I know Sundance said that increasing the prize pool was "up to us" as in buying the stream upgrade or a shirt.

If I decide to upgrade the stream OR buy a shirt, how will they know I'm doing so because I'm wanting to support SC2?

Is this a serious question?

I wouldn't have posted it if I didn't want an answer. That by default makes it a serious question.

Now maybe you can let me know what fucking purpose your post serves.

What he means is if we want to increase the prize pool and support e-sports you have to put money into it. AKA buying services/products related to it.

Now you can't buy something from MLG and be like "I only want this money to starcraft 2." That isn't how companies work. But obviously if you give MLG money they will have more money to put towards the tournaments they host.

You ask this stupid ass question then rage at someone who calls you out on it. The point is to support MLG. (which in turn supports SC2)

Like every company on the planet they keep records of things like merchandise sales and PPV sales. So they will know.

I don't see how that is trolling, and I don't think people appreciate being called trolls (unless he really does have a history of doing so, which I am not familiar with).

His question really wasn't that bad but I feel it was misinterpreted... unless you guys did interpret it correctly and I misinterpreted it. I don't think he was literally saying that MLG should take his money and only spend it on SC2... I believe he was instead asking whether or not they know who is supporting MLG.

For example, if 1,000 sc2 fans buy T-shirts and 100 halo reach fans buy T-shirts, do they realize that there are more sc2 fans supporting MLG? That may be important to know because they would likely want to have larger prize pools for the games that the most people watch and support.

So once again, I think his question was basically asking something along the lines of "Does MLG keep track of who is supporting esports so that they can focus more on the games that give them the most benefits?" but once again, I may have misinterpreted.

You really think this multi million dollar company does not collect viewer information for each stream or each different item of gear/clothing? I have a strange feeling they keep track.

Is your $10 all put 100% in the SC2 prize pool? Hell no, that's not how things work in business. There are other expenses, and whatnot. But if SC2 keep outselling all other games on merchandise and has more stream viewers its obvious they should focus on that more, thus you will be supporting SC2. It's all basics.

I don't understand. If you get your whole city to watch. Sundance will go to some companies and get more money. Then that money can be used to increase the price pool. Isn't it that simple.
Viewers = sponsor money.

Edited in, and I also don't think that Starcraft alone will get a price increase. It seems they wanna keep it the same as Halo atleast. So unless they get a specific offer from someone (like sony/activision did to get them to make Black Ops on the PS3 <- a game, they offered lots for that. So that makes it possible to have a game). Someone could do that for Starcraft like I will give you $200,000 if you play our commercial x times during the Starcraft broadcast. But if it's general, then it will be spread.

Also wanna recommend a podcast from VTGaming. They did one with Sundance a while back and it was very enjoyable. Good questions aswell. I searched google, tl and vt's websites but couldn't find it, hopefully someone else will.

Companies are where the "blocking" happens. They have certain advertising budgets, and usually a relatively small amount of discretionary stuff for wierd things like starcraft. That really leaves companies that have event budgets and nerds in their target market. Energy drink companies, snack food, gaming equipment, etc. Then you have to convince them to sponsor -your- event, and furthermore, you need to convince them that people will go and that their sponsorship will be portrayed in a credible way. There's a lot of steps involved, to say the very least.

Hello guys, first time posting on TL It is actually possible for companies (NPO often do this) to create programs where money earned is reinvested in a specific account. For example, MLG could sell T-Shirts and state that all profits made will go to increase the SC2's prize pool. This allows people to encourage the game they like.

I am inclined to agree with pudge. Call me a PC elitist, but I sure as hell dont want to support a shitty game like Halo reach, which suffers from massive amounts of consolitis. People playing that game dont have a 10th of the skill or strategy that Quake 3 players like Rapha and Cooler have.

No they don't. But they do have sick teamwork. Something a game Starcraft doesn't have. I get were you are coming from. But without Halo-->No MLG-->No Starcraft 2 on MLG pro circuit.

haha right on. The funny thing is that Karthane tried to make you feel dumb and he's the one that misread your question.

I think he meant its "up to us" to get money to his company so he can make the event bigger and bigger. Obviously that will only benefit SC2 by proportion.

^ Now that is a true troll post. Obvious attempt to derail anything mlg related to a console vs pc fight.

Should of asked sundance if there would be more commercials than just hotpockets, doritos and oldspice this year. I honestly dont know how many more times i can watch hotpockets commercials without going insane and setting something on fire. Ive never even eaten them before and I put off by the brand now. lol.

Haha, can I just reiterate this for the lamens view?

Companies keep DETAILED accounting records of every dollar that comes in an goes out. The budgeting process does not entail spending a specific percentage of available dollars based on where dollars were earned.

The number of $$$ for any given prize pool is a MADE UP number based on the total available dollars, and the range of an "equal share" prize pool at MLG aligns on an individual basis to a reasonable salary available to each player.
-Sundance explained this exact topic himself, I'm wondering if people didn't listen to the interview and just started posting.

Well I didn't enjoy this last one as much. To be honest I didn't enjoy either of the MLG guests that much. I prefer the episodes where the focus is on strategy, and game play, but everyone has their likes and dislikes about everything. Great job SOTG, keep it up, I love what you guys are doing!

I hope they keep those commercials tbh.

They should get better ads because the suicides are probably decreasing the stream numbers.

The buns ad and the slapping ad have to go. I can't support esports and endure such torture at the same time.
