Starcraft doesn't really need MLG. MLG doesn't need Starcraft, They can get League of Legends, which has more viewers. Boy, if you think MLG will have a hard time getting SC2 viewers to go for PPV, how do you think that would go over in LoL? Chances are they won't have too, because Riot keeps putting up the prize money (5 million). lol, the best long-term business plan ever. drop sc2 and take LoL, LOL. as soon as LoL auits its support, which will be as soon as LoL is going into a slump, its gg MLG. nice strategy

They're offering the VODs for free a week later, so it's okay.
If my internet wasn't so shit, I could justify paying for HD streams.

MLG always has amazing tournaments, and the price for content is competitive to GSL.
$20 really is not that much money, it's barely a tank of gas or dinner for a couple.

And how do you know that that is enough money wise? You know what the cost is of flying out 32 top players in addition to venue, production (satellite trucks last year for example) and prize pool?
Ads don't cover that, and the ROI for sponsors simply isn't enough. MLG as it was in 2011 simply isn't sustainable costwise.

The price point seems too high and kind of counter-intuitive. I can say as a relatively poor student i'm not gonna pay 20 USD for one weekend of starcraft. Pretty sure in the long run a better idea would have been to start with a low price on the first ppv event so alot of people watch it, if its good more people will still buy when the price goes up. for instance they could have announced a normal price of 20 USD for arenas and then sell the first one for 5 or 10 just for the added exposure. Especially since ASUS ROG is the same weekend.

a long long time ago i posed the question....
"Will Sundance become the VInce Mcmahon of eSports?"
With MLG's last few moves it appears that question will be answered in 2012!

$20 really is not that much money, it's barely a tank of gas or dinner for a couple. What? GSL gives you roughly 3 months of content for less ($14.99 for Season Light Ticket). With better production, better players, and better casters. There is no comparison.

Starcraft doesn't really need MLG. Best post of the thread to be honest. Sundance is trying to make a quick buck off the Sc2 community it seems. Personally I feel GSL is a tad bit stale and boring although it provides high level games . MLG really gives me those chills that I get when I hear the crowd screaming at the top of their lungs or when there are rivalries going on carried on from the previous MLG. I'm sorry but Assembly and DH doesn't provide that kind of excitement value for me , it feels like the tournament is just a bunch of pro-gamers thrown inside and asked to play each other till the end. / off topic
no live crowd at winter MLG?

I got gold after the Boxer Idra games since gold was the "pay this fee and get all of our content for an entire year"-deal, and now they pull this 0day DLC thing on me...
I think I'm going to mail them and complain, if this isn't a scam I don't know what is. I'm ok with PPV at lower sums, like $5-$10 and it's probably a good idea longterm, but I'm disappointed in MLG for shafting gold members like this. Not sure if I'll keep putting any money back into them from now on unless something gets changed for the better.

From what I get , there will be a Main stream and a couple of "beta" streams , that's it. I wouldn't want to pay $20 and find out JP and Husky is casting. I feel day9 is a "must" for all MLGs , something felt amiss during the last MLG when day9 wasn't there.
Well, the Winter Arena is played without audience, so I hope you don`t expect any cheering/screaming for your 20$.

Hopefully they do and force MLG to drop SC2 from their circuit. There are other scenes that rely on them and need the prizemoney. SC2/eSports is over-saturated and doesn't need them.

I am seeing a lot of unfounded hate in this topic.
I understand that people who bought the GOLD package feel screwed, but some people need to think before they yell.
is the 20$ dollars only for those 3 days? If so.....HELL NO.
Really? That's $6,66 a day. I am willing to bet all my money people have gone to the movies for more and only got 2,5h of entertainment out of it.
Am I missing something here?

The thing is LoL keeps growing ,because it's free. Can't really say the same for SC2. ( There was a thread that saidSC2 went from 2 million players playing to 700k)

$20 really is not that much money, it's barely a tank of gas or dinner for a couple. why are you comparing it to random things. compare to other sc2 stuff that require payment. Nowhere near gsl lol u see hwo many content u get for 15$??? or maybe u racist ..

Thanks, but no, thanks.
I'm not exactly the target audience for such things though. Some rich young men might pay. I get the same quality of games when I play on the ladder, well, slightly worse, but only slightly. It is not quite as good as the GSL, which is, in fact, free to watch.

I especially dislike the last sentence of the announcement:
a required step in furthering the growth and success of eSports.
Charging $20 for a weekend of SC2 has nothing to do with growing e-sports, it just a pilot to test a new way of creating income for MLG. MLG is a business and it exists to make money. There's nothing wrong with making money, but don't play the 'Let's grow e-sports together" card when the obvious goal of this PPV model is to grow MLG revenue.
This is probably the reason why the MLG Gold Members don't get access to this new content. The people that already have a subscription are the same group of people that are most likely to purchase a $20 dollar ticket. Getting a PPV stream does not attract new customers, it's just a way of getting more money from your current customers.

Wow, selfish... Have u seen the prizemoney? 20 bucks per viewer for this prize money? rofl. even the players themselves seem to get treated like slaves by MLG. This is seeding for the main events which has 76,000$ in prizepool...also flying players around the world and paying for there hotels is slave treatment? What world do you live in? So were paying 20 dollar to watch a qualifier for the main event? rofl. Tell me with how much income the average player leaves this event? Not much? who cares about travelling and hotel, when you earn less than the min. income. The event gives you a better chance at winning 26k for the main event. The players will gladly grab any advantage they can get. Please stop talking about the main event. We are paying 20 dollars (if we wanna watch it) for this arena. dont come with prizemoney from other tourneys. MLG says they wanna make profit. and they charge us 20 dollars for this event. If i pay 20 dollars i want a huge chunk of it to go to the main characters which are the players (NO, not the casters, ffs..). And watching the prize money, its just ridiculous, ans they surely wont get my 20 dollars if they want profit for themselves, but dont give ANY of it to the players. you actually think MLG is making a profit out of this? rofl of course they are making a profit. if they didnt they would go out of business. You really just don't understand how start ups work. Don't spew misinformation. MLG has been using investor capital since its inception. Investors invest now in the hopes that MLG becomes profitable in the future. MLG has not historically been a profitable company. Investors feel that it will develop into a profitable company, but it hasn't yet.
