The reason people voted the way they did in the Shakuras poll, was because they didn't know that close spawns were disabled.
And close spawns on that map would be absolutely awful. The two naturals are within spitting distance of eachother, and tanks can siege your mineral line from the low ground.

This is correct, had I known close spawn was not possible i would have voted like instead of dislike.

That post was taken so out of context it makes my brain hurt. That was when nobody had any idea that blizz made it so you couldn't spawn on close positions. If Shakuras did have close positions trust me every zerg would have downvoted it. Also I was pretty dead on accurate about Jungle Basin so maybe thats a little ironic.

Yeah my point. Why the hell would Blizzard call it a macro map then? Quoting them, "Metalopolis was one of two favorite maps across the different skill levels of players. We decided to introduce a very similar map, but slightly more macro heavy".
What the?

It seems Blizzard mappers don't get some of the basics, like, if you made two ways to reach the natural on Gulf, one rock-blocked and one open, the open one should be the longest path to go. Here this is just stupid because the two access are close to each other, both lead to the exact same place and so, just give a 2-3 seconds advantage.
Am i also the only one to feel that the new lost temple map tooks like 1 hour to be made? The center is just "empty" (3-4 bs objects but nothing else), making it looks like an amateur map.

Slag Pits is easily the worst map in the pool. Hardly any expos, gold is covered by rocks, and a useless tower at the center that sees practically nothing considering that even if your opponent is across their army will take the side routes automatically instead of going through the center. Also the map is the ugliest thing I've ever seen, I haven't disliked a map this much since Desert Oasis.

Yeah, they reason people freaked out about Shakuras is because of the crazy close rush distances CP, but no one knew you couldn't spawn close position, so using that poll isn't showing anything

Why are people surprised about this? People continue to have this misconception that blizzard wants the game to be fun for top level players and a spectator event. They probably are more interested in making it fun for the casuals to play IMO so these maps would be a natural choice for them.

What does a 'casual' player like? Imbalance? I honestly don't think they would care much about the maps, and if anything, would want bigger maps to get "super units" as they would call it, like the mothership, battlecruiser, broodlord, etc.
You can have a balanced map be small too. Just have to know how to do it.

Every time Blizzard opens their mouth it makes me lose faith

They also don't want to play any more than a 20 minute game(according to Dustin) so these maps are ideal.

i dont like slag pits

What a disaster. I suppose I'll FE speedling 2v2 now - I mean, that's what they designed the new (2v2) maps for, right?

Hm, that's actually a fair point. I guess I remember the unveil just getting mixed reactions and didn't think twice about the poll.
Maybe we should make another one now that Shakura's is out of the map pool.
What gets me is that with all the bitching about certain map's close spawn positions, and Shakura's proving - not only in theory, but actual practice - that forcing cross/far spawns is a viable option improving the map's balance... one really has to wonder why Blizz doesn't do it for other maps as well.

slag pits is a sad and cruel joke.

i really don't want to be needlessly negative but i played a game on slag pits and it will be my last. close positions in the map is just atrocious. quite apart from that i cannot see zerg ever winning close positions ever and i'm toss. even just removing close positions would make then map somewhat passable, i think i read somewhere that the rush distance in close positions was something like 24 seconds? honestly i don't know what they were thinking with this map
|
I guess I could add my two cents. Slag Pits can be a difficult map depending on spawns and that random narrow valley in center. But Shattered Temple is a great map. Had a couple games on it that map. Getting 3 bases is pretty easy. Good maps.
|
Shakuras was one of the best maps and they take it out and replace it with some crappy tiny map slag pits. The new LT is worse for toss and terran and makes zerg godly, still its still pretty good.
The other two maps are pretty damn awsome in my opinion especially backwater.
Would like to see Termenis and Crevasse added.
