Blizzard released a news concerning the close end of the season 4. As usual the league promotions will be locked. Nothing new on the horizon but i hope the Grandmaster issues will be solved next season.
The Season 4 lock also means that Season 5 is right around the corner. During the week of December 20, Season 4 will end and Season 5 will begin. Season milestone rewards will be locked in at this time, and bonus pools will start over. Hidden skill ratings used for matchmaking and league placement will carry over from the previous season, so if you've completed placement matches in a previous season you will only need to play one new placement match after Season 5 starts.

Mine have been increasing through seasons because I'm getting better. I guess I'd rather just play starcraft instead of watch other people play it.

It says "a" previous season, does that mean that what I've heard about MMR resetting if you skip an entire season completely (for each ladder) isn't correct? I heard it happened to one of Tyler's accounts, and some other people. In addition, I believe it just happened to me and a friends' 2v2 team. We were in masters league a couple of seasons ago, but didn't play any last season. This season we had to play all five placement matches again, and we certainly didn't play any masters level 2v2 teams.
Does anyone know anything about that? So far all I've seen about the MMR reset for the 1v1 ladder i anecdotal.

When finals are over I am going to try and get rid of my bonus pool before the season ends, it is about 300 right now >.<
Hopefully if I can do that with lots of wins I can get promoted for next season.

It's true, a friend of mine stop playing starcraft a few months ago and came back at the beginning of november with 5 placements matches and was ranked 80th in a silver division (he was platine before). He didn't play at all (not even one game) last season.
Btw, i hope they'll show some creativity and change de map pool this time, i was very disappointed last season :'(

I think if they are gonna keep this length of season they are going to need to make the map pool rotate a lot and maybe add more maps to the ladder.

He might be a terran player, I've noticed the new trend is on the forums terran players crying about maps they can't do horrible 1base rush builds on :D

I would love to see an actual macro map (antiga and TDA are fine... but XNC/Metal need to go) from GSL (DAYBREAK ?????) or even Calm Before the Storm. I know for a fact they need to dump Abyssal Caverns though, that map is horrid.

Wish they would throw in some unusual maps like an island map or a map where people are totally blocked from each other with destructible rocks. Some weird maps which are a throw back to WarCraft 2 days like Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide.

Season length has also been dramatically dropping. However, it seems that this new season length (2 months) will be standard.

I skipped this whole season because of school *shakes fist at infinite school work*. If it's true that MMR gets reset for being inactive for a whole season, that's going to suck x(.
I know for a fact that MMR decreases with inactivity, so either way, I think my MMR is not at a mid-high Diamond level anymore for sure.

This map pool is the best it's been since SC2 was released but is that really saying much considering all the fucking terrible maps it used to have? Thats like saying the shit I took today was better then the shit I took yesterday. Either way, it's shit.
I don't get why blizzard just doesnt put in some of the GSL maps, what is holding them back from doing this?

Well, you haven't skipped the whole season yet! Play one (1) placement match! you could even worker rush and throw the game, but it'll cause your Season 3 MMR to be carried over into Season 4, which means it can carry over to Season 5; the loss of MMR from losing one game is trivial.

This one is better but I still don't really care for XNC or even Metal at all. I mean I've been playing them for a year now. Don't eliminate vetoes- eliminate bad or old maps. All this season did for me was let me finally allocate my vetoes to enough maps that I didn't have to outright play bad/old ones.

If they finally add some more GSL maps I'm fine with new season, plus I really like that season lock is only 1 week now. On the other hand if they don't it's just one pointless week combined with a pointless point reset.
Daybreak would be really, really awesome. Maybe even calm before the storm, bronze scrups can still veto it.

This season sucked for me =/ My PC was broken for a little over 4 weeks, so I didn't have time to play really.
Luckily I was still able to play my placement matches and get Masters in EU and NA, but man, I was shooting for top 8.
Oh well, at least season 5 is right around the corner!

2months ago everyone praised that this is the greatest map pool in the history of the game. Played a lot early season and for some reason stopped almost completely after making it to masters. Tbh the 2month season felt way too quick...

lol the map pool this season has been awesome. They brought back metal, got rid of some of those kind of bad ones, and less maps means a lot more practice on each map. Id like to see a couple GSL maps brought over like Terminus or Bel'Shir Beach, but come on.

This is TL. Nobody is ever happy with the map pool, even if it's ripped straight from the GSL.

I play more because when I watch pros play it makes me want to play more than ever. The skillcap is the highest it's ever been and it's only going up -- for a while (first 6 months of sc2, if not 7 or 8 months) SC2 had a fairly low skillcap and was a lot dumb strats. Now it's evolved past all-ins being everything, and there's a lot of skill, macro, micro, strategy, decisions, speed/etc. to be good at.
it's awesomely fun and I have like 180 1v1s played this season. I had like 15 played last season -- the map pool is also where I can actually PLAY the game. I can SEARCH a game knowing it won't be a 33% chance of free loss if we get close spawn zvt LT/metalop.

What issues? People who are the best at ladder should be there. If you only play customs you should not expect to be there. Now, remember that being the best in the ladder does not mean to be the best in the game/region.

No...that's not the problem, the problem is that it let anyone even close to that level into GM as soon as the lock on GM was lifted, so better ladder players that didn't play at 00:01 were shafted. The people who are best at ladder weren't there, and that's what the problem was.

that's what i'm saying. the map pool could be a little better (no xel naga caverns, no abyssal, no gold expos), but it's SO playable now compared to what it was.

I've been swamped with school this season and haven't had the time to do my placements. Would I still be doing one placement next season or would I be dropped from the ladder altogether and have to do a fresh five? Kinda confused since the wording of the Blizzard release says "previous season".

I'm in the same boat. It's like, "what? Season 4 just started!" But then again, I have been doing a crap load of school lately.

I've been going up and down in # played per season, but lately I've really been wanting to ladder on tournament maps. It just feels more real to play the same maps as the pros.

basically the same ratio, only went down because the season is shorter.

I think GSL maps in the map pool are going to be very nice... Will make for some interesting play. I don't think all the ladder maps should be removed, but Nerazim and Abyssal aren't the best for laddering.

I really hope they just pull most of the maps and put in GSL maps, or even switching the old maps with the new tile sets WCG has because it's refreshing to play on something that looks different ^_^

I second this. Every once in awhile I un-veto it. That doesn't last very long. I like the idea of having a map that has a circular feel...but with the inability to move through the middle, the super-exposed mains, and the destructible rocks limiting mobility, there are just too many weird factors on this map to make it work for me.

I actually recognized the people at the top of my division who managed to stay competitive. That was interesting, but also disheartening that promotion seems so much harder.

Xel'naga, Abyssal and Nezarim need to go. Metal and Shattered as well, they're not as bad though.
I really hope they make some sort of update of the map pool, the TLMC maps haven't been tested enough yet so I don't think they'll come this season...just put Daybreak in. Pretty please, Blizzard?

I just hope Blizzard watches the TL map contest open and decides to use some community made maps and maybe some more GSL maps for next season. Would be really nice to have a larger map pool, maybe 20 maps and less of the gold bases and destructible rocks.

I think that the end of Season 5 or 6 will also coincide with the beta release, and then everybody who is partially anybody switches over and we all are happy because it's actually a completely balanced game besides the shredder which is incredibly OP based upon trailers and personal experience. Run-on sentences FTW.
Also, I could get into Diamond by Tuesday, but there's a few problems called sleep, school, and food. Otherwise, it would be entirely possible.

I'm hoping they remove XNC, Metalopolis and Shakuras. They have been in the map pool for way too long. They need to replace those with Dual sight, Crevasse and Belshir Beach (with a ramp)

Shattered and Meta should just gtfo of. GSL doesn't use Crevasse since August anymore, for a good reason. Dualsight is easily the worst gsl map in their pool atm.
I agree with daybreak though.
I pray they remove the two shitty maps left and xel naga, so I can veto meta and shattered.

Gah, been too busy with work and boxing to log in as many SC2 hours as I wanted this season (only 50 games on NA and 30 games on SEA - for a total of 41 wins). There go my hopes of making Platinum this season - Season 5, I guess. I hope it's 3 months though. 2 months feels too small.

I don't see why some people don't like that they are doing the new seasons so quickly. I mean, your MMR stays the same and your progress towards portraits/achievements stays the same. All it really does is allow people who maybe weren't very active early on in the season to have a fighting chance at the top ranks.

Yeah the only thing you don't get is promotions; and if you keep playing during the lock your MMR still rises and you will be promoted faster when Season 5 starts, or even after the placement match.

i quit playing ladder almost 2 seasons ago, first reaching plat, second reaching diamond, third staying in diamond. after that, i just lost interest in playing ladder. i felt most of the people were playing cheesy, and instead of having fun i was pissed and angry, so i quit. in the past two seasons i just played custom-games with the random people you find on them, mostly on shattered and xnc being the two most played. i switched race from protoss to zerg cause i didn't find P fun anymore, now i'm total scrub with Z even if i play it since 2 months ago but i don't care if i'll be place in gold (most probably the league i feel i will end at the beginning). next season i will start playing ladder once again as Z as main race but i won't deny a few games as P or T, just for the sake of fun.

EU server has not been locked. It was supposed to be locked Tuesday, December 13 at 13:30 CET but at least 17:30 CET (20 minutes ago) the bonus pool was still increasing.
US server was locked December 13 at 4:30 AM PST as scheduled.
(4:30 AM PST == 13:30 CET. Both servers were supposed to be locked at same time)

If I recall correctly, patch changes and ladder resets usually fall on a Tuesday, so I think it'll be tomorrow.
Not 100% sure though, and I don't think they gave the *exact* day (only saying it will be *around tomorrow*) just so we don't all rebel if it doesn't happen for some reason.

Yes SEA will reset earlier. the reset occurs around 6-7am on tuesday. it is currently around 4am in singapore so the update will occur anytime in the next couple of hours

I don't think thats true. The way they achieve 50% W/L ratio (or try to achieve) is by matching you against higher leveled players if your win rate is above 50% and lower leveled players if your win rate is below 50%. If you play enough games you should theoretically be getting matched up against players at your level, so you win about half your matches. I don't think map and race have anything to do with it.

I don't agree with that at all.. you have 3 vetoes to use for the maps that you feel are imbalanced for your "race" or whatever. You play at 50% if you are around the MMR that is generally compatible with your skill level. If you lose more, you play worse players and if you win more you play better players. It's as simple as that. You shouldn't be "losing motivation" on ladder for going 50% W/L ratio. You should look at your league and measure yourself by how far you have come since you started playing.

Been a frigging terrible season for me, season 3 I was top 10 in my gold division consistently whereas season 4 I dropped down to around 40. I think the players in lower division have gotten better.
Also, first day of season 4, I'm pretty sure most of the players I was playing were smurf accounts.

1st and 2nd seazon i was mid master, then my final exams come also end of my study and master-engineer degree defense. I didnt play almost anything in season 3 and I dropped to diamond, but I was still out of shape so in season 4 I was platinum for a long time, but right before lock I manage to get to diamond. Now ill try to get to masters again but its very hard.

I'm a low league diamond since release with 981 league wins (~600 1v1) and ~850 custom 1v1 games. It's not from a lack of fucking trying to get Masters I promise you. I have a shit pc so I run at 4-6 fps in the late game but still I'm just not very good. I'm glad you are though. Us lower league guys play the game the same way you do just not as well.

Sry, didn't mean to be bm. Also it's not about that you are good or not, in ladder it's mostly about defending cheeses. Also I have played BW for years, so it wasn't really new for me, I guess that helps a lot.

I think BW experience helps a lot, but I don't know personally. SC2 is the first RTS I've ever played. I played my first ~100 or so games not even knowing the word "hot key" existed. I didn't have typing classes in school so even when I did learn about hotkeys I had to look down at my keyboard for a long time to find the right keys lol T.T; I think my pc is a problem too though. Its pretty impossible to micro late game at the 4-6 fps I play at and I really feel like unit control starts to matter in upper diamond/low masters where I'm playing at now.

Hopefully this season I will be more consistent. I would go on great winning streaks against higher league players, but I would also go on some bad losing streaks to lower league players aswell. FInished off in the top 30 in gold league.

Not only they've improved, but you forget this - with every season more and more of the worse players stop playing - they get demotivated, disappointed, etc. etc. As for the smurf accounts, I don't know.

But do you honestly think he's rank 40 because of that reason? There's a huge misconception in the lower leagues that rank = skill. I've seen posts like "I was rank 1 silver and now I got promoted into gold and I'm rank 50?!?! Wtf is that?" If people use up all their bonus pool, they should be at least top 25 in a competitive league.

Yah I guess that's true, but you have to admit that in Master or especially in GM the rank difference means a lot. Not like rank 1 is 100% sure better than rank 8, but when it comes to 50 rank differences, than it's true. I mean some random guy in gm at top 200 isn't that good like someone in top 16, for sure.

In master league everyone goes by points or sc2ranks overall ranks, divisions are totally meaningless.

Seriously, there were some divisions last Season where ~900 points could get you in the top 5 and others where 900 points wouldn't even get you in the top 30.
