Everyone complaining in this thread should be ashamed of yourselves- organisations need money to survive. Why shouldn't you, the consumer, give them some? I agree, they should offer low-quality with ads, but at the end of the day paying $20 isn't going to kill you, and if everyone did it then there would certainly be many more events to come.
I think they are rather upset about the 20 bucks than that they have to pay for it. If it had been something like $5, I bet the uproar would have been a bit quieter. Also not including the gold pass members is kind of a rip off, imo. I am not a gold member, but I still think they should get this included in their pass membership.

Nice assembly just been saved

Maybe if they had announced that it would be PPV when they announced the tournament people wouldn't be so angry. People has been hyped up about this tournament, maybe even bought MLG gold in anticipation then they get the news that they have to pay $20 to watch the tournament. It's deceptive and NONE should pay for someone trying to deceive you.

This is seeding for the main events which has 76,000$ in prizepool...also flying players around the world and paying for there hotels is slave treatment? What world do you live in?

How about the people who already have paid for mlg through the gold membership, and now have to pay again? Also, 20$ actually is big money to some people.
If everyone paid, yes, there would be many more events in the future, for which you would also have to pay. Not only MLG, but NASL, IPL, maybe even dreamhack or assembly etc. This would mean a huge drop in spectator numbers, just due to the fact that not everyone will be able to pay for each of these ppv events.

Most people just realise that this production isn't worth paying that ammount of money for. It's simply not that good entertainment. Also there are a lot of teenagers and people of lesser means that watch this game. None of them will be able to watch this.
|
If you are going to charge anywhere close to UFC prices I expect that level of production. MLG is nowhere close, and considering this event has no crowd it isn't going to even be as exciting as it could have been. Hopefully people vote with their wallets and this doesn't happen again.

So were paying 20 dollar to watch a qualifier for the main event? rofl. Tell me with how much income the average player leaves this event? Not much? who cares about travelling and hotel, when you earn less than the min. income.

On top of the high cost MLG is just unwatchable for Europeans. It always airs during the night.
And i want to watch an event live because you are bound to get spoiled anyway otherwise.

I'm not a charity and I certainly am not obligated to support anything that isn't up to my standards. YOU should be ashamed for thinking everyone who enjoys SC is in the same economic situation as you. What happens when IEM adopts this? Dreamhack? NASL? Would it still be "shameful" of me to not support all those equally?

this has to be the fastes moving thread besides some LR threads oO
but I didnt pay for nasl pass so IM definitely not going to pay for one weekend 20$ thats too much for a college student, Im a regular gsl ticket buyer although I cant watch all the matches anymore since university started and I gladly bought silver/gold membership last year, but 20$ for one weekend just seems too much. Though their reasoning with "one trip to the movie theater" sounds about right, I still dont like how they didnt announce it with the announcement of the arena itself.
€: luckily there's assembly : and although my favourite player mc is going to be at the mlg arena assembly still has a sick lineup
|
what's the big deal? just watch assembly, it's free and will also be very nice
|
The problem with this is that e-sports is still has very much a 'young-people' supporter base who are cash poor, and used to getting things for free (torrents, *cough*, torrents). What's more they haven't yet learnt the value of a dollar. I mean complaining about $20 for 20 odd hours of entertainment? I spent that going to the movies ten years ago.
$20 on a cost/hour basis stacks up very well against pretty much any other form of (legal) entertainment I partake in these days. In fact watching MLG for the entire weekend would be cheaper than doing my usual stuff.
Assembly may be free which is infinitely cheaper of course, but MLG has the players I want to see and past productions have sold me on their brand. Sign me up.
|
$20 they say? Do I have the money? Yes (for comparison sake, it's worth 3 cinema visits or 10-15 beers or dinner in quite fancy restaurant, where I live ..... although I understand they are aiming on NA scene)
Do I find such value in their offer? No.
Why? There are too many possibilities to choose from and they are considerably cheaper (so far). And IMO from spectators point of view, tournament scene is too fragmented. There are tons of events and everyone of them wants me to pay in their own way (GSL, NASL, IPL etc) and payments for watching sc2 are counting up.
What I want? What I would be willing to pay for? Give me unified streaming platform where all tournaments will be streaming and I would be able to watch whatever I want whenever I want for subscription fee (let's say $5-10/month, just semirandom number ^_^). Plus tournaments would be able to have their own extra fees for their extra content, for example. And tournament organizers would be able to share ad revenues based on their viewer number and possibilities continues (different streams/tournaments have different ads .. etc)
Too naive? Maybe. But one can dream ^_^

20 dollars is not a lot of money for me and I would gladly spend it to support MLG but I do not want to support PPV.
|
Not sure if good i try watch first think next time.

The event gives you a better chance at winning 26k for the main event. The players will gladly grab any advantage they can get.

MLG Winter Arena to be without me. Having a full PPV event is a bad idea and it is not helping esport. But 20$ is worst than anything...
If i want to watch football I turn my TV on and it is free. If I want to watch some underground sport I have to get a subscription which is not even 20$/month...
<3 Assembly.

Do you really spend less than $20 dollars per weekend on entertainment as a college student? I've been at college and poor, but I can say I spent at least that much entertaining myself every weekend.
