree. Extremely happy that the article was done so well to give people a really good introduction to esports. People are saying that it's been getting around more but I haven't seen anything with nearly this much effort put into it on a site that has nothing even close to esports mentioned elsewhere on it. So definitely a huge step in my book.
