Hi TL community,
With Blizzard giving us a final week of time off before the release of sc2 to cancel gym memberships, breakup with gf's, and pretty much say goodbye to RL things I have been going over my prep list for launch.
One item i'm stuck on though is my mouse pad or lack there of. I think somewhere amongst all my moving I lost my mouse pad and never replaced it. I'm a low level plat player and guess i feel pretty comfortable with the straight mouse to table setup but wondered what the rest of the communities recommendation, equipment, or setup is? any thoughts or recommendations to pads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks TL
See ya on b.net

Generic mouse pad will suit your needs perfectly, even if you become a progamer making 5 trillion dollars per hour. Seriously. Just find and buy the largest one you can get for under 8 bucks
Dunno if it's "high end" but I have a func 1030 pad that I've had for like 6 or 7 years now
Currently using a piece of graph paper as my mousepad. Seems ok though I've never had a good mousepad to compare with.
just buy a 30$ mousepad and get it over with. If you arn't using a QcK steel series or a pure trak talent for pc gaming your gimping yourself in my opinion (especially for fps). You need mouse room to game on the pc however on an rts where your sens can be very high its less important
I use a razer goliathus fragged speed edition. It is a soft mouse pad that is extremely grippy to your clothes and skin, but your mouse glides on it like a cloud. That allows you to be very fast and very precise at the same time.
I got a "gaming" qck steel mouse pad from a friend and you can actually tell the difference right off the bat. It's definitely a lot smoother and you're never going to have to deal with anything preventing you from what you want your mouse to do. I say, if you can, try a gaming mouse pad out and see if it works for you. Otherwise just use what you're comfortable with.
Def using the mouse pad that came in my WotLK CE box.. Hope i get a new one with SC2 CE
I don't use any mouse pad.. my table is good enough, even for playing quake. For me it's more comfortable and cleaner. I hated to wash mouse pads...
On July 24 2010 05:03 Rakgoska wrote: Def using the mouse pad that came in my WotLK CE box.. Hope i get a new one with SC2 CE That would be cool, but you won't they only giving you useless stuff
Got razer mantis mat after the razer TSL and I am super happy with it. Definitely feels smoother and no problems with it at all, the mouse sometimes jumps a bit on other mousepads/no mouse pad.
For an FPS, I can understand having a huge mouse pad cause the players tend to favor low sensitivity which requires large sweeping strokes, but I don't think I play on low enough sensitivity to warrant such a large mouse pad.
my mouse works great on my tabletop. i dont really see how a 30 pad could help...
but ive never tried one so who knows.
Unless you're playing a lot, or trying to definitely get better, i think a regular mouse pad is enough... mousepads can be somewhat expensive and there's no need to spend money unecessarily.
If that's not the case though, i think a good mousepad is important for top performance... not only prevents the mouse from skipping pixels when it can't read the surface, but it slides better, making it more effortless to move it around. Also being big helps if you have low sensibility on the mouse and want to move the mouse freely without having to lift the hand so much.
@soullogik :O mine's a 5L as well, but prettier

steelseries qck+ because my table lost color after a few years not using a mosuepad so get one good mousepads are not expensive
I use a quite large Steelseries mouse pad. I love it~
mouse pad ... never had a good one they are too small, have friction issues, get decimated by 8h/day usage I'm using the straight mouse to wood method, I don't understand what mouse pads are made for ....
Get a supermat. They're 10 bucks, great quality, incredibly durable, tons of quake pros use them and they're absolutely fucking enormous. If you don't need one that big you can just cut it up into pieces. Mouse pads are not made of magic, you shouldn't get hung up on it as your artifact or war or whatever gaming companies want you to think of your gear as.
What's better about a gaming mouse pad compared to a conventional one? I use a $5 one and it seems good enough.
I got a higher end razer mousepad (totally forgot the name of the snake it's named after) because i have a relatively high dpi mouse that seems to skip a lot on cheap-o mousepads.
But I really hate threads like this. I know a lot of people come in from FPS games where you need the highest performance most expensive everything asking what kind of mice and keyboards they need to play starcraft. All you need is a wired mouse that tracks well (you could do wireless, it's just laggy) and a keyboard that is comfortable to you. I use my laptop's keyboard, a razer salmosa, and that razer mousepad i mentioned. that's really more than enough. (The only reason i even have that salmosa is because i do play quite a few FPSes and enjoy a higher sensitivity mouse.) But you don't even need a mousepad if you're not going to invest in an expensive mouse.
EDIT: and to the question above, gaming mousepads generally have more weaves or stuff that the mouse can tell apart closer together so a high dpi mouse can track movement more precisely.

Wow I forgot I even had that, i just opened my box just know, finding everything except the DVD case in it's plastic. It has that brand new nasty smell, oh god why did I play wow for that long and buy the CE -_-.
I don't understand spending $40-100 on a mouse when you won't spend $20 on the surface you move it on. The two are so related and are equal importance in my opinion.
It's like having a race car and then never taking it a real track, just driving it around on your shitty cracked rough street roads. It can certainly be done, but do you honestly believe there won't be a benefit in the handling if you took it to an actual track?
That's where i just don't see the logic in people who are cynical about mouse pads. Yes. many of them are overpriced, but the surface you use does change how your mouse feels.
I remember a while ago someone on a different forum linked this website to a industrial plastic supplier type place where you could buy the same material they make a lot of high end mouse pads with for really cheap, in any size you wanted. I wish I remembered where it was.
I use a standard gel'ed pad. Fairly comfortable - not sure I could do with out the wrist pad. Unfortunately about 20% of my rather small mouse pad is stuffed under my keyboard due to size limitations of the keyboard tray mixed with my beefy g15 (took me awhile to find a desk with a large enough keyboard tray as is!).
If I ever end up converting to a nice pad I'd have to move my mouse onto my desk surface, which has plenty of room, but i'm not sure I'd be able to convert quickly enough when it comes to all the different variables: surface texture, mouse location (x and y axis), lack of wrist pad.
The only reason I've thought about changing is that my pad is very old and showing signs of wear. Just creased it real rough this week (can't tell when it is laying flat) and the wrist pad catches tons of skin flakes -- pretty difficult to clean and is pretty gross to do so. My buddy just purchased a razor pad this week for a low price on some bidding site and I'm going to let him give me a quick review before I switch over. Perhaps I can just get his old one, which is just a nicer version of my current.
IMO get a steelseries QcK heavy.
I use that badass DotA one they released like a year and a half ago.
artcows was giving away free mousepads don't know if the promo is still running, basically you just gotta advertise them on your fb. I made a mousepad with a picture of my dog =)

hahaha i forgot but i have that same box in my closet as well. 100% sure there is that same stupi dmouse pad in it. ill bust it out tonight
i got the razer vespula since it reminds me of the Func surfaces, and recently got a kespa mousepad which i'm using ON my vespula hehe
I use my parallel programming text book as a mouse pad, its a nice size and the cover is a decent mousing surface, plus when ever i need to look something up its right there. On the downside it is the most expensive mouse pad I will ever use since it cost over $100
I use a Razer Kabuto and it's great. I have about 4 different kinds of mousepads and it makes a noticeable difference.
I use a qck heavy, for the width mainly (I bought it for cs 1.6). It covers half my desk so there's no chance of running out of space. I use a £5 keyboard (so I could take the nonessential keys out without worrying) but a £18 mouse mat was well worth the money
I use a MX518 on a wooden varnished desk.
Plain and simple, has always worked for me.
But I must say that I would like to try out one of those Steelseries mousepads or Icemats, at least I think that's what they are called. They're basically huge glass mousepads, but they've done something to the glass to make it useable as a mousepad.

Using an old lap report. It works.
Prince of Persia 3D mouse pad.
Been using this thing since I can remember.
Just use a touchpad dammit.
I use paper. Stack 5 of them toghter tape it to my desk and bam cheap easy to replace mouse pad.
I have a $5 mousepad from Walmart. My only grief with it is that it is SMALL. Like 6x8". Not nearly big enough. I previously had an Allsop mousepad which was a fair bit larger and it worked great until I lost it during a move.
I'll probaby be buying a bigger/nicer pad as soon as I can afford it.
Steelseries QCK Mass and QCK Heavy are the two most common mousepads among gamers worldwide. (Heavy is just gigantic though, only meant if you have a ton of desk space, Mass is more reasonably sized)
Razer Sphex used with the Abyssus mouse... very good combo imo
I want a Puretrak Talent but I can't find anywhere that sells them in the UK. It's the only mouse pad that hasn't had any bad reviews that I've seen. I'd get a QcK but I've heard they start wearing out pretty fast. Can anyone confirm that?
Hey guys, I'm interested in getting a new mousepad for my "Razer Abyssus" I currently have a steelseries hard pad(no idea what the product name is i got it from someone) I really enjoy the feeling of a hard pad, but I don't like how particles gather up on the pad and it seems to get "dirty" (edit: By taht i mean full of dust and i have to brush it off constantly) fast making me have to wash it or brush off constantly(don't know if this is a problem with hard pads or not). Plus it's getting kinda old so i would be interested in a new one, If it's hard or soft doesn't matter. I read through this thread and am thinking about possibly buying the "Razer Sphex" mouse pad or the "Razer Goliathus" But before just simply buying a mousepad and possibly being unhappy with it. I thought I'd ask TL first Basically what mousepad do you recommend for someone who will mainly play sc2 and use a razer mouse?
Define 'dirty', I have a hard pad and it doesn't get dirty, aside from the usual dust. (and that stuff is on every surface, even if you can't see it..only way to get rid of it is cleaning. xD)
I'd recommend a func f-series (10.s or 30.r), they are insanely thin (1.5mm) and that makes them very comfortable to play. However the rubber base is rather aggressive and has darkened the wood of the table over the years. Not that it matters..it actually helps, because if I accidentally move my pad around it's easy to put it back on the sweet spot.
But you don't have to get a special pad for your mouse, any pad should do these days. You don't need special pads for a game either. It just depends on your personal preference. If you like a thick/thin, slow/fast, big/small pad more.
There are just to many pads on the market, I guess you won't get a final answer any time soon.
Go to newegg.com and see what people like. I've got a $5 Xtrac Pro and I like it a lot (big improvement over no pad, that's for sure). It tracks well, I like the level of friction, and the softness is also nice and comfy for my wrist to rest on. It's not large but you don't need a big pad for RTS.
I have a cloth pad, whihc can attract "dirt" a lot easier, but i just rub it all off regularly so that it stays clean, i love the higher friction and feel of the surface but if you're that ocd about the dirt then i guess i won't suggest it (QCK Mass)
Razer goliathus FTW ! thats best and the only one mouse pad i ever had ! before it i was playing on my math book :D 10eurs arent so much for any Razer product, but i tried few days ago that mouse pad similar to goliathus i think it was great too, i dont think that 10 eurs will kill you for such an amazing smooth moves of your mouse : P
Using Razer Sphex mousepad. Its only like 1mm thick, sticks to your desktop, provides awesome tracking and my mouse glides on it like on ice. Its also pretty cheap - about $15. The greatest mousepad I have used so far.
I have a Razer Destructor, it doesn't move whatsoever during play, it's got high glide, but it feels very controlled as well. It also has a case for transport. Great stuff.
I have the Steelseries Kerrigan v Zeratul mousepad as well as the Razer Goliathus. Only 15 dollars, amazing pads.
No reason to get a generic 5$ mousemat when the Steelseries QcK mini is so cheap.
use ALLSOP - its cheap, and its reeeally really good, I use one for 5 years now, and it still feels good even though I'd like to buy a new one
I got one from razer for like 15$ never going back,
1995 Marvin the Martian mouse pad with matching tape dispenser. FTW.
On October 26 2010 03:07 Red_Storm wrote: No reason to get a generic 5$ mousemat when the Steelseries QcK mini is so cheap.
Agreed. I just bought one of these since my desk space is fairly limited (I'm in college and everything is in my room in my apartment, so I have my TV on my long desk, too, so my computer stuff only gets half) and I'm a pretty big fan of it so far. I mean, for $7 you can get such a high quality product that this should be considered the generic standard.
Im using the wemadefox mouse pad back from when TL had the wemadefox shirt sale. Its wonderful and I absolutely have no clue what I will do when it finally deteriorates beyond usability.
I have the Starcraft 2 edition of the QcK (medium size - which is still massive). The Kerrigan vs Zeratul one. It's pretty boss.

i'm using a 4 dollar mouse pad i got at the campus computer store. not much space for a huge mouse pad in my dorm room table. i am thinking about cutting my puretrak talent and using that but a hardmat is much smoother than the puretrak talent anyways.
I got a rocketfish pad and its awesome.

No, a generic mouse pad does not suit my needs. I tend to get wrist pains on any mousepad that is not as thin as possible. Since I also dislike the feeling of a wrist rest, it's either plain table or a thin gamer mousepad for me. Plain table does not make the mouse glide as easily though, and will wear down mouse feet faster.
I did not vote in the poll though, because while I *do* use a gamer mousepad, it is just a 14 bucks Razer Sphex (thinnest I could find) and not one of their horribly expensive high-end ones.

Played with logitech g5 + steelseries qck+ ( soft mat). Now playing with steelseries kinzu + steelseries 4hd ( hard mat). It's really, really good. I prefer hard mat and "small" mouses : )
Steelseries qck $10 Using table after getting it feels really crappy :p
Steel Series QCK Heavy user here. The pad is like, a quarter-inch thick and smooth as hell :D
I've had this pad for about two years now and I love it. No issues at all with the durability or build quality. Very soft; the thickness helps especially if your desk has some nicks or warping from older wood or anything like that.
Also it's biiiig; like bigger than 1 foot by 1 foot big >:O
I use a 13 year old Pokemon Mouse pad
Strange as it sounds, I use the arm of my chair as a mouse pad.
Steelseries qck all the way.
Steelseries S&S. Just as with a mouse. Once you get a good mouse(pad), you'll never want to do with a cheap one again. I used the wooden surface, piece of paper, cheap small mousepads and a homemade one (wrapping fabric over a piece of plastic), but the 'high end gaming mousepad' is much better. I am primarily an FPS player, which may matter.
steelseries qxc+ possibly the biggest mouse pad ever, but i love it

I posted this in an earlier nearly identical thread, but I'll post it again because it really is incredible. I've always preferred a soft surface mousepad and since I never have money to pay for anything new I've been using my Diablo II Ultimate Strategy Guide as a mousepad for a long time. At this point the place where I rest my wrist is worn away through about 10 pages, but I find that the mouse moves really well across it.

I was the pleasure of playing with that QcK in my first lan of SC2 in Portugal and the only thing i can say is that mousepad is great and really smooth.
I have a basic pad with a gel wrist supporter. If I go w/o a wrist supporter my wrist pivot bone can hurt.
EDIT: that diablo 2 book is the most amazing yet disgusting thing I've ever heard of.
I use the Steelseries qck+. I would pick it over your average mousepad. It's large, really smooth, looks good, doesn't move about the table, portable, durable and it cost me 15 euro including delivery. I've had it for 2 years and I find that it goes great with my mx518 which i also would recommend.

Mouse Pads for the most part are just as important if not more important than the mouse itself. Most people will not realize this for themselves until they test out the difference between a shit mouse pad and a real gaming one.
I was using the WoW BC mousepad for the longest time, but picked up a Razer Golaithus Control edition that came for free with a new Razer mouse.
Its tempting to get the Kerrigan/Zeratul SC2 Steelseries mousepad for the awesomefactor, but then again, I'll be getting the WoW Cata mousepad in a month and a half so it might be mousepad overload
razer vespula FTW
i really really like it
bigger than "regular" mousepads but also smaller than those huge ass counter strike ones. my desk isn't big enough to fit it without messing everything up.
i also like the wrist rest. i know most of you guys hate it. but hey.. its removable so lol.. we both can enjoy it.
=]

old lab report. works fine
I recommend the steelseries qck mini. Its large enough for sc2 (probably not FPS) and casual use of the computer.
I use an mx518 mouse with it.
the qck mini is a great budget choice for a mousepad.
I use a func 1030, pretty happy about it.
Believe or not my current mouse pad is "The Art of Starcraft II Wings of Liberty" from the collector's edition
I've never had a problem with or wanted to try out anything but cheap mouse pads.
theres no such thing as a "gamer" mouse pad
any comfortable pad with a large surface area works the same
For anyone using taped paper or game manuals, you can pick up a QcK mini for $6.99 at probably any computer hardware store.

no, that's wrong.

I have no idea where it came from, but I have this sheet of black plastic that I use as a mouse pad. It is fairly hard, very slight bumpy texture, and has a slight sheen to it, but isn't very shiny/reflective. It works great! The hard surface is great for fast motion and is easy to keep clean, while the slight amount of texture keeps it from being slippery.
*edit: should probably mention I use an optical (not laser) mouse.. Logitech MX518.

Canada Computer $12 steelseries what mroe can u ask for?
Anyone uses OCZ behemoth? I just got it a few days ago and have to say it increases my game a lot.
A big issue with mice is that they get dirty if you just put them on the table. Greases and such reduce mice DPI in a few hours of play time. a good mouse pad (make sure you get an washable one) can actually keep your mice clean and DPI up.
I use the Steelseries QCK+ along with my Razer Death Adder. I love how big the surface area is, and it thickness helps make uneven surfaces smooth.
i got this nice sc2 mouse pad with kerrigan and zeratul fighting on it from my girlfriend to our 6 month anniversary ^___

Since I am A razer Fanboy, i have the megasoma. Its good for a soft mouse pad, but i would prefer a harder mouse pad for my mouse which was made for a hard mouse pad

Roccat Sota, bought it for 5$ instead of 20, it's just amazing ! I had a cheap 5$(real) and the desk himslef, but it's the day and the night !
Starcraft 2 pre-order mousepad. This thing actually sucks total ass >.<
I use a piece of white paper with a paperweight in the corner, it works amazing
I used to be a cheapass mousemat user but then I bought the Razer eXactMat, I'm never looking back again. I wish I had bought this kind of mousemat earlier for other Blizzard games. It also won't wear out like other crappy plastic/cloth mouse mats.
I use a steelseries Qck + steelseries XAI mouse. Just perfect !
Hey guys, thanks for all the tips here. I think i am going to go for a razer sphinx or goliathus if i find them in my local shop, otherwise i'll just include them in my package next time I order something(damn delivery costs) Now for a slightly related question, I noticed some small scratches underneath my new mouse that i have had about 2 or so weeks, i checked my old mouse and it also had some scratches, (very light scratches) Is this anything to worry about? will those minor scratches on the "mouse feet" alter how the mouse "flows"? is this normal wear and tear or should I be more vigilant about cleaning my hard pad before starting to game for a couple hours?
Just bought the steelseries 9hd, from what i read it should be awesome. Well let you guys know how it is once i get it.
i have a roccat taito but i would just use a 5€ thing if i needed a new mouse pad
MX518 on a QcK Heavy, couldn't be more happy with it. Replace the mouse feet every 1.5 to 2 years and I'm in heaven.
I own a SteelSeries S&S, 4S and QcK.
S&S in my opinion the best i've ever had and wouldn't change it for anything, period. 4S gets a bit sticky with your mouse surfaces (those 4 things at the bottom) and furthermore was way to cold for my hands QcK got that one for free or low prices at some of my SteelSeries order.. can't really remember. Anyways it's rather handy for mobile devices like laptops, easy to take with you but i'd prefer my S&S over the QcK allot.

i've had quite a few mousepads over the years,
everglide (old original plastic one): decent mousepad overall but it wears out pretty fast, and it wears out your mouse feet icemat (glas): great mousepad very fast speed, is a little cold and can get very anoying when you have a bit of dirt or w/e onder your mousefeet, lasts a lifetime too Corepad Magna(glas): great mousepad, overall quite comparable with the icemat, just a little less anoying with the dirt alsop mousepad(original cloth) decent mousepad, a little small for my liking, its also quite prone to move around on your desk. razer goliathus (cloth, speed edition): my current mousepad, has a great feeling and nice mousepeed, so far i'm liking it a lot, cant quite comment on the lifetime since i only had it for a couple of weeks (seems fine though)

not really, i'f your comfortable with the speed / traction of your mouse / mouspad combination then it really doesn't matter. However if your not quite sure yet, or are still experimenting searching which pad (glas, cloth, plastic) suit's you best, these gaming mousepads are quite a nice option. They also generally last a bit longer

Using the Razer Mantis Control mousepad and I love it. I'm using it for more than 2 years now and it's still in perfect conditioning.
I have an Icemat and Hyperglides - No friction :D

Puretrak Talent with my IME 3.0, jury is still out on a better mouse for SC2, stuck on playing in low-res for now.

The Razer Destructor is wonderful!! Paired with my DeathAdder's Teflon feet, it's a smooth as silk ride all night long, baby!
I just bought the Razor Goliathus Control oversized mouse pad. And now my wireless logitech mouse seems to work worse It skips on the screen and I have problems clicking on stuff, especially if I hold the mouse lightly. If I push it down a bit I can get more control. For a mouse pad called Control it is pretty disappointing.
Just a little warning to all. I just found out cloth mouse pads like the above Razer Goliathus have problems with lasers mice. Also the higher the DPI of those mice more problems.
They say these pads have no problems with optical mice.
QcK+ for me - Although it doesn't fit on my desk 100% it is just SO comfortable to not have to worry where you put your mousepad in relation to your hand. You just put it there and place your mouse at any location you feel comfortable. Also I don't like the feeling of a "transition" from mousead to table on my forearm. I hate mousepads that don't reach to the edge of my table, so that one part of my arm rests on the mousepad and the other one rests on the table.
Previously had a hard plastic one and I definitely prefer the cloth, much more comfortable for longer sessions.

I hate mousepads that don't reach to the edge of my table, so that one part of my arm rests on the mousepad and the other one rests on the table.
Previously had a hard plastic one and I definitely prefer the cloth, much more comfortable for longer sessions. Which mouse do you use with your cloth pad?

Alright guys i settled on a "Steelseries 4hd" plastic mouse pad i found in gamestop, pretty reasonable price around 20 dollars. My previous mousepad was a glass mousepad so no wonder it was attracting dust en masse, it also liked scratching up my mouse, so i will definitely not buy a glass mousepad in the nearby future the(may just be that it started getting old I don't really know if they attract more dust as they get older)
enough about that, the steelseries 4hd is a good priced mousepad and I recommend it. (currently using it with a razer abyssus)

Using a SteelSeries QcK. It's softer than my generic mousepad, and the rubber at the bottom actually prevents it from sliding. Ten dollars well spent.

I play with the standard-nerd-equipment, mx518
In my defense, I bought this mouse immediately after release (still the original 1600 DPI), has been working flawlessly and I don't feel the need to change.
