there was 1 byoc each day at the summer tournament if i recall, day 2 & 3 winners got qualified for winter, the top 2 the first day got into the main tourney.

Its great to see top8 receiving prize money. While still not as good as the standards some tournaments like NASL and even greatly IPL are trying to set, it is much better than dreamhack's previous top4 only.

Well, if there would be a BYOC qualifier, I'd expect it to be really hard as well. I'm thinking of something akin to the MLG Open Bracket. That said, it would be 10 000 times more fun to play the qualifier on location!

The players already all get invited, by which I understand they don't have to pay an entry fee (which differs from poker what you are talking about), So that they only get paid if the finish in the top 8, seems more then fare to me.

Actually I don't expect Incontrol to get an invite its a Swedish tournament so all the Swedish top players will attend together with the top Europeans and the very top NA. There is only 42 spots and Im sure atleast 10 will be koreans

Not as good as showing it right on TV, but it's nice one of your main TV stations is recognizing and broadcasting SC2 in some way or another .

in germany they aired the EPS in full-lenght on german television just recently but the germans dont make a big deal out of it as it seems.swedes want you to know what they have in every thread and dont forget the good internet!
super epic event but i'm curious how moon will perform, he shouldn't be in a good shape, since he will be playing wc3 most of the time for the wcg in december, or not? I'd really love to see him grab another top8 spot or better in an big tourney, but this is a really bad timing for him well it will be great to watch anyways, DH is awesome!
I think it will be an amazing event, but I feel as if theyr too invite heavy at the moment. Its really hard to get new players coming through when tournaments become invite focussed sometimes. Still, big names are cool too I guess, gives the people what they want
The previous Dreamhack had the best international line-up out of all SC2 tournaments. It actually looks like this one could get an even stronger line-up.
I really hope some of the Swedes in Korea will temporarily go back home in order to participate. Players such as Sase, Sjow, Naniwa and Jinro.
Would also be nice if some more unknown local players who are put their hearts into becoming professional SC2 players got a chance. Such as Cytoplasm or Stjarnan.

Poker tournaments normally pay out to top 10%, this is 12,5%. (And they have a buy-in.)
There is nothing wrong with this payout structure imo. I think it has a positive influence on the best players in the world to come, and in that way we will have better games to watch.

Even if there were no invites, the people that have been invited would make it to the top anyways so you might as well just invite them knowing that they will accept, rather then making them climb through a pile of games they will most likely win anyways.
Also I feel that doing it this way a up and comer has a better shot of making a name for himself and showing people what he/she may be capable of.
IE: Unknown player shows up to tourney, has amazing skill and an opportunity to show that, only problem now is DRG wasn't an invite and is Unknown's first opponent.

Yeah, DH Summer 2011 had Bomber, MC, July, Moon attending and DH Winter 2010 had oGs_TOP and oGs_InCa attending. With HuK winning DH Summer 2011 and Naama winning DH Winter 2010.

Being pride of ones group-membership, wheter there is being a guy, a swede, a sc2-fan or a christian is only natural for humans. People like when other people have something i common, or when another person have something they can identify with, and there's absolutly nothing wrong with that. The error happens when people start flaming people of other groups (such in this example: a norwegian, a girl, a halo-player and a muslim) just based one their membership of other groups. Obviouly thats bad. Point being: Let the man root for his fellow countrymen, nothing bad in being proud of what you are/where you come from etc in itself

You cant honestly imagine DH will be footing the bill for 64+ however many other events like LoL they might be having flights to Sweden do you? My head might actually explode if they were, in a good way of course, but it seems awful unlikely. Maybe we need another Marineking reddit!

I agree with you that for a BYOC tournament I wouldn't payout to that many players (see MLG open bracket example from previous post, for instance). However, you do make a good point that if a tournament is 100% invitational there should be a larger % of players that get paid. I think most would agree that at least the 2nd place should have been paid in that tournament. IMO this tournament will have 64 good players, 32 really good players, 16 excellent players, and 8 great ones. Should the "excellent" players not get paid anything (I know this is a generalization, but you get the point)? I just think a larger spread of prize money creates more opportunites for players to actually do this as a profession. Right now if you aren't on a top team with a salary then you're either a slave in korea or a player outside of Korea that plays for "fun" and any money is just an added bonus.

There is nothing wrong with this payout structure imo. I think it has a positive influence on the best players in the world to come, and in that way we will have better games to watch.
They have a "buy-in", the tournament fee gets them 22 950 sek. That money might pay for half a printed banner, but still.

It seems surprising that you still don't get anything if you survive 2 group stages. In normal formats 8/64 paid sounds fine, but it feels like 16 paid would've suited better in this situation. Also there's no 3rd place match? That's a bit weird. Also wasting 2days to get it 64->16 and then one day for rest of it seems rushing it. Will be real shame if ro16 and maybe ro8 are bo3s.

Looking forward to another great tournament and amazing streams/game coverage. DH truly have set the standard in streaming games (except for Valencia, but that wasn't DH's fault at all and was only a problem for certain europeans) in the past and we all expect this to be no less awesome!

But Dreamhack is paying out a specific amount of SEK, NOT a specific amount of $ or £ or whatever else you want to convert it to. If the prize is x amount of SEK and they put up a $ value also, and then for some reason the exchange rates change significantly between now and the event then the $ amount is no longer accurate. It should be obvious to people reading that the $ value would be dependant on exchange rates but it could confuse a lot of people if they saw $x in pre-event hype but only $y in the end

I hope he doesn't. If we see the previous DH tournaments there are not a lot of Americans invited. This will probably be the same this tournament. iNcontroL is not someone who deserves in invitation for his recent accomplishments.
I like the guy, he is funny to listen to, but that is about it. iNcontroL is not on the top of his game and can't compete with the best. I'd rather have someone else from the USA (Only Europeans and Koreans is good enough for me, but I can understand that DH will invite some Americans to please those fans.)
I love all of these tournaments, MLG, DH etc... just so awesome to be able to tune in to some great games basically anytime I want for a whole weekend.

When you feel proud of a countryman doing well, it's not because of the fact they are born in within the borders of the country. Countries aren't the lands and borders, it's the people within them. Because people of the same country share certain cultural and social customs and ideas, not to mention a common language, it can make you feel proud or happy that someone with a comparable life to your own can do well. Another factor in this specific case is that Sweden is a tiny country but it is still able to produce events and players on par with those from far greater nations.
That being said, nationalism and national pride is a very bad thing, spurring an "us and them" mentality and a rationalization for militarism and aggression. It should never be more serious than rooting for your team in friendly competition.

2)The spectator experience at the DreamArena is AWSOME, but all the lower bracket games have been shown on smaller screens and sometimes in pretty bad(loud, no seats) envirnonments. I'm pretty sure DH will improve the spectator experience this time though as they've had alot of complaints about it, and they are focusing more on the tournament aspect of the event overall.
And yes, expect to stand in line for atleast 2 hours if you want a seat at the DreamArena(as there are about 13k people at the event).
Oh and bring something to sleep on if you're not gonna get a hotelroom
I'm just curious about the final day with so many games in one day. 13 games in one day, each game averaging at least an hour.. Will all of them be casted? Will there be breaks in between? That schedule will be a monster for sure

I dont think we'll see many koreans tbh. They have shown before that they are not really interested in foreign tournies unless they get their trip paid (which of course is understandable, at least to some extent). IPL only had koreans from FXO and invited/qualified ones who got to go for free, and IPL had a higher incentive through a higher price pool. And last DH there was like 4 (?) Koreans, and they even stated they were unhappy with the fact that various parts of their trip wasnt paid for them (you could read about that afterwards on TL).
I'd guess we, at best, might see some FXO koreans and maybe some from MVP through the col/MVP partnership. But apart from that I dont think there will be any more showing up unless they're already in EU for some other reason.

I bought a table seat for DHW11 and thus I could purchase the 1 SEK ticket for the e-sport finals in Kinnarps Hockey Arena. But now when my friend tried to do the same, he couldn't find the 1 SEK ticket anywhere... I'm suspecting they've sold out and that would suck, because we want to watch the finals together...

In my opinion groups are poorly drawn. When you got beastyqt seeded 3d and white-ra 1st... strange. Also TLO and Haypro seed 2 > Beastyqt, Bischu, Cloud, Osho ?? I think there's some confusion with the Bishu too, in every event he attend he performs pretty well but nobody give a fuck, he's like a player no-one care about. This week end he almost beat Stephano (verry close games) and he often beat him on the ladder.

I'm a bit dissapointed there aren't more Koreans in it. I'm afraid it might feel a bit meh after MLG. That said there are potential for a lot of exciting matchups and Day9 can hype the shit out of anything so it should be fine.

Though I kinda wished dreamhack would take more people from qualifiers and less by invites (they don't even need to hold more qualifiers, just make the top 4 or top 8 of each qualifier elligible for the tournament would be alright). There are plenty of dedicated players who want to proof their worth in the scene of competitive gaming, who really get screwed over because most of the bigger tournaments are mainly invites.

To me its a like a world cup draw, as in there is 2 big boys in each group, the 2 you will expect to qualify and 2 not so known players or not expected to do as well which is good :D

Great groups, a bit sad about the many cancels, but that always seems to happen. The groups should make for very close games and a lot of suspense. There's almost every time at least three if not four players very close in skill level. I foresee many upsets this tournament.

What is the deal with the heart beat sensor? What is its purpose, to make sure no one goes into cardiac arrest while playing? To gather some kind of data? Is this routine in tournaments? I have never heard of it as a policy before.

I want to do a BarCraft for this, but the beginning of the first semi to the possible conclusion of the Grand finals spans 6.5 hours. Why do they give 3 hours for the second semi final (best of 5) and only 1.5 hours to the grand finals (best of 7). I wish it was more clear as to why. I can't plan a 7 hour barcraft for 3 matches.

So they can measure how stressed or "excited" they are playing infront of 4000 ppl in the crowd. Just like they do with pokerplayers on tv you can see how their pulse is changing when they are bluffing etc.

I dont understand why people are complaining about the line up, even players who are not so known are usually really really good when they attend such a tournament. Also how should new faces ever make it to the top if we have tournaments only inviting Idra, Dimaga etc.

As for short notice I expect they all dropped out at various stages a while ago and Draemhack simply decided to announce it all now rather than stagger them out one by one.
Looking at these groups I can't expect many upsets, the top name in each game should go through fine and in most cases I can also see the second placed name advancing without much trouble.

Player lounge is something that had been thought up by TL themselves to organize but I don't think it ever happened. Obviously it's a really good idea. For Dreamhack to do it is incredibly valuable. If I would try to list the things Dreamhack has helped push as a standard for spectating I would forget at least one because there's so many. Edit: 'I just realized that other events must have something like that as well, but you don't really see it so I was wrong for saying it like that that. And I forgot to mention the presence of the sports physiologist. For which the text would have made sense.'
The heartbeat monitor has potential. As long as it doesn't move easily so players get uncomfortable or is too tight it can be a good addition. Either way it will be really nice to just find out. I think if it's done well and with the addition of the player camera, it will add a ton of excitement and emotion for the viewer.
The cancellations are unfortunate, but they are to be expected and I would hope there is a rule that sets a deadline for being able to cancel without having to pay a fee or become subject to a similar repercussion. To elaborate, a rule could be that a player is allowed to put a possible last minute cancellation in, if that is turned in before the deadline for that, and another for the final decision. It would allow them to warn everyone in advance, reducing the potential backlash and create a lot of understanding for the situation. In addition to allowing possible replacements to be set up before the final decision is even known.
I read the rules document as well. Very meticulous. Overwhelming line up of players. Super psyched for the event! Hope everything runs smooth and everyone has a good time.

JYP and Revival got owned by EG at IEM Guangzhou. Killer wasn't even the best KiLLeR at IEM New York. Polt went to MLG Orlando and nobody even noticed. Clide is fighting for his Code S life at the moment, as is Killer. They probably just decided it'd be better to rest at home and practice for their important upcoming matches instead of jetsetting to the other side of the world and being in potentially bad shape when they got back.
Sad to se how many of the koreans that decided to skip this tournament. Was really exited to se Clide since there have been a lot of talk about him (Artisos love for him) so it sucks that he wont come. MC i can forgive since he has been to many of the DH events this year. I wonder why Demuslim wont come though. It's a 2hr flight from UK to Sweden ... The lack of the "best of the best" will make this tournament interesting. Now players that are not the absolute best will have a greater chance of winning some money and i think that is a good sign for esports.

Maybe they got the idea from Dota 2, "The International" (the tournament with 1.7 million $ prizepool) had it, and as far as I can remember that's the only time I've seen it in esports.

The translation of Dreamhacks website is a joke. The text is either swedish or english at random, and there is no way to change language (as the previous clusterfuck site had). Perhaps I'm retarded and haven't found that option, but if something like that is hard that proves that the guy who made the site sucks. Language options are only available in the webshop, and thank god for that... Not that I need the option, but it makes it very hard for non swedes and non english speakers.

But i have to express a bit of dissapointment, ive seen a trend the past events that you release "big Starcraft 2 names" very early, and the hype begins, and then they drop out 1-2 weeks before the events. Generally they are being replaced by Swedish/European players who simply doesnt have the same skill level.
Last event it was Anypro, Marinekingprime etc. There must be some way to avoid this?

With SC2 still being rather young, the scene still constantly changes and shifts. Best example is Leenock winning MLG Providence. I don't think anyone saw that coming, just like everyone was baffled when the KraToss MC dropped out of code A after having won 2 or 3 GSL championships.
The Starcraft 2 is very unpredictable and volatile, and it's one of the main reasons why I like it so much. There's a lot of variations in player style and you get to see a lot of new stuff each new tournament.
If anything has a chance of making Esports more mainstream and going beyond its fanbase of "nerds," it's starcraft 2 imo. LoL has the viewer count, but SC2 has the excitement and skill ceiling and most importantly, the casters.

The dreamhack tournament have taken place on different locations so the stream have varied. Last winter dreamhack had pretty much flawless streams for most people if I remember correctly so lets hope that will be the case here as well.
I think this heartbeat sensor thing was discussed way back during the GSL open seasons. It is just an annoyance for the players and doesn't really make any difference for us viewers. I think people said that they tried this in poker and it wasn't a great success. What we need is dramatic OGN-style closeups when something important happens.
Other than that this will be a sick tournament. Hopefully the streams won't lag like they did in DH Valencia.

If some viewers don't have problems with stream -> DH is sending fast enough, good enough. If most viewers don't have problems with stream, the 3rd party company actually doing the streaming is doing it good enough. Unfortunately, for most people, the problems lie with their ISP's routing policies, how they connect to other networks/backbones. That's where the problem is, no matter if you got 1/1 or 1000/1000. Or it could be worse, it could be your home setup.
What most of you fail to realize is that outside of your own ISP's network you have no guarantees about speed. Your 100/100 can give 10mbps download speed without any problems simply because of how it's routed. Or for a different example, say your ISP has 10000 customers with 100/100, what do you think happens when all of them want to download something from outside the ISP's network (assuming it's a nice ISP and their own infrastructure can actually support 10000 people pumping 100mbps in/out each). You do realize maths says the ISP needs 1tbps connection to the outside? That's around 1000000000000bps.
So before you yell at DH think about the fact that you don't even have 100/100 with the outside of your ISP and it can get a lot worse depending on what you're connecting to, what other networks you use to get there and all the QoS and routing policies.
If some people have a good stream then sorry, blame your ISP, call them, yell at them to work shit out with the other end of the stream (which most likely isn't DH and most likely isn't JTV either).
Speculation here, but seems common sense and that's how I'd do it:
DH------>DHISP------->(3rd party streaming server rented by streaming site that DH uses - not exclusively, some bandwidth/usage rights)------>(3rd party streaming cloud/black-box network)----->(3rd party streaming server chosen as the best option for you)----->YOURISP------>YOU
The actual streaming site is just a UI used on DH (streaming software like xsplit) and on YOU (browser player).
If problems would be on DH side - everyone gets crappy stream. If problems are at 3rd party, everyone or some - depending on which server the player thinks is best and where in the chain the problems are - will have issues. Low chance, from what I heard the companies doing this are extremely good. Most likely problems are between chosen server and you or, if too many are sent to one server, out bandwidth of that server so a semi localized problem.

Thats not actualy true, while UK is not part of Schangen they have some sort of special relationship with Shangen meaning that You can enter UK with only your ID (inside Shangen your documents are not even checked most of the time. You can drive trough border without even noticing it. And while i am not UK citizen, i doubt they will make more problems for their citizens than they do did to me.

You realize that Dreamhack has a 120 gigabit connection at their venue? Their routers are _insane_ as well. If you are having problems, then its either on your end, or because you have a bad connection to the nearest Twitch-TV server

They always check your passport pretty carefully when you fly back in to the UK, and more closely since 9/11. I think you can use an ID card instead if your country has one (we don't). If he's sent his passport off (to sort out his USA visa, I assume) then he is stuck. It's a passport issue, as far as I can tell.

So before you yell at DH think about the fact that you don't even have 100/100 with the outside of your ISP and it can get a lot worse depending on what you're connecting to, what other networks you use to get there and all the QoS and routing policies.
If some people have a good stream then sorry, blame your ISP, call them, yell at them to work shit out with the other end of the stream (which most likely isn't DH and most likely isn't JTV either).
Speculation here, but seems common sense and that's how I'd do it:
DH------>DHISP------->(3rd party streaming server rented by streaming site that DH uses - not exclusively, some bandwidth/usage rights)------>(3rd party streaming cloud/black-box network)----->(3rd party streaming server chosen as the best option for you)----->YOURISP------>YOU
The actual streaming site is just a UI used on DH (streaming software like xsplit) and on YOU (browser player).
If problems would be on DH side - everyone gets crappy stream. If problems are at 3rd party, everyone or some - depending on which server the player thinks is best and where in the chain the problems are - will have issues. Low chance, from what I heard the companies doing this are extremely good. Most likely problems are between chosen server and you or, if too many are sent to one server, out bandwidth of that server so a semi localized problem.
So I can't blame DH for using an inferior partner? MLG never lags for me and they have even more concurrent viewers than DH and they are streaming from the US, I don't see your logic. The problem originates from DH selecting Twitch as their partner, hence it's their fault when it lags, no matter how much you try to blame my ISP (which is connected to TeliaSonera...)

There was some shit going on with TwitchTV that day, I don't remember what but it's was like a major server failure or something quite out of the ordinary that they couldn't fix immediately.

Wow that heartrate monitor is a nice touch. It's going to be really interesting to see if noobs have a signifficantly higher bpm than pros going into games on the main stage.

Dude dont worry. I think they had 30 gbit at summer with 7000-8000 computers.
What I like is that both the group stage #2 and the final bracket pairs will be selected through a draw right after the previous stage ends, so you actually have no way to tell who's going to fight who, like you did with MLG pool play "2nd of group B is going against the losers championship bracket n°2" and stuff like that.
I just read the dreamhack site and looked at the schedule. It looks like there's, at most, 6 hours a day of SC2. Is that right? Are there multiple streams or just one?

Yes. This is unwatchable. I can normally watch twitch tv at 720+ but the streams are so mess up that 240 is still pausing. I must say after MLG this been a huge let down. I guess I'm just skip it till vods are out.
Of all the big tourneys in the past year, this has gotta be the worst one in terms of lag on the stream. Such a shame, given the line-up, the casters, the production is all top-notch.
