Obviously, it's not all Starcraft related, but if you're curious as to MLG in 2011, then you should listen to this.
Some highlights: - Starcraft 2 to be 'right there' with Halo (no surprise) - Plan to release entire 2011 season schedule all at once (including hotels and such) - League of Legends discussed and Quake Live /might/ be at some events (sounds like Quake is more likely) - CS will /not/ be on the circuit in 2011 - Raleigh pretty much confirmed as a location for 2011 - Seattle mentioned as possible/probable location - Columbus referred to as if it already was a location (not surprising - Columbus has been a stop for several years now) - Throwback titles at different events (probably not of much interest to TL, but whatever) - Halo 2, GoW 1, DJ Hero (?) - Activision/Sony offered up a 'few hundred thousand' in prize money and staffing support to have CoD Black Ops on the circuit on the PS3; also Treyarch sounds like they're patching in LAN support for MLG - Combines will 'take a different shape' next year -> re-crafted into LAN center initiative MLG has been working on - Trying to find ways of working with WCG (no details yet); talking to the folks in Korea - VOD archives on the way; mobile phone platform for video archive as well - Rebuilding Gamebattles (apparently will 'hook' /directly/ into the certain games to allow for things like auto-score recording via Agora Games integration) - MLG Mad Catz controller - specs sent to Mad Catz, testing early in new year, replaceable components in controllers, same form factor for Xbox 360/PS3 (interesting) - 3 main titles for 2011 is the plan (no follow-up on exactly what the titles are, but based on interview, almost certainly Halo Reach, Starcraft 2, and Black Ops) - SSBB - will not be back on circuit in 2011; lack of support from Nintendo, hit or miss audience numbers, Mew2King issue didn't help, harder to get sponsors for as a result - Might be doing something targeted towards female gamers (no specifics) - Sponsors - no details until official announcement, some new additions, sponsor health 'very good', can't wait to introduce some of the new brands
|
eww CoD BO as a main game. otherwise everything looks pretty good, especially the couple hundred thousand prize money part
|
CoD BO isn't nearly as much fun to watch as MW2 in my opinion. Black Ops just has silly out of nowhere deaths due to RCxD and silly grenade mechanics, but at least MLG is getting some loot for it.
As long as SC2 is the main attraction MLG will do awesome.
|
I salute activision/sony for providing a huge prize pool and fixing up lan for MLG. Now we just need that activision/blizz would do the same
|
ignoring the Activision buyout of MLG (seriously kotick, stop getting in our faces) I really like MLG's future. Hopefully it continues to grow
|

This is a good point. It would be nice to see some Actizzard stateside support for these events. I am not a fan of CoD but if they do patch in LAN and provide some prize money, that is great news.
|
Can't watch the whole thing yet since i'm at work but from the highlights it looks really interesting and helpful. Schedules are always nice, it's sad that their main titles are still going to be games for consumers (except SC2 ofc).
What was the the m2k issue? I don't follow the smash scene at all, I mostly just watch melee vods because brawl is meh, just curious to know what was going on since we may be seeing a season without fighting games.
Also I am perplexed about quake live. Great game definitely, without a doubt my favorite fps to watch, but since it's MLG and I'm not sure how and if non-american teams will be flying their players over it looks just like an event to give rapha some free cash.
LoL would be bigger than most people think, the players' streams already have a huge number of followers, the real problem is riot's shitty way of handling tournaments. After seeing how the alpha is shaping up their observer mode is going to be horrible, without any of the common (and basically required) features.
|
Although I don't like COD, I think that it's addition with activision support is GREAT for MLG, which also makes the SC2 part stronger
|
I hope Quake gets the attention it deserves. So awesome to watch that. This is getting me excited for 2011. Hope I can go to at least one.
|
quake live in mlg just be so so sick

As long as SC2 is the main attraction MLG will do awesome. I doubt SC2 will be the main attraction, but that's not to say that is a bad thing. Halo and CoD both have a lot of mainstream popularity and generate a lot of viewers and revenue, and hopefully SC2 will also be able to benefit from that.
|
Never cared about Super Smash Bros. Brawl considering I always sticked to Melee but it's sad to see it go in such manner. If only Nintendo offered more support for competitive gaming, you would have thought they would join in after the succes of Melee in MLG.
A whole year of Black Ops and Reach yay.......
Oh well at least we have SC2 to look forward too.
|
No CS. No SF. Quake Live MAYBE (If Bethesda throws enough cash to promote Rage).
There is no way to take this as anything more than an overhyped Ad-fest, E3 with prizes. If this is eSports, then I am no fan of it.
|
|
|
An esports event without CS isn't really an esports event imo.
|
I liked the interview. It was much easier to listen too then the SotG interview w/ Lee Chen.
|
Let's hope they put in quake so all the console fps-people can see how bad they actually are
|
Logistically speaking, I don't see LoL being a game for all stops.
Other than that, it just seems to be a hype interview with nothing significant said. A whole lot of "maybe" and "we are trying" lines.
|
Always loved sundance. If you want to hear more of him you should check Lo3 vods where they interview him. <3
Looking forward towards 2011 MLG

w00t to vVv. Great news from MLG also!

the SSF4 community doesn't want their game to be at MLG because of past problems.
|
thanks for the highlights delo, some very goood and interesting news
|
Really hope League of Legends makes it to MLG that game has soo much potential to make it as a E-sport. Riot just needs to put their new patch out and I think it will explode in popularity.
|
League of Legends in MLG will be a disaster considering its lack of spectator mode, unbalanced gameplay and the fact that in EU and US combined theres about 5 competative teams with 5 players on each team means shipping them all out to the event will be very expensive. (Im a 1900 EU player)

Currently I agree, but I think their replay/spectator patch will be ready by spring. From their I do believe the game will have a shift and become more competitive.

No more CS, eh? If it's replaced by Quake I shed no tears.

I'd rather see Quake at MLG than CS since I absolutely hate the CS community. I'm glad that their game won't be at MLG and the day the game's competitive scene is dead (in fact, it's dying) will be a glorious day.

M2K was one of the best players. Him and his buddy ADHD ended up playing each other in an earlier MLG event which resulted in M2K losing and a money exchange had occurred. ADHD said that had been in an agreement to split all tournament winnings (since they regularly take top places in other tournies) so what he did wasn't technically match fixing.

call of duty not on pc.... id rather watch turtle sex:O

Well obviously. I just mean they won't be choosing the actual good games of the CoD series, the ones that actually show skill.

You mean Brood War?
Oh snap 96 pages.
No but seriously, if Treyarch and Activision are stepping up, then let Black Ops be the third featured game alongside SC2 and Reach. All will probably have very similar prize pursing per player (since Reach and BO are 4v4) and all will be featured equally in setup and stream. The SF4 players and community would like the game in, but Capcom is not letting MLG have it. And good to see all the Quake love around here as the side game, let it rain bitches.

MLG should hire you as their LoL commentator.

MLG gets criticism for favoring popular games over competitive games. It is now Quake's chance to prove itself! For the brotherhood of esports!!
|
Ugh,, more console FPS's with autoaim and no snap movement. How boring. Also no word on stream improvements
|
i never really played quake but it was an absolute blast to watch it at IEM cologne. so much skill goes into that game. i'd actually watch something besides sc2 at MLG if quake makes it into the rotation.
i play LoL a lot but i find speccing it to be boring. i don't think it's that imbalanced for competitive play, though. there's a banning mode, etc, not like each team can't pick/ban some of the best champs.
|
Holy Damn this is huge. I've been following MLG for years and only recently come to TL. Sundance is the man amazing guy, always gives sick interviews. But wow this is huge for MLG. They haven't done anything like this before and 3 title games!
And even a possibility of LoL!!
|
tbh i would love to see LoL at MLG, the ½ a year i played it i always hoped it will get and E-sport scene. Quake ofc because it's awesome
CS is sad, but i didn't exspect it, shame still
|
And btw for Black Ops it has competitive settings, such as banned perks and certain gun attachments and no kill streaks. Also it is on the Ps3 due to Sony sponsoring the event and from what I've read are putting a lot of money into it.
|
They should have a turbo mode for LoL. Like 2 or 3x speed. That might be fun to watch.

Not sure what you're talking about as air support has never been allowed in MLG and grenades have been banned several times through CoD's existence.
Thanks for this interview by the way. A lot of great info for an advocate and ex-MLG admin.

Glad this was re posted. Being a part of vVv we get to bring to the public some more or less exclusive information and sneak peeks of what is going on. I encourage everyone to listen to the losers bracket as they have MLG reps on the show and the CEO (Sundance) quite often.
I am glad Raleigh is confirmed. I am hoping the other locations finally get announced soon. I am hoping that SC2 continues to grow and from everything I have heard it seems as though it will be.

they should team up with Microsoft and bring back halo 2 competitive, cause halo: reach is meh. And they can't really bring back CS, because the market for it is slowly dying in the US. There needs to be one dominant DotA game and SC2, and they would be fine.

Thanks for the interview vVv - appreciate it! Awesome to see Sony chucking it $$$ for CoD BO even if i don't think it's that awesome of a game haha..
More $ for starcraft 2 is needed i think.. $6k just isn't that appealing. Any mention on specific prize pools?
|
glad to see brawl gone. that game has no place in e-sports and high level prize competition. the massive imbalance between characters is so ridiculous that players end up splitting all of the prize money anyway.
with such an imbalance, it leads to things such as what happened to mew2king and adhd, and it can't ever be fixed and stuff like that would just keep happening. i love brawl but im glad MLG grew a brain and got rid of it, though i bet it had more to do with the obvious lack of support from nintendo.

tbh it wouldn't suprise me, MLG talked about how eventough Brood War was so amazing the visual was a big turn off to get sponsors and new viewers, sucks really but when you think about it i can't really blame them. Sponsors want big shiny pretty visual games that gets alot of viewers outside of the hardcore
i don't agree with it, but that's how it is sadly

Activision and Blizzard's version of e-sports is not where fans should want e-sports to head.
I was thinking more like the korean bw scene, not MTV fatal1ty.

I really hope they do a event in Seattle. I would 100% go to a Seattle Event. I was thinking of going to a DC event next year too. I am a little disappointed with the line up changes to be honest, but I guess Competitive Gaming is changing. It will be weird to see a big event without Counter Strike, but if they pick up Quake I cannot complain.
Blackops and LOL is odd though. Neither games are built for Competitive play (don't wanna make fun of either game (LOL JK Blackops is lame)). I will support MLG either way and I think it is a good business move picking up really popular games, even if Competitive play isn't their focus.
Lets hope Gaming keeps on growing wether it be Black Ops or LoL or Starcraft 2, even though i'm Confident Starcraft 2 will be their biggest game on the circuit.
GL MLG. Hope 2011 is even better then 2010.
|
As a 4 year member of MLG. I can tell you that they don't want games that are older. MLG is a business that has to be as profitable as possible and using older games, even though they are very competitive, doesn't intrigue newer esports followers. Oh and also, event in seattle would be sick, they had one here in 2005 but I didn't follow MLG then.

I played the game for years, its dead, the community will never be larger than it is today, and the logistics of teams of 5 taking up the computers non stop just won't work, not to mention they'd need to find commentators/camera men who know how to spectate CS, which is a lot harder than it sounds. It wont happen. Quake makes sense, there two guys, the community exists and camera work is easy.
On December 24 2010 03:09 ExoFun wrote: Please CSS support it.
Awful game, not a great spectator game to watch either, considering graphics are between COD and 1.6, and gameplay as well. Its the middle child that'll never get attention that it largely does'nt deserve either.

CS, well I've addressed that.
SF, Capcom won't help them out, otherwise they would have put it in over Tekken last year, its unfortunate but its not MLG's fault, and your second sentence is just an utter pile of crap if you've paid attention to esports whatsoever, so I guess you're not a fan.

That is so far from the truth, the community wants their game to get big and make money so people can make a living off of it, MLG's not adding it because of issues with Capcom not the community.

Gameplay isn't very balanced in general compared to HoN or DotA, nor does it take nearly as much skill, also it looks like utter crap compared to HoN and DotA so that can't really be used as an argument.
There aren't as many competitive teams around, spectator mode doesn't exist when it does in HoN and DotA, there are already professional sponsored teams that exist for HoN/DotA, etc.
I don't see how the Baron argument matters, its the same setup as every dota game in the past where the roshan-super monster type of guy is located along the river, nobody has ever complained that the positioning of it was imbalanced, if they did they're pretty damn stupid as well.
There are many reasons that LoL wouldn't work, but yeah map imbalance would play none of that, gameplay imbalance might but I don't think MLG cares about gameplaly imbalances (We ARE talking about the people who put on SSBB and Black Ops among other games). The game itself just isn't ideal in my opinion, if they put one in I hope they wait until Dota 2 comes out since thats made properly by icefrog, if not they talk to S2 games and hook up HoN because that is currently the most competitive.
PS: I'm gonna be pretty sad if they don't come back to DC =\ guess I won't be able to make it to any MLG's this upcoming year otherwise.

for some reason I'm hoping that the new sponsors are coca cola and an auto maker. Not sure why but I guess to me they feel like something that only big sports and big events in general get(or highly specialised by and auto maker e.g.). Sure there is the Lexus or KIA or whatever it is that you sometimes see on monitors in the background at GSL(in breaks between games you can see the screens behind tastosis) but sure would be nice to have sponsors like that outside Korea.
