When Korean netizens pick a target, they don't stop.
In the West, everyone has a bad thing to say about someone: whether it's Rebecca Black, Justin Bieber, George Bush or Paris Hilton. The difference is that there is ill will towards them and a snide remark or two made in passing.
In Korea, netizens will camp at the equivalent of your Facebook wall and cover it with profanities, disturbing images, tell you to commit suicide, petition for you to be deported, petition you to kill yourself and the like.
This is why when a controversy strikes, many celebrities opt to close down their blogs for months to lie low. But then when they appear on a television show, the message boards and e-mails for that television show are bombarded with hate messages, and sponsors are also threatened. These messages usually come in continuous waves, sometimes faster than moderators can delete them; some SNSD fans may recall Taeyeon looking visibly shaken live on air after messages started pouring in during her video-radio show.
This can carry on beyond the grave. Quite literally. When actress Choi Jinshil killed herself after being wrongfully tormented in a witch-hunt, one nutter decided to dig up her grave and steal her ashes.
Welcome to the life of a Korean celebrity.
I feel that Jessica is taking a stand against the behaviour. Most people stop short of following through with the charges, showing mercy when the offenders are actually arrested and beg for forgiveness with running eyes and noses in front of cameras... but it's never stopped the persistent offenders. Beyond the fact that I am a SlayerS fan, it's about time someone took action to begin the process of stamping this shit out of my country's culture.
EDIT: For the people wondering the mentality of those committing suicide, I recently saw an interview with Baek Jiyoung who was mired in a scandal of her own. She was partly to blame but she was also a victim. The prolonged verbal abuse she had thrown at her online and through other media was quite intense
She described how she couldn't live in her house any more because her address had been leaked. She lived life hiding in a hotel and she described standing by the balcony of the high-rise hotel, looking down. With so much pressure and nothing but criticism coming in from all sides, of course she felt alone. She thought for a fleeting moment that all of this would just go away for her if she jumped. If she jumped, she would have taken control to finally end the torment. Suddenly, she would have had the power to do something.
Thankfully for Korean music, she came to her senses. But I thought this was interesting as a close look into the mind of a celebrity who discussed their mindset during these hate campaigns.
+ Show Spoiler +PS: This doesn't reflect the views of anyone else. It's just onion being onion. Talking not necessarily about this particular case, but how serious a problem netizen hate campaigns are. I'm just another Korean frustrated at the nonsensical destructive hivemind bullshit that my people direct at each other. Here, there is no lulz, no lol i troll u... it's just unbridled, senseless hatred.
You know, Super Junior fans once tormented one of their own for taking a picture with a Super Junior member. That member had been congratulating the girl in being able to lose a large amount of weight and a short while later, she was dead. Thanks to her fellow fans.
Enough of this. Seriously. Enough.

Thank you for this. Very few people in this thread understand how Korea (and Japan as well) can often be overzealous in what they do, whether it be harassing a target or being vigilantes.

Oh Asian "honor" culture, the suicides you inflict

Excellent post. It sounds like Koreans need to get their act together. It appears that koreas dark side is much darker than I had assumed. Then again Paris Hilton had sex tapes leak, addresses and phone numbers leaked and she is still on top
Americans thrive on the attention. There is no such thing in America as bad media attention

I understand Jessica in some way. You can react emotionally when you face such hard words, even on the internet. But a few hours later, you got to keep cool, realise that all this shit is nothing more than talks in the air, and keep everything in check. It seems like, in this situation, Jessica is blowing everything out of proportion, and it's starting to become ridiculous.

Reading this thread, really opened my eyes to Korean 'Popular' culture. I'm actually quite disturbed.
I feel for Slayers Jessica. She is trying to be protective. Very much the mother of the Clan.
Maybe all she needs is for the team to have one big group hug and say "We all here for each other"
^Serious, It can make handling these situations much better

I think someone else has already said it best, so I'll repost this: On July 20 2011 13:40 Crisco wrote:+ Show Spoiler +if you understood the severity of korean netizen criticisms & lewd remarks against famous individuals (celebrities & etc) you would understand half of why Jessica is doing what she has done. Unfortunately, Korean netizen's comments are lewd, critical and harsh to the point that the likes of most forums would look like a holy scripture. It is not only that, but the way most of the comments are worded. Often times, these posts/comments are not just a comment about the particular individual but a deconstruction of the individual as a human being into objects of worth (sexually) and lack of worth (ability wise).
These comments are NOT simply "she sucks, why are you taking her in" or "I would love to bang her".. it is more like "hey, why don't you stop singing and just take off your clothes" or "God you suck, please hang yourself."
The comments of Korean netizens are heavily responsible for at least 1-2 high-profile suicides a year AT LEAST. In other words, every 6 months, the mob's dehumanizing of certain "selected" individuals plays a significant role which leads to suicides or suicide attempts. This is one of the biggest reasons such a law was enforced in Korea.
The likes of such actions AND consequences do not really exist anywhere else in the world as far as I am aware.
someone in the forums asked why Jessica, a celebrity/actress, would not have more control and be willing to ignore the trolls and the reason is BECAUSE she is an actress. She knows, better than anyone, how damaging these criticisms can be. They don't just post in their own forums, might I add. In certain situations, I've seen these people storm to the actress/celebrities' WEBSITE and post things like "hey, your singing is awful, you should hang yourself" and "why bother singing, when you can just show your breasts." Why not censor it in their website? In that particular occasion, it was posted so often & so frequently that a person would have to be deleting all day 24/7. People's careers literally get ruined over this every year. Sometimes, you really can't ignore them and hope they disappear, because they will just keep at it even if it's absolutely ridiculous. Sometimes ignoring them is the worst way to go about it, and I think Jessica recognizes that, especially in Eve's case, because her career is just starting. I don't approve of some of Jessica's decisions - namely, putting Eve on the bench at the GSTL when she's only a trainee and won't play for several weeks - but the community's reaction to SlayerS recruiting Eve is fucking disgusting for the most part. No, Jessica shouldn't have put her on the bench, but that doesn't justify treating Eve like shit when she hasn't done anything to warrant such behavior - and I honestly don't think that having your face photoshopped to the body of a porn star is in any way acceptable under any circumstance. Nobody has even seen her play, for god's sake, and yet, quite a lot of people are already attacking her simply for being on the damn team. Furthermore, just because it happens doesn't make it right, and I'm shocked that more people just can't grasp this concept. And I do not think you grasp the concept of celebredome *totally made that up* in the sense that this has gone on forever. You cannot take this stuff personal. Who cares if someone says "You should get naked and do this" Honestly who cares? Okay, put it this way: Someone on the street calls me a chink. I'm fine with that, because you know what? Whatever. Fuck them. Who cares, right? I'm never going to see the bastard again in my lifetime, probably. No use worrying about it. But just because I can deal with it or that I choose to deal with it doesn't mean that others can't be hurt by that slur or that they shouldn't protest the use of that term. You are not everyone, everyone is not you, and people deal with pressure and insults differently based on a number of different factors, including culture, which I think is a big factor here. I guess it is because I was "picked" on as a child that this stuff doesn't directly hurt me. I will never meet these people, nor do I care what other people think of me. Obviously celebrities have an image that they feel they must up-hold for their fans, instead of just doing them and saying "Fuck everyone else" Or because you have a completely different situation? Let's say your image is what you are living off (well technically here it's the game skill, but if she can't appear on a televised game at all thanks to having a ruined image, then she might as well not make a living). And now it's being smeared, and the general public (being so easily influenced as all general publics are) shun you, call for sponsors to drop you, etc. Suddenly you are out of work, you can't find new work (who wants a little whore to be part of their team?), you are young (she's 22), probably can't find a guy who will want her (relationships in the asian countries are a lot more strict), and all you did was be a girl on a pro-gaming team. Oh. Well I guess it's different than being picked on as a kid, but not actually suffering any damage. Wait, there are kids here in the U.S. who do get picked on, suffer major emotional damage, end up hurting themselves or others. I guess it isn't so different after all. Except that Asian countries are generally more strict about everything.
I don't really agree with you at all. Her success isn't based on what some extreme netizens think about her. If she's good at the game, she won't be out of work because some morons did some shitty photoshop jobs and placed her face on porn stars.
I don't think anyone has gotten shunned for stuff like this, and her job should be based mostly around her skill. If models, actors and singers who are all about image don't get ruined by the massive amounts of photoshop porn and negative remarks, I don't that Jessica is really defending Eve's career by taking on everyone on the internet who is negative about her, her career shouldn't be anywhere near jeopardy because of shit like this.

And what people need to remember is that reputation is everything in Korea.
All celebrities: the top actors, singers, sports stars... their primary occupation rarely earns enough for a living. Most income comes from commercial endorsement and sponsorship deals.
These all rely on public goodwill and a public record clear of scandal. Just being good at your specialist field means nothing of companies are unwilling to sign you up.
By manufacturing controversy, one can actually destroy a celebrity's livelihood.

Yeah, but honestly I'm confused about what the controversy is here, it's not like there's some scandal that netizens have latched onto and are harassing her for, it isn't something that should actually affect her reputation in this regard, it's just dicks being dicks...
I honestly feel like all the attention Jessica is drawing to everyone who says anything negative could actually be counter-productive, also it's just silly to see someone react this way when they've been in the entertainment industry themselves, you can look past it, there isn't a scandal here, it's just some assholes and she's going a step further and calling out people who simply criticized the Eve decision and aren't doing the vile threatening/pornographic stuff.

and yet it was said that Slayers_jessica scouted her for her looks as one of the reasons and knew she was only diamond level player
it's like saying, 'hey I'm recruited to a professional sc2 team due to my looks and I'm not very good, so don't make fun of me'. The way they made it public and stating one of the reasons for the pickup, just seems like they were asking for it.
If jessica knew what the korean culture is like then she didn't handle it accordingly. Also, she's just making it more controversial by suing everyone who just being somewhat critical like Haeun_Cielu.

I didn't think one could ever make a scandal out of accusing a rapper, of all people, for lying about where he got his diploma - I mean, who the hell cares? It's not as if he's actually using his English major to further his rapping career, no matter where he got the damn degree - but hey, look at what happened to Tablo.

Haeun, the twitter user is the one making a fuss out of nothing. I suppose nobody actually bothered to read the top of the page that the twitter user's name appears on? I thought it would be the first thing everybody would have checked but nope. Haeun's a drama queen and went on a full-tilt guilt trip when she thought things were getting serious.

1. i am pretty sure that slayers is not able to pay you any "top money" they probably have some monthly payments but those will be low.
2. if you are a hot korean girl and want to show off your goods you would get more money doing something related to those great clubs they have.
3. that "gold league" girl would probably beat you fairly easy in SC2

If I was in Eve's situation, I don't think I would be able to handle it well either, and I am a guy. How quickly we type, and how our mouths flap when we judge others!
@archoOid You are right, but say it as it is. It isn't borderline sexist, this thread is rampant with sexism. It's disgusting. I really found this kind of funny.
Do people not realise being sexist is treating women differently, and not "being mean to women"?

I'm surprised to find that so many SC2 fans aren't fans of freedom of speech. Even if you accept the principle that offending people should be illegal (which I don't), having laws that arbitrate what's offensive and what isn't is a disaster. These Koreans laws are ridiculous and it's disgraceful of Jessica (or anybody) to take advantage of them.

It doesn't matter that it seems like "they were asking for it," because in the end, it still doesn't excuse the behavior or the reactions of the netizens. If you're stumbling about drunk in the middle of the night down an abandoned street and somebody mugs you, is it your fault? Hell, no. It's the robber's fault! Was it perhaps ill-advised for you to be stumbling about drunk in the middle of the night down an abandoned street? Well, yes. But the thing is, that doesn't mean you deserve to be robbed, nor does it excuse the robber for having robbed you.

agreed. A diamond player shouldn't be able to join a team simply because they are a girl. Proves f-in sexism.
