Well, I'd rather buy my wife some flowers.... good timing, it's valentine's day and I am sure she'd be happier to receive some flowers rather than having her husband feeling obligated to watch MLG all weekend, as he had to pay for that...

We are not charging money for this stuff (and never want to) and the Bar does it for free, but now turns out that we (the organizers) have to spend 20$ to make this event available, while this is not that much money for us I really think that this will not really help Barcraft (even though MLG seems to approve Barcrafts and suggests to attend one if someone does not want to spend the money) in general. I also agree that it is a bit unfair to create a certain hype and now (while most Barcrafts are already organized) to give out this news. We will show this stuff now anyway but i am not sure if I could decide next time if I want to show assembly or MLG at a Barcraft how the outcome would be. This also raises a concert about hot they will deal with Barcrafts in the near future because here in Germany it is MUCH more expensive to show PPV Events (e.g. soccer) in a public spot and i do not really like the idea to get into this stuff at this early stage of E-Sports. I am not a MLG Gold member but i absolutely do not get why they are not giving out discounts because this might have let some people to get Gold passes. Do not get me wrong i am a huge fan of MLG and the MLG Barcraft we did last time was absolutely awesome but the direction where this seems to lead is not got for MLG or SC2 or the community in general. PPV should be very good for barcrafts, ur offering a service for free to the people, depending on ur barcraft situation, which they would have to pay 20$ to watch at home.. look at all the sports bars showing sky in germany, you think there would be as many people if they all can watch for free at home ?

Anyone who doesn't just doesn't care enough about e-sports/SC2. MLG isn't e-sports or SC2. Just because they have enormously high costs and need a lot of money from the customers to cover that costs, doesn't mean that by deciding not to support an over-priced product, I don't support e-sports. I wan't to support and I do support products that have a reasonable price/performance ratio. This MLG event just isn't that for me.

If we want to grow e-sports even further, we need to accept things like this. This money is directly supporting leagues, players, teams, which need money. Progamers are not living in mansions, drving 100k cars. Community is supportive as it is, but we need to take a step further. I understand that e-sports needs money, but I am not convinced that they go the right way about it. This is my point of view, I'm not even sure I am right about it and it feels like some deep sociological/psychological mumbo-jumbo... however. I, like probably 80% of their viewers and all viewers of e-sport, am young man that was brought up in the era of free internet. Pretty much everything is free if You look for it, most of it illegal, but that's topic for another discussion. Almost every successful "thing" in "our" culture is free of charge, google, facebook, twitter, streams, e-mails, youtube, music portals etc. This is the way to go, paying for content is somewhat "old business" model. Of course those companies sell our personal information to profit, but it doesn't bother me, I don't put anything vital on the internet so they can have it. Paying for stuff just seems "wrong" to me. Don't get me wrong I pay for stuff, I have cable TV, sometimes I pay for a boxing event which I think is a definition of PPV. 1,5-2h sports event with one major fight at the end. I pay for the sport I love, soccer, to be able to watch, Champions League, Premiership, Primera Divison, Bundesliga, Ekstraklasa, but that doesn't mean I do it with a smile. Now when I think of it I probably pay more $ per hour for sport than I would get for 20$ of content from MLG Arena (per hour ofc). I tell myself that this is old technology, TV was born through paying for stuff, but not the internet. Only real successful business model on a global scale, in the internet with paid subscription I can think of is... porn, and it was never easier to get free porn than now. I don't see porn industry crying that they must stop fucking in front of the camera, because they can't feed their children. I am not internet guru, I have no idea where to get money for e-sports from but I am sure as hell that PPV is not the way to go. There must be other ways, maybe free, maybe paying but just a little. Look for example what Louis CK did bypassing the label company selling his content for one-forth of the price but reaching much more viewers (2nd and 1st news item).

Plus during one GSL season, you've matches every 2 days on average. So I can watch some live match during my lunch break (i'm in Europe). Now if I buy the MLG ticket, I get 20h of SC2 over one weekend. I won't spend my weekend watching SC2, so this means I'll maybe watch 4 or 5 hours of live games. The rest I'll watch as VOD, with the results being spoiled and knowing it's not live, which is must less fun imho. So I'm kind of meh about the offering. Not really about the price (20$ is like 1 movie + some beers), but I feel like it's to packed of a schedule.

Had assembly not been on i will have probably paid to watch it. I do think 20$ is too much though for 1 weekend, considering a GOMTV monthly pass is cheaper AND a higher quality of both production and game play.

You are a businessmans wet dream lol Succesfull streaming services and products on the internet, or anywhere these days, are doomed to fail if they dont provide a wide range of different options for the modern individual. People expect a modern esport service to provide a large varierty of options so that it suits the individuals needs. This new concept from MLG is outdated and it will fail in the long run.

I get what you mean and this was my first idea as well, but you have to consider that this sports bar comparison does not work right now. We are not a part of the bar and if events will continue to be expensive (and it is only a matter of time when this will get more expensive for barcrafts) there has to be a new business model because we would have to convince the bars to pay for these events and this will be quite hard, because this is sill so new and we can not guarantee a certain amount of viewers. I am doing this just for fun and want to keep it this way and i am just a bit worried that this might make it harder to establish Barcrafts but we will see.

I don't think pay walls are a good business model for the internet. Some newspapers do this and are arguably still dying when their market is people earning $50k/year not poor college students. Meanwhile free alternatives do just fine. Unless people think that they are getting good deal (e.g. steam sales) people will just turn to piracy because your market is also nerds that I'm sure if wanted to could easily find a restream somewhere. When you can go watch a stream of UFC somewhere MLG doesn't really have a chance of stopping this. I would probably pay $10 depending on how good the production is but no way am I paying $20.

OR Watch a secondary MLG event for $20 that decided to put their event on the same time as Assembly HMMMMMMMMMM If anyone does go for this PPV then consider what else you can get for it... GSL is better. Any televised PPV is immaculate with no issues or downtime, do you really think MLG can deliver that?

For $20 I would expect Tastetosis + Day9/Husky level of quality casting, not the B list... Jeah just read that they will announce casters! I was absolutly sure that they would get Tastetosis and Day9/Husky if they wont deliver this 20$ is really too much.
