These map changes are beyond me. I'm all for adding new maps to stir up the pretty stale map pool, but not maps like these. Especially not if they're removing Shakuras in the same move because it's "boring".
If "interesting" gameplay at Blizzard HQ revolves around "alternative attack paths" and opening them via destroying rocks then goodbye to all ladder maps in major tournaments in a matter of weeks. Backwater Gulch is probably the worst ladder map ever devised, the games I've played on it so far and those I saw on streams were just plain bad. The map encourages gimmicky one-base play which certainly isn't "interesting" or has any entertainment value to spectators.
Let's hope that the feedback delivered here and elsewhere will convince Blizzard that they're not going the right way with their maps and their idea of what a good map should look like. The GSL and Iccup maps are so much better and I'd love to play on them on the ladder.

I'll kind of miss Shakuras for TvP, but fuck TvZ on that map.
|
I find it funny that Blizzard does not like people fast expanding, and finds it boring. In my opinion, if both players fast expand, then the games are less boring, because it is more likely that we will see a lot of the tech tree on both sides.

I really like the smaller mains on these new maps. Makes drop defense so much easier.
|
I don't know what are they thinking when creating those maps.
So when you spawn on Typhon Peaks on vertical positions and rocks are killed the distance between your natural and his natural is less that on steppes, and the choke is super small. I have no idea how is it possible to survive any tank/collosus push on that map in mid game.
They even made Shakuras so you can't spawn on vertical and distance here is even less.

Out of my two games on these maps one was close pos on slagpits and one was close poss on shattered temple. How these maps were added to the ladder is beyond me. They are just plain ridiculous.
|
How are they honestly expecting Protoss to have a macro game on Slag Pits vs Zerg?
|
Aaaah Blisterings gone
|
Backwater gulch has the wierdest natural ever T_T 1 rocks less and a smaller choke would be just as good i would say.

A couple of times now protoss has gone zealot / sentry and just walked past my defenses and force fielded my ramp, and I'm really not sure how to stop it. It's just so far from any defensible position. Looks like I'm going to have to prioritize creep spread... but then there's the matter of the backdoor. Ugh. Close positions are such a nightmare.
This.

Blizzard mindset. 1.22 PTR: Guise we have added 5 new mapz. Page 1-900 PTR forums: NEW MAPS TEH SUCKKK 1.22 Live: Thank god they didn't add the new maps 7 days later: hi guise we added the 5 new maps to live map pool bcz of good feedback on ptr.

Its an huge improvement as I feel.
SoW gone, BS gone... those maps sucked.
ok the new maps are far away from beeing as good as GSL maps or the good ICCUP ones, but they are better, without a doubt.
Typhon Peak, lots of gimmicks but overall a great map! I mean the rocks arent as bad as stated above. Look at XNC, there are lots of rocks and its still the best map. Typhon Peak is large, you can expand a lot and you have a lot of attackpaths to counterattack.
The Shattered Temple is a better map than LT.. mostly likely everyone will agree here.
Backwater Gulch. I like it a little, but there are two major problems with the map. Zergs having a hard time defending warpgatepushes and there are !!!closepositions!!! That must be a joke.
I cant say too much about it but it seems like this map forces you to 2base allin every game! Where is my 3rd? THEY STATED THAT THIS WILL BE A MACROMAP LIKE METALOPOLIS!!!?!?! Are you serious Blizzard? But overall its decent... better than SoW...

Which are the best maps for baneling busts? Because I'm not doing anything else with these maps as Zerg ):
|
I was playing them all last night, after flipping out at the loss of Shakuras and the "MOAR ROCKS!" mentality that these nincompoops have.
Shattered Temple is fine. I didn't like LT because of the cliff at the natural(s), and that's gone. So I'm happy. If you play Zerg on anything but close ground it's a decent map because of flanking routes and the way you can abuse them. But for Terran and Protoss it's familiar and still fine as well. Turtle macro Terran with Siege lines is very very good. But mass Marines is just as fine. For Protoss I'm really liking Blink Stalker play a lot. Minimal Colossi production and using excessive mobility.
But the other maps are absolutely fucking terrible. I really don't know what else to say about them. I'm actually not bothering with the ladder anymore. The friends that I play with are with me and we're just doing custom games on GSL, iCCup, and the older decent Blizzard maps*. At least until somebody gets their shit together.
I hope the designer(s) that made Shakuras aren't with Blizzard anymore, because if he/she/they are I'm honestly speechless as to their complete failure. This latest offering is bad. Very bad.
*See Shakuras, and only Shakuras.

At lest they removed Steppes from tthe map pool thats at least something.
Shattered Temple is an improvement of the map but it does not deal with the main problem: close positions suck for Zerg.
And how anyone can play macro on Slag pits is beyond me. How are you supposed to take a third? Okay I as a Terran can take a gold so I can expand towards my opponent. But how can Toss or Zerg take a third and defend it?
Backwater Gulch has some potential I think. If they remove one of the rocks at each base and rearrange the ramp so that it faces your natural it might be defend-able for a Zerg. (although I like it I dunno why ^^)
Typhoon peaks is strange. The middle of the map gives me a headache. But as far as I can tell it is playable.
And why the hell take Shakuras out? Granted I didn't like the map at all but it was kinda well balanced! This baffles me so much.
In the end I need to rearrange my vetos carefully.

it looks as if 98% of the SC community detests these new maps and is about to quit laddering or sc2 all together... why is blizzard turning into george lucas... coming up with this great game then trying to ruin it at the same time.. I hope they read TL because the new maps need to be gone & bring back shakuras
|
I'd like to advise everyone on this forum to actually open up a thread on the battlenet forums, and spam their forum full with complaints. And i mean actually creating a thread per person. they should get the message then hopefully since i doubt they read this forum throroughly.

So
98% of people are going to quit, is your prediction? Somehow i doubt it.

I like Typhon Peaksm LT is decent the other two i dont like... But why did they removed shakuras ... It was my favorite map by far...
|
Everyone seems to be for more macro games but are those type of games really that interesting? I mean there is allot of complaining about slag pits short rush distance while its not that shorter than that of metalopolis or lost/shattered temple. Appearantly blizzard believes these distances should be managable by any race. I play zerg but im pretty positive about these maps though I really feel blizzard should put in some GSL maps next time.
