Yes they could have played out the group play but still group play doesn't really matter (apart from getting money for placing 1st and 2nd) and with no internet they couldn't have streamed anything anyway. From the spectators perspective there wouldn't have been any gain in having a LAN mode.
Again. They had internet. It was fine to stream. It was terrible to try and play on. LAN mode allows them to play games in playable conditions and carry the stream.

and even _if_ the internet went down as a whole. they could have played the games and broadcasted the matches today before the first games

Thank you for the response, it is such a shame that these things happens, I just hope you will be able to get it fixed. You guys are doing a great job, and I have to say that when the stream runs properly, it is the best stream (yes better than MLG, GOMTV, DH etc).

even if they couldnt stream, on a lan mode they could play and record the games, and just restream them later. as seen by the group 'fiasco' players coming in from 10 time zones cant sit around for 8 hours. they could of played their games then gone to bed. people on a more normal sleep shedule could and did stay up till the internet was fixed, but then there was still less games to see.
blizzard not selling a lan capable client to major tournament organisers is becoming more and more depressing and embarrassing. this really is hurting esports. theres no argument against it ;/

The argument against it is that Blizzard wants control. Unfortunately this control is beginning to hinder e-sports. If e-sports was on TV you wouldn't expect people to understand that when a truck hits a utility pole it totally destroys the tournament because there no LAN option. I don't think any channel would ever pick up SC2 again until it had LAN support if that happened.

they can keep control through broadcast contracts, they dont need the client to do that

Well, someone on reddit said they are using liveu.tv, which apparently can use several cellular uplinks simultaneously. So yeah, I think they can stream pretty well.

Can you link to a source where Blizzard says that? because it's a bs reason, LAN for tournaments doesn't change anything about the control Blizzard has over a tournament if they even want any.

Not having LAN proves that all SC2 games are played over their client and network, hence they are in possession of all files (derivative works, if I remember the term correctly). This includes replays, and so on.
You can't stream league games in Korea without making use of their "intellectual property". They are going beyond broadcasting rights, because with LAN, you could try to argue that Blizzard has no hand in creating those products (broadcasted games).
