In the Round of 16 group stages, players went 4-11 against the opponents that they handpicked into their groups. This makes some sense, because for 2/3 of the picks, players are choosing from a pool of better players, but let's break it down.
Group leaders:
Sn0w beat Sharp and Light beat Speed in their Bo1s. (2-0)
Soulkey lost to Barracks. (2-1)
Best lost to BTS in their Bo1, but won 2-1 in their Bo3 runback. (4-3).
Second pickers:
Sharp lost 0-2 to Jaedong (4-5)
Speed lost 0-2 to Larva (4-7)
Last pickers:
Queen lost 0-1 to Bisu. (4-8)
Jaedong lost twice to Mini 0-1, 0-2 (4-11)
Overall, only first pickers won ANY games against their chosen opponents, but even then only won half the Bo1s. Technically effort can still face soma in the finals, but that is a long shot. I am just getting back into BW after a long absence. Is this a common pattern? I would have thought at least one non-group-leader would be able to take a game off of an opponent they got to choose and plan for.
