The comparison with other activities is a good one. You spend more than twenty dollars almost no matter what else you do. It's however not established that you can get away with having a cost this high in a field where everyone else offers lower prices and free stream alternatives. Others are able to sustain themselves mainly on ad revenue, the fact that MLG chose to raise the bar on their costs and thus feel the need to raise prices to their customers is theirs and theirs alone. It will be interesting to see whether it pays off. I'm not sure what I should wish for. I have very high doubts however that this model will works towards attracting a bigger, mainstream audience, which in the long run is what MLG needs I think. I'm a gold league member and I'm frankly a bit insulted that I have to pay full price. I became gold member under a different tournament structure, which means I could not make an informed decision on whether it was worth my money. It was not a huge cost so I might have anyway, but some form of reduced cost, at least for this initial event, would've been preferred. It's not a really big deal, just a reflection.

Lets be honest we've seen some individuals streaming at higher bitrates and resolution. Just for your Info. Some ESL-Tchguy actually stated that it's harder to have a "professional" broadcast in true HD than just a single, private, stream where you basically just need the upload + the computer that is able to do it. It gets harder when there is more Tech (cables!) involved... Still strange that some free events can bring very decent quality to the viewers and some you now have to pay for can't......

@sammathews Sam Mathews: Hey @MLG @MLGSundance @MrMLGAdam Make a $0.99 low quality stream, and $10 med quality, and 20$ high quality, and everyone will relax.

MLG is a business and it exists to make money. There's nothing wrong with making money, but don't play the 'Let's grow e-sports together" card when the obvious goal of this PPV model is to grow MLG revenue. This is probably the reason why the MLG Gold Members don't get access to this new content. The people that already have a subscription are the same group of people that are most likely to purchase a $20 dollar ticket. Getting a PPV stream does not attract new customers, it's just a way of getting more money from your current customers. Well yeah but the alternative is no MLG. They need to be self-sustained.

I couldn't even START to imagine what it would be like if there wasn't an MLG w/starcraft last year. Personally I feel GSL is a tad bit stale and boring although it provides high level games . MLG really gives me those chills that I get when I hear the crowd screaming at the top of their lungs or when there are rivalries going on carried on from the previous MLG. I'm sorry but Assembly and DH doesn't provide that kind of excitement value for me , it feels like the tournament is just a bunch of pro-gamers thrown inside and asked to play each other till the end. / off topic So about the PPV , I feel that the pricing is too damn high!. $20 for a weekend of content? Furthermore , I was looking through the entire announcement , there wasn't any mention of who is going to cast the games. From what I get , there will be a Main stream and a couple of "beta" streams , that's it. I wouldn't want to pay $20 and find out JP and Husky is casting. I feel day9 is a "must" for all MLGs , something felt amiss during the last MLG when day9 wasn't there. ummm no, starcraft 2 can make it without NA tournaments just like war3 had a competitive scene only in europe, korea and china. Starcraft 2 isn't counting on MLG to advance as an e-sport, it's just a piece of the pie

In addition, I guess that ads breaks remains? $20 + no semi final and final + Ads, not a chance...

Most of the people who don't pay for premium probably won't pay for this, especially with Assembly the same weekend, and the others will just look for a restream which will be a shitty quality AND take away from their viewership. And there WILL be restreams, as there always are. Barcrafts as well, i wonder what's MLG's policy about Barcrafts. If it's allowed, it's the place to go for free HD stream.

If streams were ads-less i could think about it, but actually, they throw at us a tons of ads and i'm okey with it because it's giving them the money to show us the event. But now, if we have ads + got to pay to see it, it will be without me. 2012 is the year where we will push eSports even further and solidify it as a legitimate sustainable business, To me, eSports is not a business, it's a passion and fun. You want to make money with this ? I totally disagree. You should only make enough money to pay everything, not making profit. I hope you'll realise you were wrong before the event (instead of after).

Even before SC2 was added, MLG hasn't been a particularly profitable business. Compare it to how few european players went to MLGs last year - that would happen for pretty much every top player from there on. That too is a possibility but it'd be death for the NA scene. Personally, I don't mind that much. The free events are still there, only now 4 instead of 6. The real issue I have is how they revealed this so close to the event + how they screwed over gold members (I'm not one). Sponsorship/ad money isn't infinite and the ROI isn't that good.

I agree but what annoys me even more is that they play the 'support e-sports card', like you need to buy a MLG ticket otherwise you don't support e-sports. That's maybe not their intention but that's how I read it and it annoys me greatly. Also their stream has always been laggy for me and now they expect me to pay for it. It's 20$ for a product that's mediocre for me personally.

Sundance twitter suggest that they barely afford to live, and without 20$ PPV weekends they would afford max 2 MLG's this year... smells like a lie to me. Since they are not a publicly traded company I think your chances of seeing anything financial out of MLG is approximately 0%. If what Sundance says is true it just makes him look like an idiot, so I really hope it is just hyperbole. Way to go stationing your business in one of the world's most expensive cities and paying for player travel that wasn't even asked for, and THEN complaining you don't have enough money.
