don't think the comparisons on iccup are reasonable

i got to D+ but then again i only won a couple of macro games, the rest were just general rts knowledge (when to expand etc). in sc1 you can literally get to super high ranks by nothing but mechanics

There's always going to be bad info out there and ofc no one but the top top players who are still playing a lot are going to understand the game at a deep level, but I find it hilarious that op is complaining about the diamond advice with all the gold level and lower advice on the forums. Everyone knows how to play the game. It's not like the diamond people posting are trying to help the top pros, it's usually someone in silver/gold/plat trying to move up.

I don't understand the point, really. Is TL.net meant to be a resource for top players? If so then there should be a "top players only" forum that mere diamond level players can't post in. Is that going to attract a bunch of top players to come and post, or will they more likely just talk amongst themselves on Bnet, ventrilo, etc any way?

Honestly I've been following and posting here since the start of SC2 beta, and I've never really seen any stunning insight from top players posted here. I've seen top players come and complain about certain features or certain imbalances, but rarely see any thing posted that would actually help even a bronze level player, much less another top player, improve at the game. Oh there's no doubt that these e-celebrities are in a class of their own, but that doesn't automatically result in great discussion or useful knowledge. In fact it almost seems like common sense that the best players are the ones who are spending the least amount of time on a forum when they could instead be playing more games.

If you want to give special props and status to top players, great, they've earned it. Ask them to write editorials or articles or give them their own "pro players onry" area. But don't act like the discussion from Diamond level players is some how bringing TL.net down. Most players are not even diamond level, and most diamond level players probably can learn the most from other mediocre players, simply because top players aren't really saying too much that's useful.
Don't let me say this, but you're no worse than me; it's crazy.

The main pint of this thread is obviously not the level of Diamond players because the game is new so the level is quite low everyone can agree.

What'is interesting in this topic is how can we have some real interesting stuff in the forum because right now with all the new members every thread is flooded by whine and stupid advice :

"How can i beat Mutas magic box with Thors" -> "Thors >>> Mutas, you are a noob" etc.

Why not create a sub forum with a Elistist Jerk forum rules, i mean not a forum with only Top diamond access but a forum heavily checked by the Mods to ensure whine, spam and already said stuff are deleted/banned ? That would be avoid to read 50 pages to find 1 interesting post.

That works quite well for Wow why not for SC2 ?

Totally agree. I'm pretty sure I had a rather more impassioned and explicitive version of this in the blogs, but you said it much more eloquently ^_^

I think most of the problem stems from not having real rankings, this is exactly how Blizzard wants everyone to feel. They want people to feel like they are super awesome and highly ranked. It has the unfortunate side effect of people becoming full of themselves and giving bad advice because even though they think they are high end players it isn't the case.

I really hope the current ladder system changes.

I'am not sure that ranking is 100 % relevant for talking about strategy because lot of "top players" are just hammering the ladder by playing 50 games a day ( i mean custom + ladder), people from low div can also provide some good ideas.

Just coming from the standpoint of not a diamond player but a human, much of this OP has merit. But it fails in that the post itself, regardless of whatever amazing starcraft player approves it, just reeks and stinks of elitism. The more i read it the more certain points seem to have sound logic, but in general it could have been said in a way that didnt alienate 97% of the player base.

saying that a player who isnt a shitty scrub will have more than 1 build order to take to the ladder is also alienating 97% of the player base, what's your point

I tried to convince my friends that getting into diamond was hard because i got into it first. I was one cool dude.

My faux awesomeness disappeared after they installed the game, played a for a couple weeks, and easily made Diamond themselves.

Even if that was true it wouldn't matter. The top players let their gameplay speak for them, and then their matches and tactics are discussed on death on the boards, so that way the top tier dispenses their knowledge without even having to post a word on the forums.

Things are only truly difficult the first time. It took the worlds mightiest power years and years to build the nuclear bomb, now anyone can do it.

so it si just the same? I know jack shit of SCII but am doing reasonably good for a casual player just because my mechanics are C- worthy

i'm 400 diamond, was 500 but had a slump. plus i've only played about 60 1v1 matches total

i'm a pretty bad player and the only 1v1's i win are against noobs. i really don't even attempt to counter my opponent - i just go mass marine/tank/medivac every game and get stomped against decent opponent.

there are many many terribad diamond players at >500.

Good post. Yes there's plenty of "garbage" threads and posts indeed. I like Qxc's idea, maybe it can be done in a different medium than a thread? With that said I respect the "lesser players" who backs up their suggestions with a lot of testing, providing replays and accurate stats.

I feel like Diamond is WAY to easy to get into.

I mean I'm sure it is going to change when the game comes out, but I feel like there are a lot of people in Diamond that shouldn't be in Diamond. Like me. Someone like me who is pretty terribad is in Diamond, and better than a lot of players he faces in diamond. Diamond should be something for the best of the best, and platnum should be standard for everyone else.

Hopefully when the game gets out for longer things fix themselves, or blizzard should make some changes.

I'm 666 Diamond. THAT is badass!

I entirely agree though that Diamond players are just better players than Platinum, but you know... not everybody can be a pro.

I'm a 940 point diamond player and pretty much all I have is baneling bust. I have <50 APM and am terrible at macro of any kind. Ladder rankings are kind of a joke.

There are the pros, there's bronze league noobs, and there's everyone else.

ICCup had it right, most players should be D or D+, the difference between low diamond and mid silver is almost nothing, it's a slightly better understanding of what things are harder for average bad players to counter. (It could also be the decision to play protoss instead of zerg.)

Leagues pretty much exist to satisfy the millions of "I'm not even going to make an effort" players, many of whom came over from WoW and rest their fingers on WASD while playing. Figure out a basic game mechanic that's explained in the manual, put a couple of wins together, get promoted from bronze to silver.

It's like trying to have accurate rankings of a group of basketball players where you have about 40 NBA players, 500 middle school kids, and 2 million six-year-olds. How do you divide those into balanced groups? You kinda can't.

The comparison between iccup and sc2 really only serves to give you an idea of how bad people are at sc2 compared to the original. The reason it took months of hard work to get to even C- is because of how fucking good everyone on iccup is. Everyone on iccup played a lot of SC, followed the proscene (to some degree), and knew the current trends in different matchups.

Right now the rankings on SC2 mean very little. Acknowledging that someone who's >1000 diamond is pretty good at the game is about as far as one can go. Until the game has been out for a year and the player base becomes skilled and very familiar with the game, ranks mean so little because there aren't nearly enough solid players.

and rest their fingers on WASD while playing.

Grid style hotkeys exist for a reason. I rest my fingers on WASD because that's where my hotkeys are.
