OrangeMilkis just tweeted:
"Looks like PlayXP will no longer be covering e-Sports as much as before. Thank you, PlayXP, for all the amazing content."
"Everyone say your thank yous to the PlayXP journalists that made it all happen for so long: @ssidaglez and @JamOnTheGroove"
Okay so i thought PlayXP covered BW, but appar they do more wc3 and sc2. ty to mod for moving ^_^
I guess this isnt as bad as i thought then, still sad though, afaik they are the biggest korean e sports site? its the one we hear about the most thats for sure
EDIT:

Goddamn it, stop it with the bad news.

playxp was more of sc2 and wc3 coverage than bw, so it's not really a huge deal for bw. still a big bummer though.

I thought PlayXP didn't cover Brood War...

yeah they didn't cover BW more than a few rumors and some small interviews with pros, mostly cover WC3 and SC2.

I am not sure this belongs in this section, as PlayXP doesn't really cover BW does it?
still sad to hear.
I thought all translations were from PLayXP tho in terms of interviews, or does DES do it aswell?
|
So PlayXP turns down as a whole or does it shift it's content? + Show Spoiler + Not a big blow for BW...
|
Well, about the MBC thing, it's nto shutting down, it's just scaling back the coverage as well. I talked to Milkis at MLG, and it's unlikely that MBC Game is "shutting down", it'll convert to a more music based channel, and leave maybe only 20% of its content as Gaming, and most of that left to SCBW and possibly SC2 in the future. You have to understand, that MBC Game, as a channel, aside form proleague, MSL, and the odd scbw show like Attack! the rest is fluff, lots of bs shows, either talking about scbw without any actual gameplay or using old replays, or about lesser games being displayed that has very VERY low ratings.
Realistically, while the decline in the televised gaming world is worrisome, it doesn't mean that suddenly we're never going to see SCBW happening again. This is probably along the same remarks for PlayXP as well, they'll stick to super popular games to cover like SCBW, war3, sc2, and maybe dota2 when it releases, but it will probably put less emphasized is all. They're a business and need to cover things that will make it profitable and survivable as a corporation, and if the ratings aren't there anymore covering Korean Dungeon or MMO game #829, then they'll have to scale back eventually.
I think MBCGame relied too heavily on the profits/hits made by SCBW to carry their other content, and now that sc2 is out, they're preparing for scbw to no longer able to carry that full load anymore.

Somewhere Elly the ESPORTS Elephant is crying.
|
That really sucks, we still will get post match interview i hope.
|
I don't entire get it: isn't playXP a gaming oriented site? If they "scale back" esports coverage then what will they cover?
Its like hearing "team liquid scales back on starcraft coverage": but TL is all about sc anyway...
|
eSports is just not a very profitable space to be in.
Can't blame them for trying.
Thank you PlayXP! All the best of luck in the future.
|
That's really bad news for SC2 in korea, and e-sport in general. That sucks
|
Oh how I will miss playXP, but this seemed inevitable.

So.. what will they cover instead of esports?
|
People shouldn't let this worry them too much about the international scene. SC2 is getting huge everywhere except Korea. Which is an interesting change. We're used to Korea predicting the success of e-sports, but SC2 is a unique case where I would say Germany/Sweden/USA are the countries we should care about.
|
On August 04 2011 02:40 Probe1 wrote: So.. what will they cover instead of esports?
Probably K-pop.
Regardless of what they cover, it still sucks for their SC2 and WC3 communities.
|
From their site I'd guess they'll still be game related, but more towards stuff like Diablo 3 and WoW. More of a casual gaming site.
The biggest concern would be who is going to pick up post-match GSL interviews. GOM does their own but they are always really short and have really general questions which always elicit the same answers.
|
It's ok guys, with the incoming recession / depression Starcraft will become more popular in Korea.
Brood War got popular as a form of cheap entertainment in Korea a decade ago. This time it will happen with SC2 considering how cheap a computer that can play the game there is and also considering the presence of Brood War already in the country.

Was there a stated reason, or are we assuming the demand/money just wasn't there for the amount of coverage it was getting?

Is there another big SC2 site (thisisgame?) that could possibly do GSL interviews? I really liked those, you got to get a lot of personality from the koreans that we don't usually get to see

They have their own, but we're not allowed to translate from TIG.

Yeah, the money just wasn't there to keep the coverage going, which was unfortunate.

This sucks...
|
A tournament without insights ( aka Interviews ) is like a Cheeseburger without cheese it is still eatable but there is something important missing. Paid reporting is needed in a entertainment delivering area . I dont know how to exactly put it in words but for a short and easy for all understanble way of saying or basicly just repeating was is known this step put E-sports one step behind in point of world known Sport.
I mean those players arent clowns that deliver entertainment in a circus , they are playing a highly mind needing strategic game. Just viewing alone is little understandable for the most folks.
|
No more GSL interviews ? Damn, it was the thing letting me knew about GSL the most...
|
We're going to lose a lot of the "personality" of the Korean players now, sadly.
|
Noooo, hopefully we can get interviews from elsewhere, one of my favorite bits of GSL
|
Milkis, do you think there are any other sites or news sources poised to take the place of playxp, or are we gonna have to wait and see how Sc2 fares in Korea for the next months?
|

At least they still do the interviews on air. Right?

Milkis I'm sure money had something to do with it as I heard it was almost a volunteering job. But don't you think the their last interview with Maka prime had something to do with it? It was a pretty bizarre incident.
Sucks about not being able to translate TIG interview. GOM needs to work out something so that many of their customer can access info and interview from GSL. If you think about it, it would be pretty f stupid if it can't happen.
|
Well, this sucks, no more GSL Interviews D: another site will have to do it.
|
No0o0, I loved those interviews.
|
Losing the GSL interviews is a huge hit =/ Without that, what medium do we have to hear from the players? Random Tweets?

why doesnn't GOM just hire english translator and post interviews and info on their site? and contents free to be used in TL and couple other sites? problem solved.
|
Damn i really enjoyed reading the interviews
|
|
Man this seems really sad Sc2 seems to not be growing nearly as fast (if at all?) in Korea as it is in the west.
Just another reminder of the point Milkis made on Lo3 talking about the EG debacle, how Sc2 is struggling in Korea..

+ Show Spoiler +After Maka got through the qualifier they posted winner's interview wit him on playXP. But the answers Maka gave was just really disappointing to say the least. He said things like he didn't practice at all but somehow won all those matches, not sure if he wants to continue progaming stuff, he's more into other games right now, he's living with parents right now and doesnt have a plan to join with team right now cuz he doesn't have the motivation, don't know who's in code A .. stuffs like that.
Mostly the tone and nuance was pretty disrespectful of his opponents. Maka is known to do some weird interviews and what not but this just sounded like some bored teen giving short answers and couldn't be bothered to do interview. many people blamed Maka for not being professional and all that.
Then another interview of Maka came up on TIG and even though it was an exactly same content, it was done in much more matured tone and one you would normally expect from any pro gamer.
So the army of angry netizens who was originally mad with Maka's interview was like WTF is going on? who did this interview with Maka from playXP? and why is it so different?
Next day (which is the day 2 of the qualifier), it seemed like the journalist who worked for playXP just quit as no more content was coming up. Honestly I dont know what happened in between but I saw some people apologizing to journalist there.
There you have it.
|
Well, in business there are always transformations, let's hope another company takes on the journalist element that they give up. Big thanks to them for the excellent interviews.
|
I wonder if it would be feasible for TL to contact the journalists in question and see if they'd be willing to continue doing interviews that TL could release in both languages.
Just a pipedream thought.

Picture sums it all up. Where will we get our juicy juicy interviews from GSL now? Where will we hear of cute puppies, thoughts of retirement due to wrist injuries, and predictably one sided games?
WHERE O WHERE.

That's extremely dissapointing. Are Rachel and CSN still there, maybe they can start making some interviews.

Hopefully GOM gets some sort of interview set-up and post it on their site. They're great connection between the players and foreign fans.

starcraft 2 is pretty unpopular in korea. everyone plays starcraft 1. major reasons include no lan and u need a decent comp to play sc2.

I will miss the PlayXP interviews. Yeah... GOM need to start doing the post-game interviews themselves. One of the best parts of the GSL experience is to know the players and post-game interviews are definitely a necessity. How else would players like Byun or HongUn get popular?
