Replay Round-Up is on hiatus for a little while to focus on State of the Game and to play more. Sorry.

Replay Round-Up is a throwback to the golden days of audio-commentaries. I've been recording myself privately the past couple of days in order to work on my solo-casting (as its quite hard and different from casting with a co-caster) so I decided why not make a small side-project with this stuff and get community feedback at the same time?

Packaged with the audio-commentary you will find the replay that I cast. Make sure to load the replay and pause at the 10 second mark. I'll do a countdown, and then we'll begin. I will try to bounce around to different styles, match-ups, and servers and also try to choose interesting games. If you have any games you want to suggest feel free to comment!

I'll work on this OP over the next day or two adding in art and what not but for now I'll keep it simple. The audio quality should be significantly better in EP3 as well -- let me know. As always, feel free to criticize please (as thats why I'm doing this! )

Expect a new episode each and every day for the next couple of weeks, uploaded and posted at 04:00 GMT (+00:00).

If anyone would be so kind I'd like some art to freshen up this post as well as a quick audio intro. Both could be western themed but I don't really care much about the design elements other then that. I'll probably use the first one I get. Either PM it to me or post in the page here. Thanks! I'll give you some promotion on the cast and other places where my voice shows up -- can't really afford to pay you for your services at the moment :x

I always thought 'why don't people make audio commentaries anymore'

they're imo much better than streamed casts

edit: I know this was just the first one but I used to enjoy the race-focused audio casts, just my input :D

You have done so much for the starcraft 2 community in such a short period of time. Keep it up!

For critique: Feels like your voice is often on the same level and its hard to note if you're excited for something or not. So when a big fight actually comes along its just another regular moment in the match - It shouldn't be. It should be the most important moment of the match and that should be reflected in your voice with excitement. It also feels like you're trying to be too exact in the fight moments and count X units instead of portraying the overall progress of the fights and what abilities are used and cute little micro tricks.

actually I disagree with that critique, excited and elevated voice is imho for livecasted tournament games, in this type of audio commentary I wouldn't mind excitment per say but I much prefer a calm and analytical approach, maybe even pausing the game at times etc.

basically day[9] would make awesome audio commentaries while tasteless makes awesome live casted tournament commentary, in my very humble opinion

I'd just like to echo the appreciation of the big things you've been doing in the SC2 community.

Now, I understand that you would like to improve your solo casting so my gripe is not really so much about your quality as a caster but it is in the sound quality. I had to use my speakers because when I had my headphones on I heard all the little popping 'P' sounds from the microphone and also hear the crackling of saliva in your mouth. Usually your producer for something like the Day9 party or even with MLG handles that with you but now you're on your own. Get a wind screen for your mic if don't already have one and move it a wee bit further away from your face.

I'm wicked nit-picky about these kind of things and know that I'm more than likely in the minority. Just wanted to give my two cents, since this is kind of a learning experience for you.

Again, I can't echo enough how much I appreciate what you help do for e-sports and all the free entertainment you provide.
I enjoy watching more than playing.

Awesome work JP. Looking forward to more. Video commentaries are nice, but audio commentaries make you feel like you're actually watching the game.... well you kinda are but its a replay, but hey you get the point.

I agree with Midj on the sound quality, I think it could be higher and I think if you can do that it would improve the cast quite a bit. I believe DjWheat or another experienced caster talked about microphone quality differences and the fact that good microphones cost quite a penny but do make quite a difference at the same time. I don't know how your setup is and what you want to invest. If I had better memory, I'd try and reference it.

Other than that, I was listening to your audio commentary (listened to the first two). And I would love to hear the sound of the game in the background, it would give a better feel what's going on. Your commentary, necessarily, is high level, you can't mention every single bullet fired, but the sound would add a lot of details. Sounds like a command center landing, battles with the different unit sounds... you mention about players building certain buildings, clicking them for their own unique sound would help with the focus of the listener.

I am also in agreement on the excitement thing. I view such an audio commentary as you do as something suitable for live casting. If I wanted analysis commentary on a game I would make sure I can see with my own eyes what's happening. But I can see the other camp's sanity on the issue as well Boils down to what we're all looking for.

Just watched episode 1, nice and clean, good cast.

Just one minor quip, you were a bit behind on catching buildings being placed down (ie. such as the forge and spine crawlers, They were 50%+ done building before you mentioned them, I can't recall if you were in a middle of a long comment and simply left them to be said later, but it's not a major problem, probably just the nature of where your camera was/wasn't)

About Game 3 (PvZ on Scrap Station)
+ Show Spoiler +
Man it's like they don't like to tech, P stayed on gateway units ALL game, colossus would have been so good against the 9000+ spine crawlers, upgrades definitely won P the game though, the +3wep, +2armor blink stalkers were tearing through the Z army which had only +1carapace

Nice replays and nice commentary, thanks for the work.

The only thing I would say is to try and make short stabs at information instead of continuously spewing information, especially considering the fact that the viewer is controlling the camera.

What does it matter how I loose it?

I know it's included, and that it is a feature, but I see the advantage of the audio commentary as not needing the video screen.

fair enough it's just if he had game sounds in the audio, someone who is also watching the replay would almost definetly find it annoying to have to disable their sound

You're missing the point of audio commentaries, at least with this kind. It's not supposed to be like listening to a soccer game on the radio.

It sounds better to me, but I didn't think 1/2 were bad sound quality wise.

This is awesome, thanks a bunch for doing these. I enjoy the audio-replay format way more than the youtube commentary style that's gotten popular. You're a very good commentator as well and I'm looking forward to future episodes. Also I had no idea 14 hatch could stop reaper bunker rush so easily, that was pretty awesome by Check.

Yes, I realized that... too bad it doesn't combine.

I don't think I am missing the point. The obvious comparison would be to listening a soccer game on the radio. But it's up to JP. And it seems from all the comments in this thread, that it works well, so I am not criticizing that.

edit: Just to burden you some, JP, some media formats support multiple audio streams ;-) muahaha. Gonna listen to ep3 now, and see about the sound quality

edit2: Listened to ep3 now. I can't hear much of a difference in sound quality. I listened alternating bits of ep2 and ep3. Maybe ep2 has some slight maxing out of the volume.
Other feedback: In my mind, you formulate sentences very clearly and try to give it a narrative with variation and the like. I have the idea that this is not the way to go about it. If you mention that two Thors are left standing after battle (ep2 iirc) you don't need to mention their exact health levels. If you mention 'very low on health' or 'in the red' or healthy, it is 'a lot' easier/faster to interpret which makes listening less of a chore. The action is fast and conveying this in short snappy messages I think gives a much easier read on the situation by the listener. Saying 'three marines left standing', 'player x seems to go for a fungal growth'. Plenty of things you say do help read the situation. Status of tech development, bases being mined out. Some of the talk is your opinion on how players should play or things you expect when it's missing like upgrades. That doesn't contribute anything for a listener. hmm reading/listening back the criticism perhaps isn't valid in some points but take from it what you can (:

Ahh it's so enjoyable to have someone commentating games calmly (apart from the Day9 Dailies*).

Was watching the 3rd episode and kinda felt like I was out of sync at the beginning even though I didn't really do anything. Had to catch up with you which was a bit of a trouble. But I guess that problem lay on my end as none else experienced that ;P

The game itself was... well perhaps decent. The Zerg played rather bad in my opinion. I didn't see a single benefit from the Spine Crawler. Not a single.

Throwing in another audio channel with in-game sound would be kind of a chore, especially because I'm doing this because of how quick and easy it is to get episodes out :x

Perhaps down the line!

Episode 3 sounds much better in terms of audio quality.

Not a big deal, but somehow you seem to get like 1 or 2 seconds ahead while I'm watching the replay, not sure how that happens but it's not a big deal since I just fast forward a second.

Either way, loving these audio commentaries, thanks a lot for the time/effort put into it.

Personally I enjoy these much more than streamed commentaries, because you can control the camera yourself and focus on details while still being aware of general game status because of commentary.

Ep. 3 had great sound quality, but 1 or 2 weren't bad either. Keep up good work JP!

Way more interactive than watching vods/streams. There is a need for both. Sometime you just want to relax and watch a game, then video is great (or you're at work and can't really start SC2 ). Sometimes you want to be a bit more engaged and then this is the way to go. Good commentaries, keep up the good work!

One problem, one glaring problem- you didn't know who JF is!!

Kinda jks, but part of being a good commentator is throughly knowing who the players are before hand. Thanks for these!

Oh wow thats terrible about being able to hear that. Which episode was this in? I'll work on fine-tuning that for sure as its unacceptable and disgusting! lol

The third one I believe. I just noticed it because I had my headphones on for it so I figured I should point it out. I'll have to go back and check on the others after I'm done work for the day.

Just saw ep4, is it just me or are the audiocasts a bit quiet? I had to turn down in game sound while maxing out the audiocast sound.

Imo youtube is good when you are on a computer without sc2, but if you are on one there is no reason to not watch a replay!

JP,

I'm not sure what your goal is with these audio replays. In my perspective, there's two types of VOD's. The first is the entertainment type, like watching a sports game. The other is the instructional and informational type, which aims to dig and recover some deeper meanings and builds from replays. To me it actually sounds like you're leaning towards the entertainment kind, and herein lies the problem. The most popular casters for SC2 (HD, Husky, Day9) all appear to be thoroughly enjoying those replays, and viewers can share that with the casting. In order to be truly entertaining, you need more personality in your casts. To be frank, your casting is currently very monotone and you overuse the phrase "x is gonna go ahead and do this. go ahead and get away, etc". Everyone likes listening to tasteless because there aren't many dull moments with him, he's always vibrant, funny, and clear. If you're aiming to entertain you have to let loose, JP.

With that said I think it's a good concept and I hope to see you improve.

Hey wait a minute, I enjoy these a lot. It's like analytically watching a replay, except I've got somebody next to me sharing his thoughts. I don't need shouting and over the top excitement to enjoy a caster...

edit: and it's much better that JP knows what he's talking about, unlike casters who get all excited yet haven't the faintest clue what they're talking about

I like these a lot, JP, they are thoroughly awesome!

I really like being able to control the replay myself and view whatever part of the map I want to, while still having the commentary going. Whenever I watch a cast of a match, I always look at the minimap and go "man, I really want to click on that spot!" but this totally solves that problem.

I would consider replay round-up more convenient than watching a cast, for the reason stated above as well.

Keep 'em coming is right, so do it!

JP, my question to you:

Are you watching on faster? I have been syncing it with you on faster, and for some reason yours seems to go 5% faster than mine or something. Over time you get way ahead of me, and I have to burst faster x2 or even x4 until i catch up to what you last saw. Is there something different between our clients?

I'm watching on faster as well. I'm not really sure why the lack of synchronization is occurring. I'll try to do more timestamps throughout the cast and maybe it'll iron out. It might be the compression or something too -- I'm not sure really hah

It's Battle.net 2.0 I think. Often times one's client (yours or JP's) will stutter and I think that'll cause some time difference? I dunno that's my guess because I get these lag spikes every so often myself.

Someone should make an app to manipulate winamp/media player within sc2 for these

I know a few people have asked for it but please don't put in game sounds. Your voice + sc2 sounds provides a clear crisp audio track. And I don't want to turn off game sounds because then it matters more how well we sync your audio track.

Just started watching these. I've been watching a lot of Day[9], HDstarcraft and Huskystarcraft lately and it guzzles bandwidth... Doing shoutcasting this way is much better IMO. More feedback will come once I've watched all of the ones posted :D

Just checked out EP5, and the audio is fantastic on the headphones! I don't know what you did but there was a noticeable decrease in the amount of white noise, popping P's etc.

Again, I have to try really hard to find criticisms. When you pronounce etcetera, its 'et setera' not 'ec setera', super minor and barely noticed it because the game was fantastic.

You're spot on for noticing everything! I often find myself watching a commentary on the youtubes and see movement towards an expo, but the caster is too concentrated on the outcome of the fight that they noticed earlier. That didn't happen once with this, minus missing upgrades that pop up, but that is to be expected because of the speed both players are going at.

Great stuff JP, keep it up!

May I suggest you spec/obs some games, while following the action as a spectator?

Then we can just tap 3 or whatever to follow your camera movements? (That works with spectators as well right?)

You could do your recording while spectating, or after. Just a different way of doing it.

Yeah true. On average I observer anywhere from 5-15 games with EG, Root, and other random players a day. Good idea

After watching all 5 of these commentaries over the last couple of days I've decided it's time to give some feedback.

Well done with these. You have a great voice for commentating, you know what your talking about and you don't get over excited. Also, I don't know how you made your audio track only play thru my center speaker, but thanx. It gives the track a bit of extra clarity.

Your 5th replay was missing one small thing which your 1st and 2nd did quite well. In the first couple of replays you guided the player on where to look as you were speaking. For example you would say 'over in playerX base you can see that he has added on another y, and back in playerZs expo he has just placed a turrent in the mineral line to deter harass' or something similar. A lot of the time during these replays you did a very good job of helping me to keep my attention where it mattered. In the 5th replay there was very little of this. You were still obviously keeping an eye on everything and were saying when people were taking key upgrades etc, but you didn't give the same level of positional guidance. This lead me to watch the battles more and only know what people were doing (macro) via your speech (and info tabs).

Considering 'positional guidance' as a tool for use in audio casting, another tool which I feel you could incorporating into your analysis quite well would be the info tabs. You could for example say 'On the resource tab you can see that the food counts are quite close at 50:56' or 'Looking at the units lost tab you can see that that initial attack was very costly to playerY. He only managed to kill 6 units and has lost over 30 himself.' By directing the player which tab to look at and then drawing an opinion based on it you may have another tool to play around with.

Overall I love how these are coming along. Now I find that as soon as i've got my Day9 daily fill this thread is my 2nd stop before I move onto other things. <3

It's a shame that you cant watch a replay, and then save the replay of you watching the replay as a spectator. This would be a great addition to replays for a lot of reasons.

Is it possible that replays run up to a maximum speed because they don't have to be synced with another player? So if JP can run the game more smoothly than you, you might fall behind in the replay . . . or maybe running with vsync on slows replays down. Just throwing a couple ideas out there

I love this format. Being able to move around the camera and watch different tabs is really, really nice. So sick and tired of casters sitting on the APM tab all game long when they should be looking at income or army size.

Those nuke bluffs from TTO were amazing. I didn't realise you could actually cancel a dropping nuke. The fact that you can really lets you get your troops in the best position possible. This adds a whole new dimension to the game for me :D

Maybe if you upload it so we can stream it there'll be more interest. Just a suggestion

I could just upload the audio by itself separately but then it is two clicks to download both. Hmmm.

I would like to see some more ZvP and less TvT
Great commentating though. Sometimes you miss some things when there's a lot going on, but no biggie. And btw I think SjoW is pronounced more like "Show" and less like "S-JAO".

This is great, it's a nice change to the more standard VODs, where you sometime feel the "camera-guy" misses something.

And I think your doing good, on the commentary side of things...

I would prefer zip to rar since is handled by windows without any additional software.

I has a question. I kept watching the replay in faster, and the audio at normal but it kept constantly getting out of balance. The audio kept getting ahead of the replay, is it someting on my end? it was the check prime game vs JustFake. Am i doing something wrong?

I'm using 7zip for that. It can't make rar files but it can read them. Free to use, and it's a one time install anyway.

I've heard a lot of people talking about this. I'm running on Faster and never changing. I wonder if my PC is lagging in some spots or something and that effects the timer.

When I had some background tasks running while listening/watching the replay I went out of sync. So I'd say that people having the problem should lower their settings so the game runs 100% smooth.

Fantastic work, JP. I definitely like this format. It's nice to be able to pay attention to whatever I'm interested in at any given point in time, while still being alerted to important information via the commentary. I'll also echo the comments about it feeling like you're in the same room watching the replay (now that I type this it seems kind of creepy, but I hope you understand). I'm looking forward to more.

Hey JP loving it I'm wondering since some of the replays are shorter and easier to upload why not do bulk episodes like you did with the first 5? I watch the first 5 like back to back 8D. What ever you decide keep doing it, because I love this way of casting Casters don't always catch everything and it's just awesome to be able to see multiple things happening at once

Yeah, I'm not sure what this is. I play with everything on low so there are no skips or anything. Perhaps during some of the bigger fights it skips for a second? I'm really stumped

I'm not sure, but my replays seem to run without problems. I usually just fast forward a bit whenever you say something revealing exactly where you're at (like, something is at a certain percentage, or unit x just went down).

Are you doing any sort of sample rate converting? Like recording at 48 KHz and compressing them down to 44?

[EDIT: I'm playing with everything on low as well, 200 FPS ftw :p]

I love the show, good replays and commentary. Will be waiting for more!

Although I would like to suggest when you archive episodes, list the races being played. As a Zerg play i could care less about a PvP or a TvP and it would be much easier filter out the VoDs if they were listed.

If anyone would be so kind I'd like some art to freshen up this post as well as a quick audio intro for the casts. Both could be western themed but I don't really care much about the design elements other then that. I'll probably use the first one I get. Either PM it to me or post in the page here. Thanks! I'll give you some promotion on the cast and other places where my voice shows up -- can't really afford to pay you for your services at the moment :x

Perhaps you shouldn't always watch the replays before you make a commentary although I understand the urge to do a quality check.

One minor thing I would suggest is standardizing your countdown to unpause. It ranges from a slow count from 3 to a fast count from 5. Really the only thing I have noticed thus far.

That was an interesting game. + Show Spoiler +
I can't wait to see Nydus being adopted more in Zerg play (even if it did fail here)

A lot of the games you care casting are quite short. I would like to see some slightly longer games too. Maybe around the 25min mark instead of 10-15. This might be mechanically problematic for you tho with some of the viewers who are struggling to get their game speed up to scratch. (I don't think it's codec based, because I seem to have no issue on the 2 i7 PC's I have viewed your matches from. More likely it is the viewers PCs not keeping up. Worth a try tho I guess).

Don't concern yourself too much about the popularity of your games (I've noticed you mention it before). It takes time to build up a fanbase. Most of the criticism you have received in this thread should show that the issues people have are mostly technical in nature, and that your casts themselves are well recieved.

One question I would ask to all the people who are getting out of sync: Do you end up generally getting ahead of his commentary or falling behind? Or is it inconsistent?

For me it seems completely random.

I am able to run the game at ultra with ~55FPS so I hiked it down to high and I still notice it. Somewhat odd, maybe JP can contact Blizzard about this since it is their game.
I enjoy watching more than playing.

I always fall behind, but this isn't uncommon for me-- I've often watched replays with friends and started at the same time, and I always fall behind. I believe that the reason is that if your PC can't keep up 100% with the replay, there are very small lags which are almost unnoticeable, but add up over the period of the replay, slowing it down over time.

Just need to pop the x2 every time JP says something you haven't seen yet. =P

I have to pop into x2 every now and then as well. Overall its not too big of a deal sometimes. One game I was somehow around 30 seconds behind somehow =(. I run the game on low too.

One question I would ask to all the people who are getting out of sync: Do you end up generally getting ahead of his commentary or falling behind? Or is it inconsistent?

I always fall behind, but this isn't uncommon for me-- I've often watched replays with friends and started at the same time, and I always fall behind. I believe that the reason is that if your PC can't keep up 100% with the replay, there are very small lags which are almost unnoticeable, but add up over the period of the replay, slowing it down over time.

Just need to pop the x2 every time JP says something you haven't seen yet. =P

I don't know about that, mate. I'm running the game @ 200 FPS. So it's not a general problem with keeping up. Even if it was, one would think that the game would sync up if there somehow was a skipped beat at some place anyhow. How else would MP function?

Makes no sense to me, also, it seems a lot of the people in this thread is having the exact same problem (or have someone been experiencing the opposite problem? JP falling behind?).

My bet is still on sample rate rate conversion problems (or something similar).

love them! keep it coming!

edit:
also I have no problem with sync and I'm guaranteed not getting any slow-down due to my computer, so people who have trouble keeping sync probably need to lower their grafics settings

Just posting to say I'm really enjoying these and to tag this thread for the future.

I wish more people would do audios, it's so good for people like me on limited bandwidth.

I'm having no problem with the sync. all seems fine. I run the game at 50+ fps on low. I wouldn't think its on JP's end because all of us would experience it.

Hey JP,

I love what your doing here Your casts are balanced well between entertaining and informative, keep up the great work! I haven't seen many (or any) other casters doing a audio commentary and provide the replays alongside, I always feel on other VODs that casters will miss certain parts of the action that I desparately want to see. Its also great for checking build orders for instance, I showed that Tasteless raven/marine/tank build to a Terran friend and now im having real trouble beating him >.>

One thing I would like to ask though, would be to timestamp more often (as well as placestamp, sometimes I'm not sure where ur talking about), I think in your previous casts you timestamped only once or twice. Oh and be more excited! that SUGGY vs Akita game was great, and very tense. I really thought it was all over for SUGGY at several points in that game, but from the sound (pitch) of your voice that wasnt so clear.

Nice job JP for those audio-replays !

I was really missing those and thought that no one would ever do audio commentaries again because of youtube, etc. but you just proved me wrong =)

So congrats and keep going, they're very good !

I tried doing this before and the idea got discarded since people found it too "troublesome" to sync the audio and the replay together.

Well, I don't =P

No seriously, how hard is it ? -_-

And it's so good to move the camera all over the place as you want, noticing little details while listening to the commentator keeping a better track of the whole frame.

If you're experienced with DAW's, I recommend Reaper. It even has the name of a SC2 unit, how awesome is that?

That's exactly what I said.

It's not hard at all which is why I was disappointed with the community for saying "I just want to click play on a youtube video and sit back".

I've watched a ton of audio commentaries for games like Company of Heroes and WarCraft III, and I'm of the opinion that audio commentaries are better than video shoutcasts. I can watch whatever I want of the game, with any settings I want. Complete freedom.

The audio keeps getting out of sync, so you might want to say that you're at "mark x:xx" every so often so we can sync back up.

You're doing a good job.

PS. More Terrans replays, please.

I enjoy them and would like to see you make more, but if only a few people do, I can see why you wouldn't want to continue.

It's up to you really. If you like doing them, by all means continue. If it's a hassle and you'd rather do something else, then don't make them!

Thank you for the ones you've done so far either way!

Yeah what Shika said is what I had in mind when I was going to reply, but he summed it up perfectly. I haven't exactly watched every single one of them, but the majority and I've enjoyed every single one I've listened to so far.

I understand the "market" for these kinda things are really small in comparison to all of the YouTube VoD's but this is something else.

Hope you keep doing these as this is variety to have!

Oh and good job at MLG, top notch as usual.
