Wasn't there a big competition from EG for a fan to "join them at Dreamhack Summer"?

Teaja will be his number one contender I would say apart from him, a lot of Protoss and we know how he feels about those, so I'd say he's got a good chance of winning.
EDIT: Maybe an unfortunate ZvZ against Nerchio for example and he would lose too.
Good lineup. Would have liked a couple of more NA players to bring all of the community together a bit more. Ill be there to watch the finals this year. Its going to be awsome.
there are some players in there that don't really deserve to be at this tournament imo
for example diestar dragon lalush and merz i get that dragon streams a lot and has many fans but does that make him good enough to participate? i don't think so... with merz and lalush i undestand that they want to have some swedish players there too but if you want to make it the best tournament you can possibly make then you should not invite them because there are much better european players

It's not an invitational, so it's a really stupid argument.

Take the time to read about DreamHack Summer. It is not an invitational tournament but an open tournament which makes your point mute. Seems like a generally negative attitude as well to jump to whatever criticism you can find quickly without even reading the OP fully or informing yourself about the tournament.
On May 31 2012 00:40 Dodgin wrote: Interesting that there's only Koreans on foreign teams in there so far.
GSL / GSTL > Dreamhack , there are Code S matches booked at Dremhack dates and close in proximity. Some of them could probably switch around groups but its not like it is for MLG where there is a break in GSL so alot of them can attend.

It's a freaking open. As long as the team pays (and Millenium does), they can come. Simple as that.
Can't you bother reading the OP before whining ?!

Because it's REALLY expensive to go to DH... It's in a really out of the way part of Sweden so you have to either fly there, or fly to Stockholm and then train over... it's almost a $2,000 trip to come from the USA. Nobody outside of EG can afford to send their players.

I hope teams stop spending 3k a weekend on international flights for players. Limited resources can probably be put to better used.

I understand that it costs a lot to get to sweden from the US, but a bus trip from Stockholm or Gothenburg to Jönköping costs so little per person if you dont book it like 1 day before. So the "out of the way" part is a bit silly.

Yeah, I don't see ANYONE in that list that doesn't deserve to be there, open or not. Every single one of those players is highly talented, despite whats said on some of these posts.
After some deep thinking (fuck im slow) since this is the 2nd stop of the series out of 5, the 5th being invite based on points earned throughout the season, i think the russians are waiting for the event in Romania.

Let's hope so. We never get to see the Rox guys play against anyone. It would be great to see all of Empire, RoxKis and FXO CIS in one tournament.
They are everywhere, i see them in GSL every day.. I'm totally fine with a mainly european tournament and i hope it's not always 30 koreans in every foreign event or else they stop being a foreign event to be a korean event outside of Korea...
For that we allready have almost all other tournaments, keep it like this DH and you will maintain your success..
PS: i'm not anti-korean i pay and watch GSL everyday so i simply don't need to have koreans in all tournaments!

I didn't say anything about them doing well lol it's the fact they either aren't bothering to try or their teams aren't willing to send them.
If you compare teams only EG has consistently sent NA players abroad and they already have good representation so I'm not sure who you're realistically expecting to see.

No, Ganzi is Code S, he won all his Code A matches last season, beating GuineaPig, Polt and MC.
I don't know why people are shocked at the lack of koreans. IEMs and DH's don't pay for flights, so there has always been fewer KRs, except the ones on foreign teams at euro tourneys. That's why I always prefer watching the MLGs/IPLs over the euro tourneys.

Yeah, I agree. They will need to have to get money to pay for the travel expenses if they want more tip top Koreans to play in their tournament. I actually think paying for their expenses is worth it, since it brings a lot more viewers which ultimately is what the sponsors want--the more viewers who see their merchandise, the better.

Dreamhack will get viewers no matter what so they don't need to pay for flights for some select few koreans. It would however maybe be worth it for the korean teams to send their players since that ultimately is what sponsors want--the more viewers who see their merchandise, the better.

It's an open tournament, anyone can attend as long as someone (a sponsor) are willing to pay for them. I think it's a pretty good move for EG to hold on a bit and letting idra practice some time before flying him to international events again, let's face it in his current form he'd probably struggle to reach ro32

DH Stockholm proofed otherwise, which had probably the most viewers of all events we have seen this year (maybe IPL had round same or little more). You dont need a lot of top tier Korean's to bring in a lot of viewers, there's no evidence that if DH would bring in MVP/MKP etc that the amount of viewers will increase with like 10k+.
I dont even like the idea that you pay the trips of certain superstars, it shouldn't be this way. Either you pay the trips for each player who comes to your event or you dont pay for a single one.
I really look forward to this, hoping to go there this time! Hell yeah =)

Its an open tournament, read the title!
EG can afford to send their players their and so can a number of other teams but to have a good return on their investment, they gotta make sure that they place high and HuK has that potential, IdrA not so much.
I like the lack of Koreans. We don't need another tournament like MLG or IPL who pay the trips for 20+ Koreans, while foreigners would have to pay for their trips themselves.
Dreamhack Stockholm was a success and showed that a lot people like to watch foreigners a lot more. I hope DH will keep it like this.

It is not that I´m not agreeing with you, but I find the fact amusing that on nearly every list of top foreigner on TL one name is constantly missing: Socke.
The guy had really strong results in recent premier events: Top 8 at DH and Top 3 Foreigner (Top 12 overall) in the last two MLG events. On top of that he is probably right now the strongest nonkorean PvZ player, coming close to upsetting DRG and actually taking a Bo3 off Stephano.
I just can not believe how underrated a player can be, who is near the absolute top of Foreign play since fall 2010.

MLG winter championships gave ~$1000 to the 16th placed player and the spring arena paid the top 8 players. Probably one of the reasons why they do not have many non locals (i.e. Europeans) attending. I agree it kinda sucks they spread the prize pool only to 4 spots, they should make it top 8. But 3e place ($3,4k) would easily cover the trip and with not a field full with Korean's (like MLG), a lot of guys have a better chance to make some money at DH Summer then for example going to MLG Anaheim. Not to mention for locals (Europeans) it's much cheaper in general to fly to Sweden then to the VS.

Yet this is probably the most complete foreign lineup we've had in a long time with Thorzain, Huk, Naniwa and Stephano all attending.
Old Dreamhacks has almost every foreigner though and better Koreans too.
While every other tournament is getting better and better with their player pool Dreamhack is going backwards, largely down to a lowish prize pool and their refusal to pay stipends just making it not worth it for Korean/NA players unless they're on the rich teams.

this tournament is stacked. Just enough Koreans to be totally international and not so many to be the gsl over seas, nice. That said this looks like a ThorZain, NaniWa, Stephano, Huk proving ground. If one of them can come out on top over this competition it will show them as a code A/code S quality player, which I believe all of them to be. This looks sick, we should see some awesome games.
I don't understand how Stephano have the time to participate in so many tournaments? it's MLG the weekend before if i'm not mistaken, and if it is true that he is participating in GSL that will be in the weekdays between MLG and Dreamhack. No GSL for Stephano, we need a PSA considering how many people think he's still going.
looks good, I'll go see it me thinks. Would love it if marineking polt and dongrae showed up, also a german or two would be nice. I hope my main-man thorzain wins, or naniwa.
Can't really see anyone beating Stephano except Nerchio and Hero Cant' see anyone beating Hero but Puma, Stephano, one of the good PvP (Nani,Huk,Elfi,JYP) and maybe thorzain.
But the real question is: if Stephano wins, is it an other sign that he will one day become EG? :p

No we don't. Stephano is easily the best foreigner whether he wins this tournament or not.
Lol no, Naniwa is better.
Location: Sweden.
Opinion noted.
If Koreans didn't play this game Stephano would be a bonjwa by now. He just absolutely rapes all foreigners, time and time again like they're nothing at all and almost every tournament he goes to he's beaten good Korean players. As a Stephano anti-fan who would love to see him lose even I have to admit he's good and leagues ahead of other foreign players.
Naniwa on the other hand is still getting knocked out of major LAN's by foreign players, got knocked out of Code A round one 3 times and for every good tournament has 2/3 bad tournaments. He's still never won a major LAN with Koreans present and has nothing like the consistancy or the peaks Stephano has had.
Given this player list, this is probably the first tournament in a very long time where foreigners probably have a better chance at winning than Koreans.

This is the problem Sundance was actually talking about, having so many events running together and clashing. Of course you won't get the best players in every tournament, no matter how big the prize pool is - there are just way too many different organisers (I mean, loads of events is great, but it has its downsides). It's like a week after MLG, and there's probably GSTL running at the same time..it's either a huge expense for teams to send over their players to more than one event every so often, and it is also a massive strain for players to compete in all these huge tournaments in a row. I mean, you're either going to attend DreamHack, or you will prepare for GSTL, it's either or.

This tournament is stacked, I really want to see proof of any negative impact on vierwership of "only" this number Korean participants before I believe it.

The viewership of the last Dreamhack really wasn't very good until finals in terms of the Sc2 tournament.

What are you talking about? Dreamhack Stockholm, together with IPL 4, had the most viewers of any SC2 tournament this year! Even the kinda boring first day had more viewers than Red Bull Battlegrounds all weekend.
But overall they had more viewers than all the IEMs, HSC, Assembly, Red Bull Lan, Lone Star Clash. No idea about MLG Winter Championship though, but I don't think they get that much more viewers either (why else hide them numbers?)

It's like a week after MLG, and there's probably GSTL running at the same time..it's either a huge expense for teams to send over their players to more than one event every so often, and it is also a massive strain for players to compete in all these huge tournaments in a row. Wow. this Sundance guy is totally right; screw competitions. We only need be 1 major tournament in US and 1 major tournament in Korea. And New York is probably a great place to hold the US tournament. And the US and Korea tournament holders should join force to promote unity. That way they can control everything and make sure things are going smoothly. They should even charge people to watch to guarantee high quality tournaments. Because Sundance GETS IT. It was the first 128 to sign up for dreamhack that got the spots so that probably explains why there arent any americans. But I kinda like it. It was kinda meh to go all the way to Sweden for Dreamhack Winter and then there was no sort of open bracket -.-

I'm not defending anyone, but unfortunately, eSports can't always be just what the community wants. At the end of the day, the viability of an eSports still depends on cold, hard cash, so actually going about eSports with business, and at some point, profitability in mind, will secure its stability, and is great for the long term.
Obviously, having loads of tournaments offering mountains of cash is great, but one has to be careful that it is not unsustainable. You can't expect a dozen huge events each month, with all the best players participating at each, that was my point. Teams have limited budgets to send their players around the world (which can be extremely costly), players have limited time and stamina, etc.

Grubby will be in China for Starswar 7 i guess
You are correct and Feast has mentioned on stream (not speaking for him just repeated his response) that he wont be competing in tournaments until he's done with school which should be soon I think.
This will be epic so many great players and yea way more less korean and morea EU players will be great to see these games and see how the results turn out

I dont think its the quantity of tournaments so much as how they coordinate with on another and communicate. Tournaments will differentiate themselves based on production values and players pools. And I really think player pools will be based on how well tournaments treat and communicate with the teams.
I think the problem is having too many juggernauts stomping around the year and investing big only to have scheduling conflicts which unquestionably hurts all parties involves. If fans around the world continue to turn out regardless then more power too them, but something will eventually have to give.
Motherland and Fatherland should have players at this event. SO far from Russian sites i have heard that these players should be coming: VPBenQ Turuk VPBenQ Roll (this one is a may be according to the team manager) Brat-Ok (acording to him from about 2 weeks ago on a stream that he will go)
P.S. To those asking about Empire.Kas- in a recent interview he mentioned that he will not go to Dreamhack because of personal problems (dont know specifics)
Whoop, can't wait to see Hero and Huk's run through this tournament. Would love to see Grubby there as well. Not too late to see some more big names join the list. The more the merrier and all that.
Looks kinda nice! Would've hoped for more Koreans but DH still doesn't pay flights n stuff so it's not really a big surprise...pretty sure there's a GSL going on around that time as well. About the americans, are there really any other than HuK who would be worth sending? If Idra would get back in shape he would have a chance too of course. I do have to admit it would've been really nice to see what Illusion could've done had he participated!
Maybe it is not as lucrative and accessible as MLG, that's why not a lot of top koreans outside foreign teams. Also, it's an open bracket, which is not worth the effort to spend thousands on plane and hotels. I cant believe the MLG arenas, where there are no live audience to pay for tickets, have more top koreans. I hope Huk or Hero takes this.

I wonder if there is anything going on with Morrow and DH? Morrow was not participating in last DH Winter, now he is not participating at this DH summer.
Why would Swedens best zerg player not attend Swedens largest esport event twice when he (as far as I know) lives in Stockholm?
I'm trying to remember from previous Dreamhacks, but what is the broadcast timeframe? I am in NYC. So would that be something like 4am to 6pm each day?
After his MLG performance I think that Sase has a great chance of taking this home, especially now his PvZ is drastically better and he is boasting the confidence of beating Stephano on the way to a top 4 finish. Hoping Nerchio can do well as well because I just love his ZvZ. Serious lack of Germans though
I hope Dreamhack has no problem delaying their finals for approximately 5 hours, given that GoOdy is now in it :D also cool to see Daisy play in an offline tournament.
Daisy just won TSL4 qualifier so i am very interested in seeing how he performs in a offline setting. Pleased that more top players are going, should make sunday/monday a lot more competitive.
MOON ISN'T IN THIS ? Damn, last DreamHack Summer was all his ( and Huk's), I remember having important exams next day but couldn't stop watching Moon, what an amazing player he is on LAN tournaments.
