SC2 is the first multiplayer RTS I played, and I don't play too much anyway, but I get promoted pretty much every time a new season starts:
beta = top copper league 1st season = top bronze league (same as copper) 2nd season = top silver league 3rd season (now) = top gold league
I guess it's good that I, at least, almost always play in the top 10 of my division, it's almost guaranteed promotion in the new season.

Placed into plat at the beginning of season 3. The only builds I knew were 4 gate, 3 gate expo PvZ, and 3 gate robo PvT. I think I went 4-1 or 3-2 in placement matches. Anyways I decide to learn some new macro builds.
Early plat was losing to random cheeses, proxy 2 gate, 3 rax marine/scv all-ins, 6/7 pool, etc. I usually didn't lose to the same cheese more than once or twice though (although proxy 2 gate kept getting me...). So I learned to defend mediocre-execution cheeses first. Then, most of my time in plat was spent losing to 2-3 rax aggression or roach/ling all-ins while trying to 1 gate FE. I got promoted to diamond after winning a PvT on Nezarim Crypt because my T opponent timed out after 10 game seconds. A bit anticlimactic but whatever, a promotion's a promotion. I think I was around ~80 wins 1v1 at this point.
While the story of plat league was losing to early pressure because I couldn't defend and macro at the same time, the story of early diamond league was losing to ling run-bys, multiprong drops, and terrible army control (especially my HT... so many games when I would have 5 full energy HT and not get a single storm or feedback off during the big fight). Eventually at 181 1v1 wins I started a PvP on Tal Darim. I was back on the 4 gate train after trying 3 gate twilight openers for a few weeks because I had been watching SaSe stream all the time, and apparently koreans ONLY do 4 gate PvP and still do fine against "anti-4 gate" builds. Plus it's Tal Darim, my micro is nowhere near good enough to defend a good 4 gate with just 3 gates on that map. I'm scouting around my base around 4 minutes and there is a probe throwing up proxy pylons everywhere. I kill the probe and check the other parts of my base and there's another probe throwing up proxy pylons. I guess he either went 12 gate like me, or forgot a chrono boost on his core, since my warpgate finished just barely after his. Easy defense, and counter for the 182nd win and promotion to master league.
Since I was curious about this when I was diamond: for the few weeks before the day I got promoted, I played a low-mid master player probably every 10-15 games. I think I went something like 15-3 the day I got promoted though, started off normally - playing mid-high diamonds - then eventually only playing high diamond and after that mostly masters players. So my diamond -> master promotion could be summarized as: maintain high diamond (possibly very low master) MMR for a month, then go on a sick streak to bump the moving average into master league territory.

Only started playing recently, but watched a fair bit of SC2 beforehand and since buying it. Only just placed today and, surprisingly to me, despite losing 4/5 of my placement matches, got Silver. Onwards, now, to glory! Or to bronze. Probably the latter.
|
started off in bronze, having never played any rts before, picked Zerg as my race and just played. After about a month I made silver, a week later gold. stuck in plat for a loooong time. actually i hit 8th in the world in plat lol. eventually got promoted to diamond a week before masters was added. hit masters about three or four months in diamond

I used to play Brood war but only customs with friends and the campaign. I would say I have little to no RTS experience. I played the campaign right as the game came out. Once I finished it, I did my placement matchs with protoss because I liked the new protoss units. After 10 games I decided to play zerg which was my favorite in bw and i always loved the swarm.
Season 1 - placed gold, made platinum after a month and got diamond toward the end, Seaon 2 Stuck in diamond Season 3, started in diamond again but with new practice partners and an attitude to win, I was determined to get masters. I always had a super high apm for diamond but bad decision making and reacting. Did a lot of replay analysis and watching of pro streams. Then in a 2-3 day period I went on a 12-1 run and started playing only masters. I lost a couple but won the majority by playing smart and safe. A week later I got masters after someone dropped :/ I'll take it!

Season 1: Bronze, was my first serious RTS.. felt weird, switched between terran and toss alot. Season 2: omg Silver.. still switched between terran and toss.. Same season I streamrolled through silver, got into gold after like 30 games. Season 3: Plat:D Protoss became my race. Im high plat now touching low diamond.
Still I think im not learning/improving fast enough.. not using hotkeys good enough etc. But still happy.. I like the game and like ESPORTS.. and ofc the community is freakin awesome:D

In two seasons i moved my way up from silver to masters, the game i got promoted into masters i played kind bad but once i got promoted into master league i was screaming YESSSS

I stopped playing Starcraft 2 late last year, and took a long long break from actually playing it. I still watched my dailies (of course), but never played. Once season 2 began, I started playing again and just did what Mr. 9 told me to do. I made it up to Platinum league in a week. In the match where I got promoted in to Platinum, and had been a guy trying to get down to bronze league from diamond. He instaquit the match and I got promoted. FTW

Season 3 during the placement match a platinum protoss was matched against some who used to be known as the Bronze King (refer to blog) The king prep'ed a build taught to him from his master's master's master. The famed Reactor first 2 rax. faced against the protoss's forge fast expand on shattered temple close position.
To be continued

i got the game for christmas last year. i played about 15 games as protoss and was absolutely horrible with it and didnt touch it until the end of may this year. i began bronze as zerg this time with a stupid amount of bonus pool and went from 87 bronze to 6 bronze before S3 started. S3 started and i began as rank 4 bronze. i roach rushed my way through bronze and silver league in about 2 weeks. over the summer ive moved up to rank 14 platinum using actual builds and getting steadily better =]. but now that im platinum i realize how bad i am and have to play more games Dx

Beta phase 1: Silver, racked up a TON of games but never got promoted. Protoss. Phase 2: Platinum, many many games as P and then T Phase 3 / Season 1: Long phase, all Zerg. Got to be high diamond, back when everyone rated themselves by points (2300 diamond) and inflation made the number nigh meaningless. Season 2: Didn't play Season 3: #1 diamond forever. Wish I'd get Masters. Playing consistently.

I got cheesed in a game on scrap station and instead of being graceful I decided to just stay in the game until all my buildings were destroyed. I had 0 units, but I was throwing a little tantrum by staying. I didn't say anything and he quit instead of destroying my last few buildings. Result? A win and a promotion. Not my proudest day, but its a promotion story.

Ok, Season 3 Begins!... I really want Grandmaster... so for the first 2 weeks I grind it up REAAAAAL good. I patiently wait for the 2 weeks to pass as I sit within the top 100 on the SCranks hopping my MMR is high enough this season. After the long wait I logged on one morning to see people finally in the NA GM. Nervious and yet excited... I realized something. The only computer I own is one that run the game at 2 FPS...Since I usually go to a public library to play it seemed I was in a pickle. So hoping that Losing the game would get me permoted. I qued for 1v1 quick match with my frame rate at a whoping 8... The game starts aaaannnnnnd I 7 pool. Hoping to end the game with 6 lings slideshowing into my opponents base who is also playing Z. As his overlord fly's into my base....I think to myself.. HERE WE GO!!!....and then my opponent GG's...No micro... No nothing... Just GG. I get Promoted to GM.. but was curious... why did he leave? I check the replay and it turns out he was 6 pooling and i was 7 pooling so i guess he thought he didn't have a chance or something. Was the weridest promotion ever... which was followed by a demotion couple weeks later due to school and work *FROWN*.

Silver during beta, then Platinum, Diamond, Platinum, Diamond and back to Platinum again...
I think there should be a league between Diamond and Platinum for me, since Platinum is too easy and Diamond is too hard.
|
Gold during season 1, low - mid masters during season 2. Dont play ladder anymore since i dont have time to watch tournements and play at the same time.
Playing protoss
|
Beta: Silver The day Sc2 came out: Placed in Diamond, after ~10 games Master. End of Story
|
been diamond my entire life... I stopped playing.. Now I am 6 pooling my way to masters

Last season, in 4v4 (yes I know, it's not legit blah blah). We played a game for the lulz, winning a stupid macro-like game with plenty of terrible terrible decision from both side. The average level of our team consisted of one platinum 1v1 and 3 teamgame-only platinum/diamond. With our marvelous 1-0 record, we were put in Master League of 4v4, and proceeded to get raped for 6 games by people who were also master in 1v1... at the end of the season, we were still master, places 80ish, with 1-6 record, BUT WE WERE PLACED HIGHER THAN MoMaN WHO WAS IN THE SAME LEAGUE (with 3-2 record... wtf is there with the points, blizz ?) ! We laughed quite a bit for this, and we'll have forever a master ranking in 4v4 for a season :')

If it's your first RTS i would not worry to much, i think everyone without any deep-ish knowledge of how competative RTS works will need something like a year atleast to even begin catching up.
