Hi there TL,
I noticed over the years while I played Broodwar and now SC2 that Blizzard uses many Ancient Greek words for their alien-ish style. I list some up which I remember atm, I just wondered if some of you also got a few.
- πρώτος - prótos: first, first of a kind => Protoss
- χρόνος - khrónos: time => Chrono boost
- ἀρχόν - arkhon: (which) ruler, leader => Archon
- τήν Πύλον - tén pylon: (which) place => Pylon
- άγρια - ágria: wild, uncultivated, uncivilised (feminine): => Agria
Guys... What the heck.
I just participated in Ancient Greek classes and was amazed on how many parallels you can see to SC names and Greek vocabulary, and I just wanted to share this because it made me giggle and I hoped it would make you too. THOUGH it's clear that the prefix "chrono" is obvious, and the most terms are common in English, my surprise was how Greek words are exactly identical to SC proper nouns.
So please forgive my attempt, I'm just a bit shocked on how much hate is in this thread.

Nice picking up on this, Chrono boost is the best one here in my opinion.

Helios was a greek god of the sun. Hellion probably gets his name from him.
|
Isn't also the word "Thanatos" (Θάνατος, personification of death) used by the Dark templar?
|
Khrónos was the only one i've figured out
nice finds keep them comming
|
whats the movie where a guy (the dad?) keeps insisting that everything was originally from greece?
|
What you have actually discovered is that many English words have Greek origins. All the examples you brought up are common English words or prefixes.

Hellion is actually an upstart or rebellious person

Goliath is obviously from the Bible. I don't know where Banshee and Wraith come from (though obviously we know what they are), but obviously Thor, Odin, Loki come from Norse Mythology (along with Viking).
I dunno, it's pretty common for videogames to use things like that. Gotta make things sound cool, latin, greek, and mythologies are good for that sort of thing.

Raynor's BC is called the Hyperion . . . that counts right?
|
Thor's
Nvm Norse god I think lol.
|
Even "Sons of Korhal" in Broodwar is from the Bible, the "Sons of Korah" wrote a few of the psalms.
|
Colossus is also from ancient Greek mythology.
|
I thought that it's well known that protoss race is based on Greek myth and Terran race is based on Norse myth.
Protoss needs a unit like The Kraken. Imagine this: whenever the unit is being made, there's an alert (like nuke warning) that says: The Kraken has been released. Screw the mothership, give us the Kraken
|
Or y'know Colossus could be from that giant frickin' statute that they built over Rhodes. I don't think that it was actually part of any ancient Greek myth.
|
Archons were some sort of minister in Ancien Greece.
|
Unfortunately for you: 1. Chrono- is a prefix to many words involving time, such as chronology 2. Pylon is an english word meaning the exact same thing 3. Archon is an english word 4. Proto- is a prefix for many english words involving firsts, such as prototype 5. Agriculture
As already mentioned, you will find links like this in ANY random essay or even scientific paper because english has inherited a lot from greek anyways.

Writers tend to embellish or borrow from ancient civilizations all the time. The is especially apparent in fantasy games and RPGs. I used all sorts of mythology and language mishmashes when I translated video games for a living.

The word is of Greek origin and, yes, is not mythological in nature. But the Colossus of Rhodes isn't nearly the prime example. I believe the Colossi of Memnon (Egyptian) were around on the order of 1000 years prior to the one at Rhodes. I'm sure there are examples from times earlier than that, as well.
Anyways, we all know the real origin: + Show Spoiler +

You just said that Terran is based on Norse mythology and Protoss is based on Greek . . . then shouldn't the Kraken be a Terran unit?
