Banshee is coming from Irish mythology. bean sídhe. It's a "death" spirit (similiar to it's meaning in a shitton of fantasy RPGs / Tabletops (D&D, Warhammer). The sidhe are basically all spirits (see more: wiki)
Playing King Arthus (the roleplaying wargame) payed off

Let's not forget Antioch also. A lot of Protoss stuff have been derived from Greek influences too. Just can't think of some at the moment.
I think Roman too.

Starcraft1 probes would say "chuumon?"
Japanese for "orders?"

In WoW they were female ghosts (as in spirits of dead people, not guys with nukes), essentially.

Protoss needs a unit like The Kraken. Imagine this: whenever the unit is being made, there's an alert (like nuke warning) that says: The Kraken has been released. Screw the mothership, give us the Kraken You just said that Terran is based on Norse mythology and Protoss is based on Greek . . . then shouldn't the Kraken be a Terran unit? No. The Kraken is Greek.

As already mentioned, you will find links like this in ANY random essay or even scientific paper because english has inherited a lot from greek anyways.
He's right. This is the root of most of it. English is heavily inundated with Greek works, so it's no surprise that it shows up here as well. If you study Ancient Greek (which I have), it's pretty astounding how much of the vocabulary is familiar if know English.

I've always thought that the Protoss was based on ancient Rome.

Actually, the kraken comes from the norse mythology. It was said to swim around the icelandic regions, I doubt the greek people had any knowledge of iceland at that time.

I just looked it up because I couldn't remember and English is not my native. But I wanted to agree with searcher and Jombozeus.
Both the Greek and Roman civilizations have contributed a lot to many things in our modern society. Law, Politics, Warfare, Literature, Chemistry, Infrastructure, Language and the list goes on. In language, 3/5ths of the English Vocabulary is from Greek/Latin. Grammar and ~the alphabet are derived from greece. Plurals and singulars from latin maybe? I don't know. With the plural this is a fun example. Singular: agendum, plural: agenda. But overtime we butchered it and now we use agenda as the singular and agendas as the plural. Or datum, data. Into data for both nowadays.
It's too much and too detailed, never ending stream of influence but just look it up. It's very interesting.
So for the final point. They are not references to ancient society, they are traces of the influence of ancient society on our language.

They are indeed from Norse mythology and live in the oceans outside Iceland and Norway. I found it funny when I learned Corsair = pirate, and Arbiter = judge. I guess thats what you get for having English as a second language though.

And they definitely couldn't have borrowed that work from Greek right?

Citation needed, I am Greek and I've never heard that word before. I agree with the others, the Kraken is Norse mythology.

While its not used in the common vernacular, nexus is an English word that means connection.
example: My smart-phone serves as nexus between home and work.
The Nexus serves as a connection between Aiur (or Shakurus) and the Protoss base.
Edit: it comes from the latin word for bind... you can actually see the root of Nexus in the word conection

well we certainly don't have a lot of squid around here, but vikings went to greece and may have picked it up there.. makes sense to me. Giant squids aren't particulary unique in cultural lore though.

COEUS (Koios) The Titan god of the intellect as his name would suggest. He was also known as Polus (the pole) and probably presided over the axis of heaven in the north around which the constellations revolve.
And I play protoss. Happy to know my nick was well picked. -)
