Activision is currently pumping up how "great" Call of Duty is and how it's the savoir of the industry. The conference call isn't for you, it's for shareholders. Shareholders couldn't care less about the quality of games, just the bottom line. Congratulations, you've just summed up the problem with the games industry, and society as a whole right now.

A typical animated feature film (and I've worked on a few, so I know) records voices as long as two to three years before release. It takes a LONG TIME to do all the character animation that requires that voice recording as a starting point. Game cinematics are the same.
As for the guy who commented on "whipping out a campaign," here are some things they have to do that you may not have thought about:
* Writing/rewriting the story.
* Voice recording.
* Animation, lighting, and developing art assets for the in-game cinematics.
* Production of pre-rendered cinematics.
* Repeating the last four.
* Game systems software development to support new units and game mechanics.
* Game design for new units and game mechanics.
* Art design for new units and game mechanics.
* Playtesting of new units and game mechanics.
* Repeat the previous four *over and over*.
* Branching and stabilizing the code for a beta test.
* Branching and stabilizing the code for demos at this or that convention.
* Game design for campaign levels.
* Art design for campaign levels.
* Playtesting campaign levels.
And that's just the game development.

To compete with Cross Fire, which is INSANELY popular in China.

They had a lot to show back at Blizzcon, its half a year later and they say one year isn't enough to release it? Jesus... Cause they realized just how broken every unit they demoed was and now have to completely redesign them to not destroy what little balance there is I could understand if this was the case.
More importantly: I could understand if they wanted to redesign some aspects of the game like they did in TFT by revamping the entire armor system. I'm looking at protoss naturally, break the fucking deathball already and re-balance warpgates as an option instead of just always being superior.
If they release HOTS in 2013 and it brings nothing but a handful of new units, I won't be impressed.

At least their pace in creating patch content hasn't increased so I wouldn't expect an expansion to come any faster either. So D3, HotS during 2012 with possibly Pandaria coming too. Dragon Soul is the last raid of Cata Blizz wont leave them alone with that content for a whole year
They did it with ICC, but aparently they want more frequent content patches and expansions now, but honestly i can't see that happening

China has crazy potential at the moment, especially for (relatively) low graphics, highly accessible games.

Blizzard has stated themselves that they are doing expansions every 1.5 years now instead of 2 years.
That would put the expansion during/end of summer 2012.

BT lasted a solid year or more at the end of Burning Crusade before they released Sunwell to tide people over.
ICC lasted a solid year at the end of Wrath.
So yes, they very well might leave people farming Dragon Soul for a solid year.

Oh also, if anyone could clearly update anything of importance regarding Starcraft if they get to it, I would thank you. I can't listen to the call right now.

Diablo 3: "Targeting Q2 launch" sigh

tagetting Q2 = Q4 maybe.
/sigh
if guild wars 2 hits before d3, it may be hard to justify splitting my precious 'casual' gaming time. My hardcore time already goes to dota2.

No they said they planned on releasing the new expansions 18 months apart about, not 8 months. But if you think it would be even 18 months you are silly
