we've all seen flash pull out the maphacks and scan invisible obs right on the spot. but that was in BW. Is it still feasible to spot invisible units without detection? 1. what graphic setting is best for detecting invisible units? 2. which units are the easiest to spot and when? for example dts are much easier to spot moving than standing still 3. in tournament games, have you seen a player scan the obs and kill it w/o detection? dts are much easier to see, but I have yet to see a player spot the obs 4. is it even worth it to use a scan on the obs? mules bring in roughly 300 if I'm correct and obs cost about half of that
|
banshees/dts are super easy for me roaches/infestors kind of tough, i have no tricks observers i normally scroll down my mouse wheel super quick just to double check (helps against stagnant obs)
|
1. Graphics all on low, but effects on high is what I heard helps best 2.as long as its moving I pretty much see them all about the same 3.yea all the time 4.and yes the info the other player is getting can be worth A LOT more then simply the cost of and obs or mule
|
1. Low 2. Don't know most of them are easy if you're paying attention but hard when you're not 3. Yeah. 4. Don't know for certain but if you know he is building colossi it is probably a good idea as he might remake his obs.
Hey read this thread you should put your question there instead of making a new thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=187808

Sure, it's done quite frequently 1. I think somebody said it's everything to low, textures to high/ultra and shaders to mid, but that might be a myth 2. As far as I'm aware, all the units are equally hard/easy to spot - maybe dt's are easier because they can't fly (spotting burrowed units is significantly harder though) 3. Yeah, quite often actually. 4. Depends if you think it's important to deny scouting / use up robo time (an observer being made takes the spot of a collossus/immortal...) Generally it's worth it I think (though I'm no expert).

Killing the Observer is better almost all the time, because you're denying your opponent vital scouting information and you can possibly force them to make another one. Gas and robotics build time are normally important for Protoss.

obs costs gas, robo build time and makes toss blind for quite some time, so depeding on the situation it is most of the time worth it.

That trick is an old TLO thing, and the effect he was talking about is no longer there.
|
Just go low gfx settings. That's what works for me.
|
Low graphics. They are all easy to see, just need to be watching the right spot. Always scan to kill observers unless you want toss to have perfect arc in all your engagements.
|
For sure highest gfx is easiest to see, lowest is hardest. Not sure about specifics(different options to change) but the second post sounds pretty accurate
|
Turn texture quality to high, and all other graphics low.
|
i have no problem with detecting cloaked units, event with ultra settings
|
Settings on low, and as long as they are moving I spot them every time.
|
if you need confirmation about spotting an obs, you an mousewheel your camera to zoom in, the obs will move along with the camera
|
I think burrow movement is really difficult to spot. Maybe its cause we're not used to it yet.. but unless you see them burrow, its really hard to neutrally spot them.
|
Think it was already mentioned, but everything on low and textures as high as you cat get it is easiest
|
I play on low graphics but with ultra textures and medium effects... i can see DTs and cloak banshee easily.
|
I think it really depends on what you're accustomed too, I used to think low was the way to go to spot them but I've seen players like Drewbie and SeleCT spot and scan observers instantly and I know Drewbie plays on pretty high settings, I've seen him sometime quickly scroll and zoom in before scanning if he has the time, just to make sure.

agreed, DTs, banshees, as well as everything under a mothership (its a huge blob of distorted stuff under that mothership! I wonder what it might be?) are really easy to spot on any quality, but in my opinion obs are a lot harder for two reasons: 1. it's small 2. it's flying so it can "hide" its distortion in places where you are not used to looking, for example on a cliff, its a lot more difficult to find that "that cliff is distorted!" than "the ground is moving!"
and I have heard low quality everything and texture quality being disputed
|
I think we can all agree that Visine will help you spot invisible units.
|
|
Honestly I have everything on ultra and I can see observers quite easily. It could just be me however because when I play Protoss my observers never seem to get scanned. When I'm playing TvP however I'll almost always spot the observer.
|
i know BoxeR uses the mouse scroll wheel up and down to see observers to scan and kill...thats the best way i know of
|
A lot of experience in the game is the most important factor in spotting them. You basically want to know how terrain "should" look. When you see an anaomoly, there is a cloaked unit there.
I haven't seen much difference in helping spot this with different graphical setting. I'm not certain if you can spot burrowed units this way either.
Scanning an observer to kill it is situational. It depends on what units you want to use (banshees for example, how much income you have (is the mule really that important to have at this moment?) and whether the opponent getting scouting information is pivotal (you don't want your opponent see you pushing out or taking a hidden expo).

How does this work?

U just use the scroll wheel on your mouse back and forth quickly to zoom in /out...when for instance you view your army (cuz its usually there).....
|
i feel like people calling out graphics settings should back it up with a screenshot so we don't keep fueling rumors.
|
I play on all low (no choice) and i can spot invisible units pretty easy. Generally its just a blur so i guess all low everything?

Ah yes! That is a great technique for doing this!

low graphics for everything except make ur texture setting ultra
|
Obs and dt's cloaked look the same to me, I don't know whether to shit my pants or to not shit my pants.
|
I'm amazed no one has made picture comparisons on various settings to settle this question once and for all.
You'd think easiest visibility for cloaked units would be kind of a big deal.
|
TLO has said that if you have everything on low and textures on ultra/high then it is easier to see and that's what I use
and I can spot shit most of the time.
You can also just assume things like if you're fighting a protoss chances are he has an obs right over your army so a random scan won't hurt
|
Scroll in and out, you can spot invisible units even if they stand still.
|
Here are some screenshots of cloaked units on different graphics settings. The texture quality and graphics quality are set to said screenshot except for custom.
All cloaked/burrowed units except mothership are present in the pictures. They are all lined up and its very hard to tell, but there is a slight blur for the cloaked units. To start, the cloaked banshee is to the right of the stargate, and the observer right next to that. All other units fall right underneath those. You can't tell the difference with burrowed roach and infestor. Fullscreen the pictures or you won't be able to see anything.
Low + Show Spoiler +
Medium + Show Spoiler +
High + Show Spoiler +
Ultra + Show Spoiler +
Custom (Low texture quality, High shader, Ultra lighting, Medium shadow, everything else low/off.) + Show Spoiler +
Out of all the settings, I found my custom to be the easiest to spot the units. Something about lighting really has an effect on the visibility of cloaked units. I haven't tested this on any other map tileset, but its a start.
|
Unless you are looking for it, things that are moving while burrowed are really hard to spot. But if you know that they are doing it, the ground changes slightly underneath. I don't know if a burrowed unit that doesn't move makes any difference.

I really couldn't see any of those at all...
Edit: I saw the banshee! Only when I fullscreened the custom settings one and zoomed in even further...

i play on medium and have never missed an observer. I feel they are all pretty ez to notice.

Burrow units make a dark patch and kick up dust when they move. Its actually really easy to spot once you know what your looking for.
|
Well, with banshees, if you're seeing them when they're cloaked, but not moving or attacking, something is wrong.
Roaches or infestors, they're harder because they can't automatically attack and give themselves away, but if your eyes are scanning between the minimap and the entrance to your nat, then they are really easy to see.
Observers, well, you sometimes get lucky. I have no idea how pros do it, but I'm guessing they're just used to seeing observers and recognizing the blur. Also, isn't that why zergs are starting to just put random spores around their tech buildings whenever they have money? It isn't extremely common, but it's a good idea.
But when you're looking at a deathball, it is pretty easy to see where the obsv is. It's just that you are looking directly at it and not worrying about injects at the same time. Usually, because for some reason the deathballs always come in the middle of a production cycle.

Insert/Delete works pretty well.

ok i've just changed all to Low (textures high) and everything looks clearer even game runs smoother, have one big problem with it, FF look horrible i just cant stand it (and its even hard to see it -.-) is there a command or something i could add to txt file to change graphic of forcefields so everything else stays on low ?

go to my documents/starcraft II/variables.txt
and make sure these 2 lines are there:
simplifiedCloaking=0 simplifiedShaders=0
you will notice cloaked units/force fields way better.

Im wondering...Can you spot burrow moving units?

You can but you almost have to know that they are there and pay CLOSE attention. Its really not feasible to see them just as you would a cloaked unit running by.
