You dont even have to do it full time. If work full time and come home and are playing SC anyways in your free time, you can throw up a stream and just get a little extra spending money while helping grow the sc community

The amount that Destiny streams for that 4k/month basically precludes having a regular job which means you're paying for things like insurance out of pocket (in the US) and its probably extremely unstable. Seems extremely risky for most people.

I think Incontrol has it right when he says that professional SC player/streamer/commentator is a privileged position; it takes a huge amount of time and effort to be one of the top community faces and make a living off SC.

Destiny is actually one of the few people who make a living entirely from streaming. The thing is you have to treat it like a normal job in order to get any kind of significant income, i.e. dont start streaming expecting u can pull 4k/month by streaming 2h/day.

Nope, you're absolutely right.. it's $.002 cents per viewer when doing commercials.

And I'm quite sure Day9 would be getting all expenses + pay on top of that from Dreamhack.

He's got it going on. But he's earnt it.

Sorry but I dont know where to ask this question.

Why do streamers just get 2$/1000 viewer for a commercial?
That is so little compared to for example German television where a commercial usually costs about 1cent per viewer which makes 10€/1000 viewer.
Not to mention that TV commercials are usually in a block with 20 other commercials while we only see one commercial at a time on streaming services. So that should make commercials on streaming services more valuable.
Furthermore it is a lot easier to precisely reach your target audience via streams than via TV.
(Of course you can only reach certain audiences via streams)

Is it because commercials on live streams are still underused by the industry and thus the price is low?
Or does the rest go to the streaming services?

The cost for the advertiser and the income for the streamer are not the same. The streaming provider will get much more than 2$/1kv, but he has to pay all his costs and his own profit from it.
Different streaming providers are paying different rates.

than TLO made $50-62/hr for charity when he did the 24 hour thingy (he had 20k views at some points)

Well, under those circumstances, I think it'd be more. I would assume that less than half (the typical figure) were using adblock because they were watching for the cause primarily and a lot of people were spamming f5 to force more ads.

No. 2/10th of a penny per viewer per ad (i.e. 0.2 cents or $0.002).

It is not that everyone is using adblock. A lot of countries don't get the ads. Simple as that. A lot of time when I am watching streams and they are going for an ad. I just don't get to see one (I don't use adblock).

for two reasons. First TV companies deal directly with the advertisers, while internet broadcasters deal with intermediaries like justin.tv.
And secondly tv commercials are put there based on the advertiser's requests, who study target demographics of the show and compare it to the target demographics of the product, hence making the advertising more valuable.
