But I really hate threads like this. I know a lot of people come in from FPS games where you need the highest performance most expensive everything asking what kind of mice and keyboards they need to play starcraft. All you need is a wired mouse that tracks well (you could do wireless, it's just laggy) and a keyboard that is comfortable to you. I use my laptop's keyboard, a razer salmosa, and that razer mousepad i mentioned. that's really more than enough. (The only reason i even have that salmosa is because i do play quite a few FPSes and enjoy a higher sensitivity mouse.) But you don't even need a mousepad if you're not going to invest in an expensive mouse. EDIT: and to the question above, gaming mousepads generally have more weaves or stuff that the mouse can tell apart closer together so a high dpi mouse can track movement more precisely.

It's like having a race car and then never taking it a real track, just driving it around on your shitty cracked rough street roads. It can certainly be done, but do you honestly believe there won't be a benefit in the handling if you took it to an actual track? That's where i just don't see the logic in people who are cynical about mouse pads. Yes. many of them are overpriced, but the surface you use does change how your mouse feels. I remember a while ago someone on a different forum linked this website to a industrial plastic supplier type place where you could buy the same material they make a lot of high end mouse pads with for really cheap, in any size you wanted. I wish I remembered where it was.

If I ever end up converting to a nice pad I'd have to move my mouse onto my desk surface, which has plenty of room, but i'm not sure I'd be able to convert quickly enough when it comes to all the different variables: surface texture, mouse location (x and y axis), lack of wrist pad. The only reason I've thought about changing is that my pad is very old and showing signs of wear. Just creased it real rough this week (can't tell when it is laying flat) and the wrist pad catches tons of skin flakes -- pretty difficult to clean and is pretty gross to do so. My buddy just purchased a razor pad this week for a low price on some bidding site and I'm going to let him give me a quick review before I switch over. Perhaps I can just get his old one, which is just a nicer version of my current.

it's not a "high-end" mouse pad, but it's definitely a gamer pad, and it's more expensive than a generic $5 pad.

Plain and simple, has always worked for me. But I must say that I would like to try out one of those Steelseries mousepads or Icemats, at least I think that's what they are called. They're basically huge glass mousepads, but they've done something to the glass to make it useable as a mousepad.

I wasn't into the BW competitive scene at all and played mainly WoW and CS 1.6 before so this felt like the right direction at the time.
