The Friday before the official release I posted a thread concerning Max Players Blizzard maps would support after release. In that thread I said:
In the beta the most we were allowed was 8 players, but in WarCraft III the max was 12. I used to play a lot of 6v6 and 4v4v4 and 3v3v3v3 games in War3, and there were a few 12 player maps in the map pool. Maps like Ice Crown (12), Garden of War (12), and A River Runs Through It (10).
Well it turns out the largest map player size in the Blizzard pool is 8, which kind of makes me sad
But then Today I noticed something.
The only custom map settings you can create have a maximum of 2 teams. This means you can only choose from 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, or FFA. What this means is that you cannot make 2v2v2v2 games on an 8 player map, or even if you design a map to support more than 8 players, you can't create 3v3v3 or 4v4v4 games.
In other words, the only game choices you have are 2 teams or FFA. Dissappointing

You can't do 2v2v2v2? Couldn't you do this in SC1? Also I'm like 95% positive I've been in custom UMS games with more than 2 teams.

I will have to try this out. If it's really maximum 2 teams, i dont know what to say, it may be a bug. Else, it is disappointing as it limits the possibilities for many custom games.

Sure, in SC1 you could do BGH 2v2v2v2 all day long. But I just checked in SC2, and it's not possible to create a game with more than 2 teams (aside from FFA).

I feel like I did a 2v1v1 in the first phase of beta... But I could be mistaken.

You can do any amount of teams. Create a custom game and you have the option of creating as many teams as you want with any setup.

in beta u could have more than 2 teams... there was an add team button, dont think they removed this

well i support not having huge retarded games like 5v5/6v6, but i want 2v2v2v2 bgh style
|
u can just choose custom and make custom teams :p
but if its ladder u talk about then im sorry, but in friendly games u can for sure play whatever u want with custom teams :D
|
i have a feeling the UMS makers can find away around this.

ok i just checked in game you can have 8 teams max in custom games ... as host you need to move players to the new team bracket to create a new team

Yay for people making false claims about b.net and everyone saying how bad it is!

Okay, I found a way to make multiple teams, but it's extremely difficult and or unlikely that you could ever get a game going with it due to the custom game interface aka popularity system. You have to:
1. Create a custom game 2. Set mode to custom where it defaults to 2 teams 3. Wait for someone to show up 4 Then drag their name to the bottom of the screen 5 The game then creates a "New Team"
I am not too sure if it limits you to a max number of teams. I could only make four teams by adding AI players and moving them. No one ever joined the game.
Edit: I also notice their in a lock alliance option. I haven't seen it yet, but I wonder if there is a way to create alliances in game. That way , if you get placed at a random start location you can ally with you neighbor after the game begins.
Also, the custom game system needs fixing. You need to be able to title your games so people know what they are getting into before they join. Something like 2v2v2v2 make alliance in game ... then set the teams to individual, but instruct people to make alliances after the game starts.

There is a way for 3+ teams; however, I don't know if it's just me, but (at least during the beta) allocating specific members/numbers to teams was extremely frustrating with the weird drag and drop/right-click system - often I would have to reset the teams back and retry to get the teams/members exactly right.
