Hi all,
I wrote this program to remind myself to watch minimap because it is a big sticking point for me. Maybe it will help someone else. I'm sure there are others out there.
The only thing it does is play a wave file every xxxx miliseconds. The wave file bundled with the executable just says "map" but you can use your own. If I add anything else to the program it will probably be volume control.
I also added the source if anyone wants to modify it.
Cheers.
edit: ravemir posted that I uploaded the debug version and not the release so the following link is now the release build. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35896399/MapReminderv1.exe

That's actually pretty helpful! I want to point out that this little app will also be helpful to LoL/Dota players as well
|
Oh man Ive been waiting for something like this! Great stuff, thanks!
|
Every time i try to open it i get "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Pleast see the application even log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool from more detail.

Thank god! I was waiting for someone to come out with another program that will make me think I'm improving

lol , "will make me feel like i'm improving " , was that sarcasm stroph? :-P , Nice program, although I think it just will make you watching mini map less effective if you start using it, do you plan on using this forever? Knowing to naturally look at the mini map is better. Really nice program and nice contribution to the community for those who want to just use it for awhile to improve this sort of thing.

Alright so the best way to actually start learning to look at the minimap is turning off the sound. You'll lose the first few games to silly drops but because you're forced to use your eyes to find incoming danger to react to it you have to use the minimap.
Looking at the minimap isn't like injecting or something. It's something that you actually unconsiously have to do.
Glad you're helping the community out though, hope people will get better with it

Playing like 1 out of 10 games with sound off will improve your minimap awareness bigtime. Though im sure this application is helpful too :D
|
Some may say that this won't help them, but I think it's a lot like the metronome idea when you practice a musical instrument. Obviously, when you perform, you don't want to have the metronome on. But when you practice, especially as a beginner, it helps you to develop correct habits. I wanna try this out. Excellent idea and props to you for making it happen! :D

I'm not sure if the program will do more damage than good. I just watch the minimap very little now. I figure this could help

you are probably missing .NET 2.0 or something

Idk if this is really the best bet for minimap awareness. I think you should just play lots and consciously focus on watching the minimap even if it means you sacrifice other aspects of your gameplay just to improve on that one point. Then eventually you will be able to multitask better.
|
Something that improved my minimap awareness immensely was teamgames. 3v3 and 4v4 requires quite a bit of minimap checking to have any clue what's happening. It's quite fun as well.

Things like this are really useful, thanks for posting this.
I remember back when me and my friend used to play bw for fun I made just a file that played a piano riff and said "Spam units" and looped it for my friend to help him remember to macro.
|
Well you can just turn off the sound for better minimap awareness because i turned off sound for sc2 after i just got annoyed by it and now i check the minimap by instinct. And i didnt turn off the sound so i could focus on the minimap, it just happened by coincidence really

you are a baller sir
Edit : yeah I get the same problem too : Every time i try to open it i get "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Pleast see the application even log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool from more detail.
Edit2: I have all the C++ redistributables updated and here's the event log :
"Activation context generation failed for "C:\Users\Alexandre Desjardins\Desktop\MapReminderv1.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.DebugCRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis."
|
You should make it a wave file saying "MAKE WORKERS AND SUPPLY" :D
|
Thanks, I will probably not use it but I can see many people finding it useful.
I wonder if we will get the same¨is it cheating or not?¨ debate every time something like this pops up
|
Very nice program man , little stuff like this can be very handy for the newer players
|
Playing this with it set to 500 ms makes me feel Korean,
