Almost four weeks have passed since the epic conclusion of GSTL Season 1 at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
We would like to thank everyone for their support for GSTL and hope you enjoyed our first season. In the meantime we have been working hard to prepare an even better and more exciting Season 2 of our team league.
Today, we are happy to announce that for GSTL Season 2 two additional teams will be joining the competition, increasing the lineup to 12 teams in total.
These two additional teams are none other than TeamLiquid and Fnatic! We hope our international fans are looking forward to the two teams' performances and look forward to Season 2 of GSTL as much as we do.
With the addition of two new teams the format for GSTL has been adjusted slightly. However, the overall structure of the tournament has stayed the same: Round 1 -> Round 2 - > Round 3. With 12 teams participating, we will be able to enjoy more GSTL matches than in Season 1 and a tighter, more action packed schedule. Since the season length was not increased but the number of matches is higher, we will have more consecutive GSTL games which should be good news for all GSTL fans!

I am pretty excited for this! GSTL has provided some of the best games and best finals of sc2 so far and I am hoping for some good games from liquid and fnatic.

Then again, I want TLO do awesome in GSTL, even if it means the sacrifice of that beard.
But sick lineup of GSTL teams. Good to see Liquid and Fnatic in. Interesting to see Zenex still alive and kicking around. Perhaps it's time to resurrect or recreate a certain epic thread.
For me it still feels half ogs playing on their own. Feels weird to train in other team house and play against them,at least from the outside.
Well, they are in different groups so they won't meet until at least the semis. And once you get that far, it is pretty much unavoidable. Even in GSL, you have team kills early as well as teammates in finals...
Hell yeah... I'm so happy... I've been hoping for this ever since GSTL started! I would love to see a few more of our hometeam-heros in Korea. Awesome!!
fecking eh!! TL... so whats the KR lineup going to look like? There's Jinro and Haypro right now as well as, obviously, the Koreans Taeja, Zenio, and Hero... TLO is going soon (apparently) should be pretty sick exciting. Wonder if anyone else will go for the season??????
On May 03 2012 17:11 dCc wrote: What about the oGs partnership?
Having oGs and TL continue to be a single team would have been unfair. I mean, Team Liquid has two of the top eight players in the GSL and oGs has Supernova. Add in the fact that Liquid now has enough players in Korea, they can branch off with two teams, but still be partnered.
Should be fun with the two "foreigner" teams involved. Should bring a new hype to GSTL.
On May 03 2012 17:17 Fragile51 wrote: Fuck yeah. Good to see they changed the format. Previous format was pretty ass-backwards, group stages is way better. Can't wait! :D
This is the same system they had last time, nothing really changed but the number of teams competing.
Wait... How many players does Liquid have in Korea? Hero, Taeja, Zenio, Jinro and...? Even if they have 1-2 more isn't this an issue in a Bo9, where 5 players should play. It will be very predictable
Should do this GSTL finals at a dreamhack arena if possible! Would be awesome in an epic arena Excited that other foreign team are in it. Hope slayers do better this season

Think TLO and Haypro are going as well, they gave short statements about it in the other thread
Also fnatic's lineup is pretty good, hope too see Moon do well!
Yea I'm not a big fan of seeding FOUR whole teams. It just means we won't be seeing 1/3 of the teams until the second round, which is quite a lot of actions.

When is season two due to start? I assume it will be after the conclusion of GSL s2 on the 19th as there don't appear to be many gaps in the schedule before then?

As far as I've seen Liquid are absolute beasts in team leagues, even more so than the heavy hitters of the team are individually. Do we have a definitive answer on who we will see tearing it up over there? AFAIK, there are HerO, Zenio, TaeJa, Jinro, HayprO and TLO. I would love to see Sheth back in the GOM studio
Liquid's got a really easy first group with only Slayers being the main threat (Teaja all-kill on that match). Hoseo are liable to upset both Slayers and Liquid.
Group B is brutal. I can't see fantic winning a match.
I don't think anyone would want to be in group A for the second round.

ByuL interests me more to be honest. He seems to be improving at a faster rate than Moon and Moon seems to have this really cheesy, all-inny tendency and some really weird decision making. But the more players we get to watch the better I guess.
I'm pretty much never a "go foreigner!" guy, but I'm rather excited to see TLO, Jinro, and Haypro in the GSTL (and maybe Sheth and Ret?). It's such a unique and prestigious stage to play on. GL Liquid

i actually think after fnatic is favored in group B after IM. oGs is terran heavy and doesn't have a competent zerg and TSL is zerg heavy doesn't have a competent protoss. race balance is kind of important in teamleagues when all of the teams' aces are similar in skill (alive, polt, and prob supernova?)

Well since IM doesn't really do well in the GSTL I can't see them advancing past the preliminaries. I think oGs and Fnatic will advance from Group B

Byul from what i've seen is a really creative player with amazing control, but who still has a lot to learn. Still, can't wait to see him play. I'm looking forward to him more then to Moon, agreed.
buying this GSTL season for sure. Wouldn't miss it for the world.
Liquid should feel cautiously optimistic of their chances in the first round too... Zenex is the sick man of GSTL, and Liquid has an answer for each of NSH's aces (Sage and Jjakji).
Good news about the teams but I am disappointed that they will use the stupid Preliminaries + Pennant Race format once again instead of going back to the previous one where you could see all of the teams for quite a few matches.
THIS IS AMAZING! No only will we see TLO, Jinro, and HayprO (possibly ret) BACK in GSL but we will get to see MOON BACK TO! and TOD and NIGHTEND will make there debuts! wooooo

I could maybe see Sheth going since I think I remember TLO saying he might look for his own place or something ... but maybe I just heard him/am remembering what he said wrong.

I don't think so...In other team legaue matchs ,fnatic had taken down some good teams such as TL,MVP,ZENX which proved that they really have chance to take over any match agains the korean teams.
I don't like this system. I dislike how four teams (PRIME, StarTale, MVP, FXO) with my favourite players on don't get to play until round 2. We have to wait a while to see players like MKP, Parting, DRG and Oz play. I think this is also bad for the players. I'd be gutted to not be able to play these games - to not get to play in that atmosphere.
On a more positive note, the added teams are great. We will get to see a lot more foreigners vs koreans!
Also, how will this work for Liquid, since I understood a lot of their players aren't living in SK/Seoul?

It won't be easy but Slayers now are nothing like they were and all their roster is so weak to Protoss. NSHS are also a great team with a lot more depth than Liquid but Hero and Taeja are better than any NSHS players so Liquid definitely have a chance to win.
I really hope MLG realizes that their summer championship is almost perfectly lining up for the GSTL finals and they take advantage of it like IPL did :D
Two foreign based teams in gstl, with an actual chance to advance, this is going to be great! Here is hoping we can see a Chinese team or maybe EG in the next one.

I kind of agree with this. I miss the group stage format because you get to see all the teams play more. Liquid could go 0-2 and then be gone completely so fast.

Gonna put this in spoilers because it was unclear exactly how big of a leak this was, if a mod wishes they may delete:
Actually IPL5 and GSTL finals will both happen in Vegas again. When Forbes wrote an article about it (I believe it was Forbes) they said that August 5th to 8th I believe (I forget the exact date... I believe it was around there though) will be IPL5 and GSTL finals, in Vegas.
I could be wrong on that though... maybe that's the GSTL after this one.

Liquid doesn't have depth against a team like Slayers. Guys like Ryung and MMA can snipe Jinro and Taeja, and let's not get started on what MMA does to Zergs. That leaves Hero, but he can't carry a team alone.
Liquid is objectively better than Zenex I think, but NSHOSEO will be close. Jjakji is very dangerous, as are Sage and San. Our second Vegas event in August will incorporate IPL5 and GSL. We’ll continue to do a lot of small events like South by Southwest (SXSW), where we’re doing an All-Star League of Legends, StarCraft II and Street Fighter X Tekken.

Still, I'm sure that could still be GSTL. And it's not set in stone yet either from what I've read about it: http://www.esfiworld.com/news/igns-david-ting-gstl-cooperation-pax-conflict-streaming-subscription-model
Will Tastosis be casting? Tasteless has been on top of the metagame lately... I learn a lot whenever I listen to him and his vast knowledge of the game and making spot on calls everytime. Kinda like Moletrap when he called out Ryung in a GSTL match when everyone thought that Ryung wouldn't be picked. I have clue as to why people feel the need to hate on Tasteless or Moletrap. Is it because those two have the most knowledge and understanding of SC2 out of all the casters out there? Or what is it, why do people start hating on Tasteless and Moletrap all of a sudden?
I would absolutely love for there to be another fantasy league for this. I have not enjoyed a GSTL as much as the one that had the corresponding fantasy league.
Why is it still best of nine? I don't mind having all these games, but I think it's better for the league if it's best of sevens until to the finals to implement more well thought out strategy with more reserve for fielding out X and Y players. Nonetheless, GSTL is the only thing worth watching for me, and I'm happy.
...but I hope a real foreign team tries to compete in GSTL even when it`s really expensive to send players from all over the world to korea and chances vs all these SUPERhumans are slim to win .... even though I think mouz for example (as the best foreign team in my opinion) is hot as a team and they could show that not all white dudes suck .
Maybe if GOM pays a few planetickets for maximum PR around the world and top viewer nummers it`s possible...
I will watch TL fight in GSTL anyways so good luck guys
The Bo9 on all stages is absolutely awesome! The distribution of teams is very nice and fair - almost as if it wasn't really randomized. (np, i won't tell anyone)

While i agree that Taeja is by far the most dangerous player against NSHoSeo, they've been pretty much 50/50 as of late, jjakji winning 2-0 in ipl 4 open bracket and they went 1-1 in series in the GSL ro32 this season. NSH has historically been struggling against strong terran players in the team league, so the Jjakji-Taeja matchup is pretty crucial, as both of the players are capable of pretty much clear the rest of the opposing teams roster.

If they absolutely needed a new team, it COULD be possible to get EG in. They could fly in thorzain sooner than expected, convince idra to go, and then theyd have 5 players

5 players is far to few, in that case they could get coL instead since they have nada, heart, sangho, ganzi and trimaster in Korea.
