Criticism is allowed. Undue flaming is not. Take a second to think your post through before you submit.

Bans will be handed out.

Should go without saying, but don't link restreams here either.

Whatever the price, having no alternative to an all-inclusive, 5 streams, 20 hours package seems silly.
No free stream at all is plain dumb if you talk about "furthering eSports"...

It doesn't matter that much as the MLG Pro Circuit will (may?) stay as is and there are always so many other ways to get into SC2.

I support and understand the decision, but it is a shame the business realities do not apparently allow for a free model to be viable in this community while maintaining the scale MLG aims for. I personally likely won't buy a ticket and I hope it can be a success, but hopefully MLG has a less costly alternative planned in case it does not. That this is necessary certainly demonstrates that there is not much hope for sc2 to significantly grow and it highlights that it will likely have a limited life span, which of course was always the realistic scenario, as was the case with brood war.

Sir Scoots on Live on 3 said something like that will happen and I have to agree with this buisness model. If we want to grow e-sports even further, we need to accept things like this. This money is directly supporting leagues, players, teams, which need money. Progamers are not living in mansions, drving 100k cars. Community is supportive as it is, but we need to take a step further.

so we should all shell out $20 so progamers can live some dream lifestyle?

Not to mention we haven't even heard any pro gamers. In actuality very little is publicly known about the finances of the current Esports scene. This is just MLG talking, for all we know GOM is turning a huge profit from using sensible business practices.

aren't the korean teams meant to sort out sponsors so their players can fly to events etc?

I think MLG could do themselves a favour by answering some of the communities concerns instead of just hiding behind the old "Buy a ticket and help esports"

As someone who paid for Gold, I feel cheated.
If they had advertised it correctly I would not have bought Gold and I will certainly not do so in the future. This is like GSL "special" events all over again.
I will be watching Assembly.
Supporting esports and all that fancy talk is one thing, but misleading your customers and then slapping another pricetag on your tournaments is something different.

Just tell me, what did the gold members get for paying 30$ last year in August?
I don't mind paying for SCII, and I have "supported" Esports in many fucking occasions. I have paid well over 150$ in GSL subscriptions, 20€ in charity, and then some minor amounts for Assembly and HSC.

But I hate it when they just steal my fucking money. tell me, what will gold members get from MLG this year?
Because last year we got nothing extra compared to the 8 million people who just filled in a shitty hot pocket deal and got 3 free silver passes.

I am somewhat mad atm, if you can tell me what I got SCII related from my gold membership I might be able to cool down and continue "supporting" MLG. But now I am just mad.

You still can watch the MLG Pro Circuit Championship, thats the main event, the winter Arena is "only" a larger qualifier for the Championship with added pricepool.

Would have went out of my way to watch if it were free.
Won't be buying a pass to watch now. What a shame.

you've all been spoiled by free, unsustainable, low standard content, says I

do you pay for every event there is?
ESL, GSL, GSTL, MLG, IPL, NASL, ...
That easily adds up to more than 100$ per month and I'm probably missing something.

I'm just gonna take the guess and say you're not paying for all of this. And if that's the case, just how poor are you?
I'm fine with paying money if the quality I get is good and if I feel like it's not overpriced. 20$ for a single event, on a weekend when I'm probably not spending all my time in front of the computer, when the event is in a different timezone and I can not watch a significant amount of the games - especially the finals? Not a good deal. At all. Not even a remotely good deal compared to the MLG Pro Circuit Gold membership.

20$ for this event is semi-okay for americans. It is, however, an extremely shitty deal for everyone in europe or asia. And all that while we have a comparable tournament running at the same time that offers a free HD stream.
What was sundance thinking? I guess they are running out of venture capital.

I can get a monthly streaming package with full Premier League, Champions League, NHL, Formula 1, Movie channels, and all the latest TV series for about $25 a month.

$20 for a weekend of SC2 matches doesn't really compare favorably. Why compare MLG to expensive social stuff like cinema, drinking, and food instead of comparing it to other streaming services?

ROFL, prediction of the day imo.

I can't wait to find out how well this goes for mlg, I mean, does it cost them money to make the show available on ppv? I'm pretty sure they are losing money unless they got some sick backing.

Don't think I'll shell out 20 bucks for this. It's too much for one weekend and there's plenty of other starcraft content available anyway.

There is one thing that keeps bothering me as I read through the OP, other poster's opinions, and Sundance's Twitter, and that is that Starcraft, currently, supports MLG. Not the other way around. MLG was raised by Halo, but in the last year SC2 has taken the main stage, brought the highest viewer counts, and the most live attendees. While I respect Sundance, what he does is good work, but this legitimately feels like a sucker punch. It seems like he wants to see if he can put an MLG event at opposing times to Dreamhack, charge extra money for it, not offer a free stream, and get away with it.

MLG is growing because of Starcraft, and all of us adorable fans. Halo and Call of Duty are all well and good, but it was shown all throughout 2011 that their viewership is much smaller than ours. I don't like how inorganic it feels. I am by no means against paying for Starcraft however, I have purchased many GSL passes. But this is something else.

It seems like MLG is trying to scoop up some quick cash to support MLG, and not necessarily furthering esports or Starcraft.
