From a business perspective it does of course make the most sense because it basically eliminates any financial risk, still it makes me sad that they don't even try to come up with a new business model that holds benefits for both customer and seller given this is a relatively new market. But then again in capitalism the easiest way to make a profit still is extortion.
I do wonder how many sales they would have to make to break even. So 26k prize + the infrastructure (lets say its..2k for each player because some have to fly further than others and maybe MLG got some flight deals because of buying so many tickets/rooms, so 2k x 32? 64k + lets throw another 10k for intangibles) so it comes out to 100k. Lets say they want to fund at least half of it by PPV and the rest by sponsors. So thats only 5000 people paying. If MLG usually gets like 20/30k viewers for its tournaments then I could see them sitting there thinking they could get 1/6th of the people to pay money.
The real question is, how will the sponsors react if the broadcast numbers they are shown for Winter Arena are only 5k-6k instead of the expected 20k-30k? I cant imagine anyone sponsoring MLG being super excited about that.

I am unsure how to feel about this ... I will probably pay the 20$ in the end but I will make sure MLG knows I don't exactly agree with it
|
If it was something I'd known about for a while, I might have paid for it, but saying "oh by the way, the event costs 20 dollars" ten days before the event itself? What the funk?
From what I understand, the normal Championship season will be free for those who don't want to pay (I myself will probably pay for HD stream/VODS), so I don't have a problem with the price, just the fact that it was announced so late. However if they raise the price for watching the streams in HD by a lot, I might react more passionately.
Good luck, MLG.

Dear MLG, You are not a $20million+ budget Movie, you are not something edible that keeps people alive. You are a little starcraft tournament in america with substantial online veiwership.
$20 bucks is way too much.
To put this in perspective if this charges were applicable for every mlg event in 2012 my father pays less to cable TV network to view premier league footaball every year.

So much for beating out previous concurrent viewer numbers this year.
|
MLG will do whatever it feels like doing, personally I won't pay but I am not angry at them. Free market is free, if they want to charge for their product and feel like this is the way to go then be my guest. My own view is that it will backfire horribly, but I can't stress this enough, I don't want them to fail. I guess Assembly it is for me, even better, more Polish home boys to cheer for

VOD will be released for free for those who didn’t purchase an Arena pass one week after the end of the competition
This is enough for me. MLG is pushing it with this move.

Which makes me completely clueless as to why they didn't make a live event open to spectators -.- It seems that MLG specializes in the live events and 20+$ would have been completely reasonable to go see a 3 day event with some of the biggest Korean names in attendance. This whole ordeal just seems poorly planned out and completely devoid of prior thought, not the savvy business practices I'd want to see in the "savior of Esports".

Like many others here, this is just not feasible for myself at this time. I don't entirely blame MLG for doing this, they are a business after all and they have offered a great value in the past (perhaps too good a value judging by this thread). I feel enforcing the gold annual membership would of been better received. Sure, the few free events that take place would get less viewers but the value that the paying public get would be significantly better.
If I had the spare money to pay ~£15+ per event (assuming the usual piss take on EU currencies), I would happily pay up but the fact is a great amount of people (at least in the UK, I can't speak for elsewhere) are cutting day to day things for bills right now. To pay that amount for a relatively small 3 day event in times where spare money really isn't easy to come by is just not doable in my situation at the moment and as a gold member I do feel somewhat hard done by that MLG chose to do this.
I feel the value of this PPV is poorly judged for the times we are going through, MLG has every right to do it and I fully see why they are, after all PPV is pretty common in the US for special sporting events, but sadly I can't support the move myself.

i'm really not a fan no matter the price, i know some may think im stingy but one of the major draws to video games and sc2 in particular is its high value to cost entertainment wise, i have student loans and every dime i can save matters, i'm very upset at the lack of a free low quality stream and am afaid like many other's ill have to find an alternative way to view it

I won't pay. MLG isn't reliable their stream never works.

On February 14 2012 17:54 aLt)nirvana wrote:Show nested quote +By Sundance DiGiovanni For $20 you get a full weekend of nothing but the absolute best StarCraft 2 in the world. That’s roughly the same cost as a trip to the movies (with a stop at the concession stand), a large pizza, a small venue concert, or a round of drinks. Don’t want to buy anything without seeing it first? We agree, and we wouldn’t ask you to. You should know exactly what you’re getting. We’ll be streaming the first match from the Main Stream and each of the three gameplay streams on Friday and Saturday for free. And the Dr Pepper MLG Ultimate Access Stream (more info on this soon) will be free to all, without an Arena pass, all weekend long. Go check out a full demo of the premium streaming page and we promise you’ll be hooked for the entire weekend. IMO sundance makes a very valid argument. We have been getting a free ride for quite awhile, the MLG experience has always been amazing and high quality and it is well worth paying even $20 for. I see him as someone just trying to make his business sustainable, so it can keep going on and doesn't go bust after 1-2 years when all the "sponsorship money" dries up. However I do think they have to rework the way they have spent their money. Spending 100k on flights/accommodation for players and only 20k for prizes is NOT the way to go. Would very much have it the other way around, 100k for prizes, 20k on accommodation/tickets. Everything done TSL3 style (which was all online and AMAZING) and perhaps only the finals / Top 4 done live. I still fail to understand the obsession with having tournaments done offline since there are so many more viewers ONLINE then there are offline and they get to see mandatory commercials, overlays etc that sponsors care about and the live audience can simply choose not to see.
Here is my 2 cents
Those who have not paid for the premium tickets have gotten a free ride. I have paid for the MLG Gold premium ticket, and I hope not they fuck around with it, since I still have 5 months left of it. Personally, and I think alot of people share the same thought, 20$ for possibly only 8 koreans is expensive. I am a student, though I live in Norway and we got money from the government, it's quite expensive. I could buy a game and enjoy 20 hours for less than 20 bucks.
And people haven't been on a free ride. The amount of commericals they have done, it's insane. They have to have earned quite alot from that. And in that sense, with their current business modell, they depend on the free riders for sponsors to have their ads in.
I agree with you that they could have done something differently with MLG Winter Arena. The fact that Sundance state how much money it costs for flights and accommodation is to convince the community to invest 20$ into this tournament. And the obsession with having tournaments done offline, even though they are all online because BNET doesn't have LAN support, (if I have interpret your issue right) is because you get to see your favorite players and casters and you get to feel the energy from the crowd. Crowd reactions has an impact on the viewers at home.
|
Can anyone explain me, how 50-70k people watching some ads is not more money or atleast the same amount then the 3-5k people that will be paying for the service ?
Please rethink this MLG, specially with assembly being on the same weekend. For many people this will be an easy choice
|
$20 for the entire MLG year, ok. For one one-shot tournament? How is that justifiable? Announced two weeks in advance? Have you no common sense at all?
|
Sorry guys 20$ is too much for a 3 day event. I'll be ok with 5-10$. Assembly on the same weekend. Going to watch the Vods.
|
not paying for this, sorry.
Assembly just got a new viewer =)
|
Sucks that I can't afford this. Sorry MLG.

If we want to grow e-sports even further, we need to accept things like this. This money is directly supporting leagues, players, teams, which need money. Progamers are not living in mansions, drving 100k cars. Community is supportive as it is, but we need to take a step further.
so we should all shell out $20 so progamers can live some dream lifestyle?

The most hilarious thing would be if the LR thread for MLG would be like 30 pages xD
